Apexi Active Tail Silencer - Works!
 

Hello all,
I recently purchased a Type 1R Titanium Catback from a forum member for a decent price and combined it with the ACE-250 header and stock front pipe. I was hoping the stock front pipe would make it bearable in terms of noise, although the ACE headers are notorious for being quite loud when combined with any catback other than heavy catbacks like stock or something like an Invidia Q300. Noise levels are ok for the most part, however there was a bad low frequency resonance when under load between 2-3000RPM.


I then purchased an Apexi 90mm active tail silencer with a 100mm adapter to match the Type 1R exhaust tip. The silencer has a spring loaded valve that opens up when exhaust pressure reaches a threshold, so it is nice and quiet at low rpm, but wakes up at high RPM and is supposed to have minimal, if any hp loss. I would expect that it would not make a difference on my NA car.


I am happy to report that this has worked! The cold startup no longer sounds like a high powered subwoofer and the 2-3000RPM drone is gone, gone, gone! I am happy because if this couldn't be fixed then the stock catback was going back in. Can be removed by undoing one bolt for track days.

Any idea how much the silencer weighs? I saw a shipping weight of 10lbs, which seems high.

This thread dates back to May, but as an aside the newer tunes from Delicious Tuning (I’m sure you’re using Delicious Tuning if you’re running the ACE header) are much quieter on cold start, along with offering a number of other benefits.

Awesome. I've been thinking about combining one of these with an HKS single exit. Still don't know how to make it fit the HKS 97mm tip, or if the tip is actually 97mm.

I just installed the 115mm one on my Tomei 80r. There is a little bit of a gap. So I’m going to high temp rtv to seal it. I think the gab is too small for the adapter to fit. Other than that I like the sound better than the Tomei silencer.
