New 86 Exhaust Questions
 

I might pick up an 86 and I have a few questions...

First of all, can I do the sound tube delete without any repercussions?
(I'll be looking at that more in the next few days)

Also, if I get a cat delete will I have to get my car tuned so it won't throw codes?

Will shops do that legally in CA?

You can delete the sound tube no problem for about 2 bucks and 10 minutes of work.

The cat, I wouldn't risk myself in Nazifornia. But, yes, you should do a tune when you install a catless header.

Doesn't matter. I think it's a federal offense to tamper with a correctly-functioning emissions system. Shops would be risking tremendous fines if they did that for you.

2.) No, no tune required if you're just removing the secondary cat in the front pipe with a catless FP.

But what about the O2 sensors tho? Won't they throw codes?

No. There's only two, in front of and behind the primary cat which is on the exhaust manifold.

I drove my FRS on the wild side in SoCal. Tomei EL header, overpipe, Ti front pipe, and 60r exhaust. Best part is its lighter than half the weight of the factory setup and other drivers notice you in their blind spots. Loud and obnoxious but I'll have it no other way lol.

I don't know many shops that will delete your cats. If your willing to get your hands dirty and have a set of metric tools... you can do it by yourself in your garage.

Is this a bolt-on job? If so EZ PZ

I can't weld though.

Most aftermarket exhaust systems are plug and play... so yes bolt on. No welding required unless you buy a cheapo universal setup.

can i run those downstream pipes without the header and still be good without a tune? no blowback? pops are fine i just dont want my engine to flex O.O

As far as the sound tube, it's easier just to "stick a cork" in the outlet, which comes through the firewall in the right side footwell.

Yes but you you still have the sound tube in the engine bay.

It took me a 15 minute trip to the hardware store to get a plug and a clamp, and then 10 minutes to open a beer, and do the job. Worth it if the mod bug is biting.
