widest and narrowest summer tires
 

So i got some rota titans 17x8 +45 and used the stock tires...wow, they look stretched!! Its stock suspension and settings so it really looks funny. Anyone know which stock size tires are actually wider than advertised? Or, which 245/40/17's run more narrow than usual? This is my daily so no race tires, but I'd like to at least get the tire to match the 8inch width without looking stretched.

go 225 wide

Bridgestone S-04 ran wide from what I compared them to. A 225 would be good on there

Go to tirerack and click on the specs tab of a tire, it shows the actual width. Any decent 225/45 is going to fit on there just fine and not be stretched.

245/40 Michelin pilot super sports run really narrow. Slight stretch on my 17x9 wheels. People say they fit more like a 225...

I thought about the 225/45 but the overall diam is more like half an inch more. My car isnt dropped so it might look like a lift than anything else :(

225/45 is completely fine. 0.4" taller overall means 0.2" difference from hub to ground.

every single tire manufacturer will list all the specs you need, including actual tire width on their website.

I have ran both 225/45 and 245/40 Michelin tires. The difference in height is subtle. I wouldn't worry about it. Also, IcyBrzzz is correct. The 245/40 MPSS is narrower than some 245's. I went from a 245/40/17 MPSS to a 245/35/18 MPSS, the 18's tread width is half inch wider.

Personally I would try to avoid putting a 245 on an 8" rim, even though it has been done. Having the wheel slightly wider gives the tire casing better support.

Seriously, get yourself a good 225/45. The set will be like $100 cheaper than 245s and fit better on the wheels.

well, I've been eyeing the new Firehawk Indy 500 and theyre pretty inexpensive...in a 225/45. I'll probably get them when my OEM tires get worn down some more.

sorry if this has been answered before, but would a 225/45 tire effect gearing since it is a taller tire? when you compare 245/40 to the stock tire its almost the same dimensions. just trying to get a better understanding. thanks

Technically, yes the gearing is taller. BUT, in reality, I think you would have a hard time feeling it, and from what I've read here, not many others mind the 225/45 height difference.
Yes the 245/40 should match the overall diameter of the stock 215/45, but the extra width would be up to you whether you want that or not.

The stocks look silly small on a 8inch wheel, and a 235 would be the right width but the diameter would be either way too big or too small depending if 45 or 40. :/ I'll be happy with a squared off profile instead of a stretched look...hence the looking for a super skinny 245/40 but the smallest i found had tread width of 8.5inches...so looks like 225/45 it is.
