Interior rearview mirror rattling/moving with subwoofer
 

Hello all,

Not a recall or TSB, but certainly annoying.

I just installed a 10" subwoofer and amp combo in my car last week, as I felt the OEM system was missing that low-end punch, and I'm a bass guy through and through, so I wanted to remedy that. First time I've had an aftermarket sub in one of my cars since '09, so I was really looking forward to it.

However, something annoying has popped up.

When the bass hits at a certain frequency, it rattles the FUCK out of the interior rearview mirror, to the point where the mirror moves out of position. To the point where I'll look at the mirror and realize I'm looking at the ceiling of my car. It makes a loud "buzzing" sound when it moves, as if it's loose on the "rod" that holds it to the windshield or something.

This means I either A) have to keep the bass levels lower than I want to, therefore not getting the punch I desire, or B) have to keep adjusting the mirror every 30 seconds to put it back to where it was so I can actually see behind me.

Now keep in mind I don't have the bass turned up to ridiculous, EXTREME levels, at least not in my opinion (this is subjective of course). But it's really annoying me; the moving AND the rattling/buzzing sound it makes when doing so.

Is there a way I can secure it better or do something to stop it from moving?

Anyone on here with aftermarket audio have the same problem? If so, have you developed a jimmy-rig or some kind of solution to stop this from happening? It's driving me nuts.

You might try tightening up the mirror ......;)

Maybe use a little Loctite ..??

I was trying to think of a way to tighten it and I'm not even sure how I would go about that.

I could take the mirror off the glass, but I don't know if the mirror itself easily comes off of the stick it's mounted to.

And if I put Loctite on there, wouldn't it be pretty much locked in place for good?

I'm usually a pretty creative guy that can figure out stuff like this myself, but this one has me stumped.

there are different colors of loctite with different strengths.... Uh, there it is..

Removable & serviceable in every color

Reinforce the glass.

Just replace the mirror. It has too much movement.

Funny you say that, as I had a wide-angle mirror clipped on to my OEM mirror. Had to take it off once I got the sub in, because the extra weight on the mirror would cause it to move down immediately after every bass hit. Then it simply fell off because of the vibrations.

Now with that mirror removed, the OEM mirror moves UP when it vibrates (so that I'm looking at the ceiling).

My BRZ rearview has had a stripped screw since I bought it.
Tried locktite, didnt hold.
Used JB weld and it DID work until I had to have the windshield replaced and the tech removed the screw that had been glued in.
Now it wobbles again and I havent gotten around to using the JB weld again.

haha bolt in on in mid and two sides. Maybe then it wont move? haha

I have a 10" sub in my trunk as well. I see vibrations in my OEM mirror but it NEVER physically adjusts itself or falls, no matter how loud I have Drake turned up :happyanim:

It sounds like your mirror screw is loose (or if tightening doesn't solve the problem... stripped). I suggest buying a new aftermarket borderless mirror with homelink controls online - there's a few on different sites that I have my eye on.

On another note I'm sure you hear all the other ridiculous rattles this car makes with a sub too - mine makes this awful noise somewhere in the backseat, I think it's the 3rd brake light against the window. The door mirror controls in either door also rattle at the right frequencies.

Yeah the rear tray where the 3rd brake light is rattles like a bitch too, but that's more of a minor annoyance compared to the mirror.

The weaker versions of thread lock become "rubbery" compared to the stronger versions. You will be able to adjust your mirror, it will just be stiffer.
Start with one or two drops around the ball joint. It won't become brittle like superglue.

I wrapped mine to fix the rattle...
