Engine tapping sound

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqgbFiToVoE"]Frs tapping sound - YouTube[/ame]

62k mile, no mods completely bone stock. The tapping sound is noticeable at 2000 rpm at the 0.20 mark. Side note the tapping occurs after warm up and noticeable when rpm comes up or down to 2000-3500 rpm. The tap is lightly noticeable during 4300-7000 rpm. I know it's hard to diagnose by video i would like to know what's your opinion on it. Ty

Sounds like a bad lifter. :(

Yep, either a lifter with too much space or something else in the valve train.

Do you track your car .. ??

How long has it been making that sound .. ??

Back-in-the-day ..... with a 9/16" wrench, a screwdriver and a feeler gauge, we could have quieted that puppy down ......:sigh:

NOW. look at this mess .......and that's just half of it ...... :help:

The car is my daily driver never been track. Once in awhile I would go through the gears but never been in a race or track. Forgot to mention the car is a 6 speed automatic

The sound been like that for months.

How bad is this lifter problem? Should I continue to drive or take it to see a mechanic asap?

IF it is a lifter clearance problem, it's a pain to adjust the valve clearances. The cam bridges must be taken off to adjust the clearances which, MAY necessitate pulling the engine.

What I would do is get me a long screwdriver and place it around the engine compartment (with the soft end up to your ear) and see if you can isolate where the sound is coming from.

Then, I would take it into a dealer for an evaluation by their techs. Also, ask them if any necessary repair would be covered under warranty (it looks like you are close on that).

As far as driving it making that tapping sound, IF IT IS AN OUT OF TOLERANCE LIFTER, it shouldn't hurt the car ...... it's just not opening that one valve as far as it should be opened.

Keep us posted.

Hopefully others will be along with some more insight.

It was a different engine but that video sounds exactly like a wrist pin failure I had. That engine died a horrible death soon afterward.

So hard to tell but on a second listen, it's disconcerting to hear it come and go at different speeds. Sloppy valves don't do that. They tap all the time. :(

Didn't someone on here have a bad vacuum pump that made a sound like the lifters? But I remember it being louder than the sound I am hearing in the video.

If you do find the cause, please post back!!

Those have a bright/harsh intermittent knock but yes, I remember someone posted a good recording of it.

@HondaCBR08RR .... now, that would be easier to check, as opposed to tearing the engine apart.

Maybe put your screwdriver and ear back that way and give a listen .. ??

Or you can pull the cushions out of the couch and root around under all the car seats to scrape together $4 for an actual mechanic's stethoscope, which has a better, longer probe and better earpieces than a screwdriver.

That's an absolutely terrible idea.

Yeah, or you could snag a staple or a nail digging around in your couch.
