2017 BRZ 6th feels stiff
Just got my brand new 2017 BRZ and I was just working on getting used to the gears and where they are so I had the car off and the clutch pressed down and I started going from 1st to 6th and I noticed when I got to 6th, putting it into 6th felt a little stiff and clunky, is that normal?

new car, give it a few hunder/ thousand miles to break in. it could also very well be that the engine isnt on.

+1 for engine being off

Pretty standard symptoms. It's easy to forget that most cars these days don't have a direct mechanical linkage to the transmission like ours do which is what makes shifting feel so snappy and crisp.
Once it's broken in and when all the fluid are up to tempt, it's probably one of the best feeling transmissions out there. Sure some of the older versions (mine included) have some synchro issues particularly 4th to 5th, but I believe the revised transmissions in the MY2017 they've really beefed up the internals so hopefully you won't run into any of that later on. While you're at it, if you subscribe to the "change engine oil at 1k mile" break-in theory, you should swap out the M/T fluid as well. Motul seems to be a forum favorite and it should make shifting buttery smooth. I just wish I had done the same much earlier on as it could've saved me some headaches down the road. |
The car never became alive until 3000 miles. It felt tight and weird. The factory breakin oil in the car was also making it rev super slow.

yup, like @Manic said swap the trans/diff fluid soonish-maybe between 3 and 5k miles?
Just don't wait until the "recommended" mileage lol |
Start the engine.
Let it idle and warm up in neutral. As soon as the RPM drops to around or below 1000 RPM you're good to go. Shifts are way smoother compared to just starting the car and taking off immediately. |
No need to change the trans/diff fluids. The car is just in the break-in period and everything will smooth out gradually. Consult your dealer for the fluid change intervals.

For crying out loud guys did only a couple of you read the whole post? The freakin' car was off. "Wait and let it break in" and "change the oil right away"? Really?
The gear are meant to be shifted when the syncros are spinning. ^h gear is meant to be spinning the fastest. Sitting in the shut off car making vroooom noises and shifting gears is not driving. Why do so many want to "fix" things that are not broke all the time? |
I was doing lately an installation and had to switch the gear on 6th while the engine was off. I didn't notice any stiffness. In general the gear box in this car needs its time and I wouldn't worry too much.
|
My 6th gear has always felt a little longer, notchier, and slower to get into. No problems getting into it though, I just don't throw it in hard since its just a cruising gear.
|
The gears like to be spinning when asked to engage one another.

My two cents; I like how my tranny feels better with 52,000 miles on it than it did with 52 miles on it.
