Ignition Coil A CEL
Hey guys, just wondering if this sounds a little weird to you. I got a CEL while doing a second gear pull to around 7k rpm for Ignition Coil A which i read at an O'Reileys. Took it straight to the dealer to be safe since it is under warranty and after 10 mins, they called me up and said that they just cleared the code by erasing memory from the ECU. The car wasn't misfiring when i got the code so i'm not worried about anything breaking, especially since it would be their issue not mine.
Another interesting part to the story is that when i got in my car, the accelerator pedal was not as sensitive as before. It honestly needs to be pressed down about a fifth of the way down to start working. I talked to the mechanic and he said that it probably is because the ECU needs to relearn my driving habits and that it would take a few cycles to get back to normal. It isn't the biggest issue in the world but i am just wondering if anyone else has seen this before. Car has 45k miles. |

The Tech is correct and the ECU will need to relearn. Happens anytime it is flashed or the power shut right down. |
The kicker of it is that the tech guy was like "it's not meant for that kind of stuff". I was like the original commercial for the FR-S shows it redlining no problem lol

My take is, why run it up to the rev limiter ...... that is past the peak HP and torque point. Also, when the engine is shut down for a moment, it takes it a bit to come back up. humfrz |

Do you have an aftermarket header? Likely you're cooking the coil pack. Pretty common for UEL setups. Coil packs arnt too expensive.

Here's a thread on it. There's no real fix other than to clear the code, see if it happens again, then replace the coil. People who track a lot will sometimes bring spare coils with them, so it doesn't ruin their weekend.

^ that, it's one of the car's weak points. If your car is just a daily driver it will likely be the only one you ever replace, or atleast it should last a good while.
The slow pedal sounds normal if they undid the battery and let the ecu reset. Just clearing the code doesn't do that. |
Update: CEL came on again for the same thing. Just going to show up at Toyota and demand they actually do some work instead of just taking the easy way out.

There is at least one revised part number for the coil packs. I've killed several on my car over the 100K miles I've had it. The most common one to fail is the passenger front (cyl 1), then passenger rear (cyl 3). I've also had driver's front (cyl 2) fail.
In my experience once a coil pack starts to fail and throw codes it will continue to do so and in increasing rate until it is replaced. |
Yeah I'm going to push them to replace it this time so they don't have to see my ugly mug in there anymore. And so I don't have to see theirs.

Didn't have time to go to the dealership this weekend but the code cleared itself.
