Oil change and filter question
 

I'm sorry, I may be panicking a little bit, and this might be in here somewhere, but I just changed my oil myself for the first time after getting the car, and I replaced the OEM oil filter with a Greddy oil filter and noticed that there is a hole outside of the sealing area. Is this just a drain hole? Or is this supposed to be covered? Thanks so much...

It's just the drain hole.

Some filters cover it up more.

Why not using an OEM oil filter?

To be super tuner jdm man! Na, but seriously no particular reason, to be different I suppose, plus got my magnetic drain plug from the same person so this is what they had and I just went with it, see how it does..

Use OEM subaru Filter. cause racecar man. Its just there no pressure or any oil should be in it. I clean mine after ever change that way if there is a seal leak ill know it was clean before hand. even with OEM filter from suba the crevice is still visible.

I don't think it's even a drain hole. I don't know what it's for but it's just a divot. Maybe it started out in the design as a drain hole but after the dies were made they decided it wasn't necessary? :iono:

I dont think its a drain hole either because if i remember correctly the seal part is actually raised and if it did drain the oil pressure would cause oil to spew out of it. I think its just there as a place to hold the majority of the oil so it doesnt run circles. Or maybe it is there so it all collects in one place so you can clean it up easier during changes. IDK im rlly just talking out my butt at this point.

It's there so I have to clean it with a q-tip every time I change the oil. -___-

Wrong filter bro. Oem brz filter is designed for this car the one you have is for Impreza/older WRX

I always wanna ask.... How different is a normal filter compare to a errr..."high performance"filter? >_>

Oh my, @pooch ..... @Ultramaroon and @tofurun are correct, it is NOT a drain hole.

My bad ...... :sigh:

However, I suspect it is a "vestigial" drain hole ...... :D

I always get my filter from a dealer and they always ask for the vin #. Last time it was explained to me that the filter changed a few times and there are differences based on production dates. The woman behind the counter even showed me three different ones and while they looked essentially the same there were noticeable differences in diameter that I wouldn't have realized without them being side by side. Another thing that I realized was the older ones are packaged with a new crush washer and the newer ones aren't.
