Help :( tranny issues

I started noticing a grinding noise between 2500-4000 rpm while decelerating (engine braking) in 5th gear. Push in the clutch it goes away, go below 2500 rpm it goes away. It is also faint when in 4th gear. No grinding when I am shifting, and no other new noises.

It started after I had a kartboy short shifter/rear bushing and a ACT 6 puck (with springs) clutch installed both in the same job.

I don't think it's synchros cause it isn't happening when I shift between the gears.. Flywheel is stock so its not from a lightened flywheel. It's not a normal whur sound or a rattle... Maybe its worn down gears but I mean that doesn't make sense since I only put on 3000 miles on it when I bought it used with 7000 miles on the odometer..

Looking through the forums most people are saying if its grinding its probably the synchros or a throw out bearing or an input shaft bearing.

Anyone have a similar sound from their tranny? Its just confusing to me since I haven't experienced something like this thats RPM specific.

Thanks in advance.

Worst case scenario I go back to stock and see if warranty will replace my tranny.

Maybe it's just the sound of my new clutch and something I need to get used to? I'll post sound clips tomorrow though

Sound clip. This is in 5th gear accelerating to 3000 rpm and then releasing gas, it ends at 2000 rpm.

Also, it is not the shift knob rattle.. that's a different sound that I am used to haha

Well here's the thing that is unique about fifth gear. It is the only gear in which the transmission doesn't do anything. The input shaft that sticks into the clutch disc is connected straight to the output shaft which sticks into the drive shaft.

I'll put money on something rattling in the clutch.

That's a really good recording, BTW.

Didn't know that thanks so much! Guess it's just a sound I'll have to get used to.

What fluid are you running? I would swap to Motul, it is seriously amazing. I have now run Amsoil, Motul, and the stuff im on now Neo Synthetic. Neo Synthetic takes the cake, however Motul is above Amsoil in feel. It really makes your transmission a different beast just from the gear oil you pick.

Currently running redline. If anyone is reading this and just got their 86 I highly recommend you change your granny fluid.. I had it for 2 months when the clutch blew out and it's a certified preowned that the dealer claimed had a x whatever point inspection and fluid check... BS. Tranny fluid was black as ever
