To finally beat those muscle cars in straigh line...
... the twins need a CVT.

I know nothing of modern cv transmissions but I thought one of the main disadvantages of CVs were they were quite inefficient. That is, there was a lot of frictional loss.

My wife has one on her Juke Nismo RS. it is really off on the fake gear changes. Mid throttle response is super slow. Seems OK when you floor it in sport mode though.
|
My buddy has one on his Grizzly. Thing was pretty sweet at accelerating. Not my cup of tea though.

Hello everyone, and welcome!

CVT's are really cool, and work great depending on their application. I have been really impressed with them in snowmobiles through the years. I think the big problem with them is getting them to behave nicely, and informing the consumer about what they are doing.
The fake shift point thing needs to come to an end, and consumers need to understand that their car is putting more power to the ground and consuming less fuel because it's behaving differently than a transmission they are used to. If manufactures can convince people to stop being so stupid, CVT's can kill it. |
My Impreza has the "drooling idiot" of CVTs. Highway merges are needlessly exciting (not in a good way) and it takes a good half second to actually get in gear after you select the gear (much slower than a conventional 4 speed slushbox)

I hate them. My wife has a 2014 Accord and the rev hang drone you get when trying to get to highway speeds is so annoying.

i had a versa sl hatchback with cvt and it was great

I didn't like the CVT in Corolla and Rogue. But I actually don't mind the CVT in WRX and Forester XT. I don't know if Subaru's lineartronic cvt is that much better or if FA20DIT + CVT just match better, but I actually liked it. I wouldn't want it in a driver's car, but I like it in a car like Forester XT.

Someone needs to make a quick econobox with a CVT to show how it can really make a difference in terms of performance. That means uncompromising drone and a boring ride and convincing the media to track test a V6 CVT Camry or whatever against the likes of the sub $30k 'sports cars', the big thing will be the noise, they should shoot for electric car like quietness, drop all the bullshit with the fake shifts and tell people to deal with it.
Toyota has the clout to do it, but I don't know if they know how from a bean counter marketing perspective. Nissan has the bean counter/marketers approving the Maxima as the fastest beige-mobile for about 20 years, but I don't know if they're strong enough technically to make a good car around it at a reasonable price point. |
Lol that dude and his vids make me laugh. He also needs to eat some more meat and taters.
But meh. CVT On paper it's seems logical. Real world, nope. Then again a tranny is only as good as the power plant feeding it. |
I owned an automatic CVT Nissan Juke for a few years. By far the smoothest, nicest, cleanest transmission I have ever owned. CVT for the Win. Also had them on 2 Honda Ruckus I owned. Theyre fun to tinker with.... Any way. KDD is the future lol

I had an early release Crosstrek and hated it. Sluggish and boring mostly due to the tranny. If it had better seats and was quieter I might have been able to put up with it for longer but... that tranny BLAH.
