Which is the best BMW ever, M1 vs. E30 M3?

I haven't driven either the M1 or E30 M3, but personally I have a soft spot for the E36 M3 having ridden in a few at the track. Great combination of handling, light(ish) weight, seating position/feedback, and that amazing sounding I6. The Euro-spec 321 hp E36 M3 would have made an interesting comparison in the video.

Also having watched the video, it's interesting how certain BMW's (E30 M3, 3.0 CSL, etc.) have that timeless quality of looking fantastic even today.

Interesting tidbit, the aluminum spaceframe was too rigid, over time it developed cracks. The preemptive solution was to drill holes in it allowing the chassis to flex and relieve strain at the joints. I believe BMW had to rebuild a few cars for customers before they rolled out the fix.

Edit: To be on topic, what strikes be about BMW is that they don't seem to lose the spirit in the older cars even as practicality is added. From the 2002 wagon to the M5 wagon, another pair of doors and seats wasn't a death sentence for performance.

I've got a hankering for an e36 sedan in techno violet at the moment...

I was young when I saw it and never had interest in it. So the $135,000 price tag made me think it was some super car. Ofcourse I was about 6 at the time.
