Advice on this HKS kit Please!

Am looking to get a supercharger for my 2013 FRS. Came across this kit with pre programed software.

Was wondering if a stock car needs anything other than that kit to run safely?
Does anyone have any idea how well the out of the box Tune will work?

I need my car for daily use. I only want about 50-70hp and more torque. I don't plan to track the car (well maybe a bit but not beat on it) but do want it to pull from time to time.

Any advice would be welcome!

I'm not 100% familiar with FI but that kit should have everything you need(otherwise why make a kit). Of course there are other mods you could do to"support" it like an oil cooler but honestly if it's a DD you don't really need anything else. Have you considered e85 and headers instead? Will cost much less but won't be as big a power bump. Something to think about

I wish it was law to have e85 at every station. I have 2 within 20min drive, so DD e85 isn't an option.

Then SC is probably the next best option. Should be fine with just that kit. I don't know anything about the HKS tuning option though. Might be better with Ecutek or OFT for future tunability. Dunno

Just wondering also, the tune that comes with the HKS Ver.3 Kit, is that for the stock header? Or aftermarket header?

Or it doesn't matter?

Just wondering cause on the website it just says 91 tune.

It will matter. There is a thread on here for/by the HKS rep, I'd find it and ask him. I think his name is Tony or Torry

Found it, thanks man!

The calibrations supplied in the Flash Editor (and the dyno results) were generated using the required HKS Spark Plugs, HKS Stainless Exhaust Manifold, HKS Stainless Center Pipe, and HKS Hi-Power Spec-L exhaust. I'm confident a comparable header/manifold will still work with the pre-loaded calibrations however, the degree of difference in performance vs. the HKS manifold will be the degree of difference in driveability and output. Of course you can always have one of our Pro-Dealers tweak or create a custom cal. for you.

Np. When I got my HKS mid pipe and new over pipe Delicious didn't think the tune needed changed so I'll bet the headers make the biggest difference. Keep in mind they probably tuned on their equal length pipes which make better power than unequal

If you're going to use the OTS HKS e85 tune, you'll also need to have their high boost pulley and injector set.

Torry@HKSUSA 06-01-2016 09:30 AM

The HKS tune is a simple ECU flash. It takes all of about 2 minutes to do. You can also flash back to stock at any time with ease.

The V3 supercharger kit comes with the Flash Editor preloaded with two tunes - 91 octane and E85. The E85 requires you to also have the upgraded HKS supercharger pulley as well as upgraded injectors.

A 93 octane tune is also available but you must first connect your flash editor with the 91 tune then send it to us so we can add the 93 tune as an option.

Our 91 and 93 tunes were created using HKS equal length header, midpipe, and catback. These are not required for the tune, but you will simply make less power with using the stock exhaust components. Our testing put down 244 whp on 93 octane on a Mustang dyno with the full HKS exhaust. On the stock exhaust, expect about 20 hp less, give or take.

If you are looking for a custom tune, any HKS Pro Dealer will be add a custom tune to the Flash Editor. There is a selection for "Power Writer" which is where we add the 93 tune if you send it into us. Otherwise an HKS Pro Dealer can do a custom tune in that slot.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Torry@HKSUSA 06-01-2016 09:48 AM

Also, just to be clear so there is no confusion:

HKS states in the manual that an upgraded cat-back and header are required. These are required to create the power that HKS states the kit will make, and that is what the tune was created for. However, a more restrictive exhaust (such as stock) should not affect the required tune, just the power output.

This is all great to know! That was actually going to be my next question today, if you could still run this setup with stock components. Thanks Torry!

Really need to start saving up for this :D

Torry any updates for us with 2015 FRS,s ecm flashes. I am ready to purchase and am currently running an oft also here in Atlanta we have to deal with the emission crap. Can you point me in the right direction of any shops in our area that can't tweak the programs to pass the emissions. I am planning on keeping the stock header and cat. I already have a cat back. Thanks for any insight. Best regards Steve

HKS engineers were here a week ago and finished development for 2015 and 2016 models. They now have to update the software for the current inventory on-hand. We are expecting to receive the production version of the updated software next week sometime and will be making the official announcement probably the following week. So it's really close to being done.

For emissions in Atlanta, you have nothing to worry about. The supercharger kit will not through a check engine light and you are keeping your cat. That's really all they look for. I'm originally from Atlanta so I'm familiar with their emissions tests and they aren't anything to worry about, unlike CA's CARB certificates.
