Ceramic Coating - keeps heat in or out?
I'm getting my exhaust manifold ceramic coated, and was wondering if I should get my aluminum intake pipe coated as well? Would ceramic coating help insulate the intake pipe from external radiant heat?
I'm asking because if ceramic coating only helps keep the heat in (i.e. within the exhaust manifold) rather than blocking out heat, then I would rather save my money and leave the intake pipe as is (chrome). |
Works for both. Probably won't do much for the intake pipe. Metal intake pipe is a bad idea either way.

Of zero consequence, since the intake tube is not a significant source of heat transfer to the intake air charge.

i mean.. insulation is insulation. Works both ways, just straight up blocks the transfer of heat.
Not sure how much it'll really matter for the intake though |
Thanks for the input guys. I'll be installing the SBD kit, which has the intake pipe running above the turbine housing (the plan is to ceramic coat the manifold, dump, and turbo housing). I guess I might as well get the intake pipe coated too.

I personally believe anything in the engine bay will eventually equalise in temperature (engine bay ambient) so whether or not you coat the intake will only delay the time it'll take for the intake tube to reach equilibrium temperature. Focus on minimising engine bay ambient temps through header/exhaust wrapping and/or coating and thatll probably be the best result for you. Metal is also extremely effective heat conductor so you're battling against the elements in this case

I can vouch for TC1 black ceramic coating of the manifold both internal & external, pretty decent reduction in under hood heat that's for sure.

The only thing we've seen make a difference is using gold heat tape on the intake pipe and manifold, even then it was only a few degrees.

Ceramic coating is a "thermal barrier", it does not care which side the heat is, it just makes a barrier for heat transfer.
