Best shifter
I have a stock shifter with a TRD short shift kit. It came loose today and I nursed it to the dealer in 3rd gear. They fixed it, but it doesn't seem that great now. What is the best shifter? I'm looking for something that looks stock and uses stock rev lockout and knob.

Stock.
Everybody seems to have a hardon for MTEC springs and uprated shifter bushings as well. |
So your opinion is the stock one by itself is the best? I'm for stock look but function is #1. I drive very fast in the hills.

What do you mean it "came loose"?
If you're talking about the TRD quickshifter (not to be confused with the TRD Japan shortshifter), there's a part in the install that requires blue loctite application - I'm wondering if that was missed, because I've had mine for about a year and a half, and I've never had issues. |
Yes,trd quick shifter that extends the bottom, sold at USA Toyota dealers. I was thinking the same thing about the loctite. The dealer installed it for me. Dealer retightened it today. I have no doubt it will come loose again. Suddenly I couldn't put it in 1st or 2nd and everything was slop.

That seems to be a common problem with the TRD short shifter. Mine came loose after a couple of months. I stripped out the previous loctite, reapplied it, and retightened. It's been good for over two years now.

I've also got the MTEC springs, but can't really comment on how necessary that is (never tried the TRD without them). A weighted shift knob (I have a 1lb stainless) also smooths the motion as well (while reducing the rattle that the stock knob often has). |
Stock shift knob is OK but I have been thinking to get a weighted one. Or maybe I should get gloves. I don't like how the shift pattern sticker sticks to my sweaty hand. and it also feels loose.

The driving fast was more a reference for the need for smooth exact shifting, not stroke. I've had good shifters and bad in my track cars in the past, mostly 911s with clunky 915 tyrannys. I have plenty of sports car driving experience and my $.02 is a good short shifter makes it more convenient. I have also had short shift kits that make shifting worse. I'm the last guy into something because it is "cool". I'm about performance.

Definitely +1 sometimes making it worse lol. I hear ya then :)
