Is oil getting past turbo or coming from engine?

The one thing I know for sure is that oil is coming out the exhaust, I can actually see it sitting in the exhaust tips.

But it doesnt smoke all the time, its intermittent. Sometimes at idle, sometimes when I take off, but not always.

A local shop is leaning more towards the turbo because it is intermittent.

Any chance it could be coming from the engine? Maybe just when under boost? I say this because I've noticed when smoke starts coming out the exhaust, it jumps a bit at idle. It drops to about 500rpm then raises to about 1200rpm before settling back down, but again, it doesnt do it all the time.

Still accelerates like a bat out of hell, and I hear no unusual sounds from under the hood. No hesitations whatsoever under normal driving conditions.

I only have about 200 miles since the build - Stock motor, 11psi tune, PTE5858 turbo.

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?

Are you SURE its oil and not just moisture combined with the products of incomplete combustion .......... ??

Pull the turbo and charge piping and check for oil where it shouldn't be and report back. Sometimes when there's no restrictor on the oil feed or the line flows too much for a BB turbo, it'll seep past the seals.

However, this likely isn't a one off custom and half assed setup, so I have my doubts of the above...

Well when the shop had it up in the air, he told me he could see oil coming out of the connecting points of the exhaust (front pipe to straight pipe, and straight pipe to muffler). But of course that doesnt answer your question.

If that is the case, is it just a tuning issue? I havent done any datalogging since I was sent the initial tune.

I was told to take a look inside the turbo manifold to check for any signs of oil, and if some was found, it would have to be coming from the engine. But if it is what you said, there would moisture everywhere, so that wouldnt tell me anything correct?

At this point I would rather not assume its the turbo, or even oil now that you brought that up. I would hate to send the turbo to PTE just for them to tell me there is no problem with it. On top of the car being out of comission for a good 3-4weeks.

There is suppose to be an oil restrictor built within the center section. I suppose I could take off the feed line and make sure its there :)

Oil will never make it that far to the exhaust tips without a lot of (blue) smoke. If you don't see smoke and you see oil on the tips, it's not oil.

That would be my best guess .... I'd check the air fuel ratio .... it may be running real rich.

Like @mav1178 mentions, if you have that much oil in the exhaust system, it surely would be blowing blue smoke.

Well, now, FaDuck ......... have you done the datalogging to check the AFR .....??

The deposit on the tail pipes looks more like "rusty water" than oil or a rich running AFR to me ....... :iono:

I suggest you check the AFR, and clean up the tail pipes to be able to see any fresh deposit (or not).

Maybe some condensation settled in the exhaust system, created some rusty water, then blew it out the back ...... :iono:
