Ignition system explaination?

I'm wondering, do GT-86's have a traditional ignition system? That is, ignition coils and distributor? I am clueless about this.

No distributor.

4 ignition coils, 1 mounted directly on each individual spark plug. Each ignition event is controlled by the ECU.

There is an ignition map (fancy word for a table) that the ecu uses to determine when, relative to top dead center, the spark will happen.

The variables are rpm and engine load, in grams of air, by mass, ingested per rev.

There are supplemental tables which modify the ignition timing for knock compensation and cold starting, among other things.

And just a heads up radroach, if anyone tries to sell you spark plug wires to improve the performance, run away and never go back to them. Every now and then we get customers saying that so and so said they should do performance mods on systems the car doesn't even have.

Like the "audiophile quality" $10,000 Ethernet cables that are "directional"?

In all fairness - not all sparkplug wires are made equal.
If you use the wrong wires with a MSD CD ignition, I have heard that it will fry the MSD electronics.
