Broken Assembly Bolt
 

I’m working on a set of old Work Eroline DH’s and a few of the old assembly bolts broke on removal, Thought I would get some input.

First off, they are Welded two piece wheel so the assembly bolts are purely cosmetic/ Not structurally holding the wheels together.


I have tried soaking them in WD-40 overnight and grabbing the reverse end of the bolt poking out from the back with some needle noses without success.

Also my attempts with a SpeedOut “Extractor” have failed (I was unable to bore into the bolt to create the indent for lifting)

- I think, a nut could be welded to the reverse end but I’m not equipped for this job

Anyone Know a Fabricator/Welder or Shop in the Los Angeles area that could help me out with these?

Or any other ideas for getting these dang things out?

The only way is to drill it out. You can try doing it yourself, use a spot drill frist to center it as best you can. Then use a drill that just about the same size of the bolt. Hopefully you'll get it.

If not find the next size up tap/drill.

They way I would do it is to use an industrial size drill press. Something that won't wonder out of center.

Yea i cant drill into the bolt with my hand drill at home it too hard, I'll have to take it into a local machine shop.

They will be able to handle it. Your drill bit may be dull. Hand drills wreck drill bits pretty quick

Quick update on this, took the wheels into a shop this weekend and he was able to drill them out and re-thread the holes. they are a bit loose but again cosmetic bolt so ill just use some sealant or something to assure they wont come flying out.

This is the shop that was able to help me. on a saturday.
