Anyone thinking of oil-extraction (from the top) oil changes?
I think I read from somewhere that Mercedes and some other European manufactures put their oil filters on the top, and they use pumps to extract oil from dipstick hole, as their standard oil change service procedure.
I wonder since this car has a top mounted oil filter, is it OK not to go under the car for the oil change? |
Perhaps, but I think this is more trouble than it's worth. Buy a set of ramps and a Fumoto valve and it should be easy and painless. This post has some good advice:

Thats like a dentist reaching up my ass to pull a tooth. Other than charging more, what's the point?

It would be less time (and easier) using a pump through the dipstick but the real question is how much can we pull out that way. My friend does it with a pump and he gets all but about .2 liters of the engines oil capacity, which i feel is pretty good. |
I'm not sure it's quicker though. Oil change bays are designed for the purpose. Maybe they weren't smart enough to leave a hole for the drain plug o underbody panels need to be removed on the Benz?

I've dune this all the time with my bimmers. I'm glad they put the oil filter on top too on the fed/brz. It's much easier to change and clean without ever having to Jack up a car. I do this every other oil change.

I do this every 5000km for my cooper S, in between the recommended 20,000km service intervals (to long!). It is very simple and a good alternative if you don't have a ramp. But I doubt it is quicker as you have to be there while the oil is being pumped out and I probably get about 80% of the oil out, but I think its better than not doing an oil change. Anyway, I get the dealer to do the proper oil change at the recommended intervals to really flush everything out.
