Strange tire wear

Hey, guys.

I went to adjust my AST coilovers today and noticed the inside shoulders of all my tires was wearing really oddly. It's almost squared off and parts are chunking.

My Michelin Pilot Super Sports are at the end of their life, but I haven't seen tires wear this way before.

My alignment is 0 toe all around -1.3° of camber in the front and -1.5° in the back. The fronts have noticeably worse wear than the rears. Strange thing is that read wear is even across the tire, except for the inner shoulders.

Any idea what's causing this? Is it just normal for tires at the end of their life to chunk?

Yep. Just curious why the inner wear is so severe.

"One Side Wear
When an inner or outer rib wears faster than than the rest of the tire, the need for wheel alignment is indicated. There is excessive camber in the front suspension, causing the wheel to lean too much to the inside or outside and putting too much load on one side of the tire. The car may simply need the wheels aligned, but misalignment could be due to sagging springs, worn ball joints, or worn control arm bushings. Because load has a great affect on alignment, be sure the car is loaded the way it's normally driven when you have the wheels aligned; this is particularly important with independent rear suspension cars."

Frustrating that this happened after new coilovers and alignment. I'll just replace the tires and watch the wear closely.

Never been to a track day or autox eh?

New tires and alginment (take it to an alignment shop, don't diy it.) . Problem fixed. Good day.

How many miles did you drive with the new coilovers overall?
How much time between installing coilovers and then alignment?
What's your camber at?

Sounds like too much camber or bad alignment or both.

Looks like toe wear to me but if your specs are actually what you quoted you shouldn't be having extreme wear like that.

I've driven 3k miles on the coilovers overall. The car was aligned immediately after installing them. Camber is at -1.3 in the front and -1.5 in the rear.

I'm thinking @Tcoat was right about the springs settling after the install and affecting the alignment.

At this rate, I'm going to get a new set of tires and another alignment just to be safe.

I would try to convince the place that did your original alignment to give you another one free of charge, based on the assumption that they should've had you come back for the alignment after driving around post install for a week or so.

Ya. Things seem to need time to settle.

EAGLE5 04-03-2016 05:56 PM

Driving fast also messes things up. I can't imagine you bought those expensive coilovers just to drive slowly.

PandaBRZ 04-18-2016 03:22 AM

Just a quick update for everyone.

I had the car's alignment checked and everything was up to spec as when I had the coilovers installed. That means it wasn't the alignment settings causing the wear, but a defect in the tire at the end of its life. It seems to me that the MPSS deteriorate rapidly towards the end of its life, kinda like a Die Hard battery. When it dies, it DIES.

I replaced them with another set of MPSS and the wear is fine after 1,000 miles. I'll keep an eye on the tires and will report back any anomalies.
