BRZ vs 86 radio

Hey guys

New here and just want to make sure about something. This may be a very dumb question, but is the BRZ and the 86's radio's identical? I am looking at getting this headunit once I buy the car, but need to know it will work in the BRZ as well: http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/visual...ion/ddx715wbt/

Thanks in advance

As far as I can see and tell, they're identical.

Same hilux radio I had.

Not at all like mine. I have the 86 hi-spec. It's a big touch screen. Wouldn't they be likely to have the same connectors to the car though?

The cars will all have the same Toyota harnesses, only with different radios fitted from the factory.

This isn't entirely true, the BR-Z navigation head unit not only has a subaru gps antenna which is easy to get.

The FR-S/GT86/86 HU sends power to the car's antenna booster amplifier via the separate single-conductor wire on the AM/FM antenna connector.

The BRZ HU sends the 12V power antenna signal out via pin #8 on the 10-pin power/speaker harness.

You'll need to rig up an adapter harness (or at least, add a jumper wire from the vacant slot on your car's 10-pin plug to the factory pin/wire on your car's AM/FM antenna plug.

This has been proven in other threads, that's why it's not worth transplanting one of the twins head units into each other unless they can be had for super cheap.

Awesome thanks for the reply. So would the above Kenwood headunit work?

You may need to get a qualified installer to do it, there's another issue with our cars, the door speakers have a separate amplifier, and most head units aren't pinned to turn that amplifier on therefore the door speakers don't work but all others do. The result is the sound is low quality.

Those threads may help

Ok, will definitely check with my installer. I am changing the whole system though, but thanks for the heads up

Super useful info, thanks for helping us Africans out @ :D

I opted to not pay extra for the built in navigation. My experience with any "built-in" software vs a dedicated solution has usually ... left much to be desired. Is it possible to a) enable this without the dealership or b) just pay $$ to have it activated?

Does anyone have the GPS running on their 86 and is it worth it?

I use waze (on my phone) with a holder thing similar to what the uber drivers use. Hands free and the app is free too!

I don't know if our head units are similiar, but I bought a simple module, gps antenna, and a special harness and it enables the OEM toyota Entune system and navigation not sure if it works on your car.

I don't like head unit navigation. I have a Kenwood DDX715WBTM so I mirror my phone's Google Maps for navigation and realtime traffic.

Hmm. Is it targeting the 86 specifically? If it's a super custom solution, it probably won't be available easily in ZA. Is it reliable?

I also use Google Maps, but the amount of battery drain is insane.
