Dump tube sound changable?
I'm running a D3PE turbo and it uses a short dump tube off the wastegate. When I get over 3 psi that opens up and puts out a sound that is somewhat undesirable. Id describe it as a somewhat high pitch wail, what you'd imagine a lot of air through a 1.5in pipe might sound like. Is there a simple way to alter this?

I have heard it will decrease the scream so I can hear the turbo spooling but will also lose hp and I'd like to keep max hp with lowest possible boost in order to keep stress off the engine. I was hoping more for a replacement dump tube or an attachment I guess. Hearing that trill at higher boost would be pretty sweet though!

Recirculate it. If it's going to cause a loss in power your exhaust is probably too small to begin with. No other way around it really. If you try to muffle the dump tube you're hurting flow, if not worse than recirculating to the downpipe

I have the TRD exhaust but just read that you can lose some HP in another forum. I don't want it muffled so much as a different sound though. I can't find anything about doing that though so figuring it might not be a thing.

As long as a competent individual does the fab work and the its recirc'd in a good place at a good angle you will be just fine. HP loss is extremely minimal it also doesnt sound like your really stretching for the every last HP anyway.

The only way of changing the sound would be to extend length of the pipe or maybe add a tiny silencer on it which would defeat the purpose of having it by adding more weight to your car and etc, or recirculate it back into the exhaust(BEST OPTION).
I have a JDL Autodesign kit with a Open dump, It doesn't open up till 9 Psi but that puppy screams when its open, I would suggest moving to a bigger spring in your wastegate so you're not always opening it up after giving it gas. You can even get a Electronic boost controller after moving to a bigger psi spring so you can limit the amount of boost you run, but I think the lowest setting on a boost controller is always your spring's rating. just my 2 cents. |

So much information, but so much back and forth info. I saw the same thing, but I keep seeing more often than not, there aren't huge downsides if done correctly. I'm hoping that's the true true answer. |
