Fuel injector Service?
 

Hey guys, not sure which section this belongs in, but I wanted to get opinions and experiences of fellow Canadians in particular anyways.

I'm approaching 60,000km. I called my "local" Subaru dealer to ask if they had any inspections they provide. When I worked at a Chrysler dealer we had what they called the Peace Of Mind Inspection. 30 point inspection, $29.95. We also had The Total Check-Up which was 100 some odd points. $89.95, which was essentially just an Ontario safety check.

The woman I spoke to said at 60k we're due for a C Service, which among other things includes a fuel injector service. The cost of this service though is $650. I don't have that kind of money for a glorified oil change and fuel injector service.

In essence I just want them to check the car out and change anything that needs to be changed under warranty. I know I have a leaky shock, so I'd rather Subaru pay for it.


My real question here since I do all my own oil changes and regular maintenance is if anybody has done the fuel injector service or not. I don't notice any problems with the car right now, but I also don't want to void my warranty because I didn't do it.

Have you done it at another garage?

Here is the list of what to do at 60,000km according to the Subaru Canada website.

Scheduled maintenance for 60,000 km / 36 Months
Replace engine oil and filter
Rotate tires
Inspect tire condition and adjust all tire pressures including spare tire
Remove, inspect and service front and rear brakes including parking brake
Inspect and adjust all fluid levels including both differentials
Inspect operation of all lights, wipers and washers
Inspect and adjust drive belt tension if necessary
Full battery service and test
Inspect axle boot condition
Lubricate all latches, hinges and locks (hood, doors, fuel door and trunk lid)
Inspect all steering and suspension components
Inspect under body for damage
Test coolant, inspect hoses and clamps
Inspect engine & air cabin filters - replace if necessary
Replace brake fluid
Service fuel injectors
Inspect all emission-related hoses
Inspect PCV valve - replace if necessary
Road test vehicle

Very interested. I'm a couple K away from 60K too. Seems early for injector service. I wonder if that is more than a bottle of cleaner in the tank.

As I recall Subaru offered me that fuel injector service on my 2011 WRX as it approached 60K. They were charging $300 something 1 1/2 years ago. I ended up buying the car at 55K and trading the car at under 60K so never did it.

Supposedly they run 3 chemicals thru the fuel system, and there is a kit Subaru sells with three bottles of chemicals to do this. The difference is they have a machine they use to do the service.

I am not sure how absolutely necessary this is if you use the best fuel, min 91 octane but perhaps it will clean out any gummy deposits that might exist.

The other pricey service is fuel filter, which I think is at 100K. That service requires accessing in/around the fuel tank. I will most likely just go to a known Subaru (non-dealer) shop when the time comes.

Using 94 exclusively, I am pretty confident my fuel system will stay clean pretty long.

I might just replace the PCV valves myself on my 2 cars with FA20 engines when they're due.

Honestly if you run top tier gas then your combustion chamber getting fouled is a bigger issue then injectors. All gas nowadays has a lot of cleaners in them and its great for keeping injectors clean, however they tend to leave a lot of deposits in the combustion chamber. The dealership is selling this service just to make money. If you really want use a few bottles techron concentrate in your gas tank and it will help clean anything out. Mind you Techron is not cheap, but it is the best additive out there for fuel.

I'm not concerned about the injectors being gummy. I only use Shell 91 (except that time I filled up two or three times in the states when I couldn't find a shell, but used mobile).

My concern is more for the warranty. If the motor were to ever go pop, I don't want them to say hey, you didn't do your injector service.

Hey, I'm at 85,000 km and have passed both general warranty buckets (60k and 80k). Since I do my brakes and alignments not at the dealer, the Toyota dealers have put me onto an alternate (read: lower cost service intervals, what nice guys at the service dept) service schedule.

At both thresholds, fuel injector cleaning was not brought up. I reckon it was at 96k though.

I think these service "packets" are a money-grab.

I just had my service B done. $450 for a cabin air filter, oil and filter change, brake service, and inspection of major components. $450!!! Most of that is labour but that seems extravagant.

I did it late, too. Supposed to be done around 30-40k. I did mine at 55k. So now I'm creeping up on this "Service C" you're speaking of, and there's no way in hell I'm shilling out ANOTHER $650 for basically nothing.

My 3-year/60k already expired because of time, not mileage, anyways...

90% of the services on that list can be done by anyone who knows anything about car maintenance. I've never been denied any warranty claims for refusing to service my car at the dealer. Then again I've never blown an engine (that was under warranty that is).
