Best bang for buck oil cooler
 

Hey Guys,

I've recently installed a sprintex 210 intercooled supercharger system. I'm looking for an oil cooler. I've been thinking about the mishimoto option. Is here any feedback or suggestions for others.

I"m looking for one that offers good performance for the money, but is not necessarily top of the line. I think its a good idea i get one as i will be doing spirited drives, but i will not track the car.

Edit: I forgot to mention i do live in a coldish climate (-6C in Winter) so I need to to heat up quickly in winter as well.

@Docmattic check out the racerx kit. I strongly believe their thermostatic sandwich plate to be the best design on the market.

Thanks for considering our oil cooler kit Nick. In a climate such as that, you are definitely going to want some form of thermostat in the system. We do offer a kit with a thermostatic sandwich plate, which includes a 85°C thermostat. This unit is serviceable and can be swapped for a 71°C or 93°C unit.

In terms of performance, we use a very efficient 19-row cooler which is mounted within the front bumper. The cooler sees a ton of airflow which translates to impressive heat transfer. On a similar sized engine with similar airflow, we typically see temperature drops of around 15°C -20
°C from inlet to outlet.

Hey I run a @Mishimoto cooler and it works great for me. I do take the thermostat out all together for the winter to minimize oil flow to the core, however I do see -35C in the winter. My oil temps sit at 190F (with no thermostat in the winter) same as water temps and doesn't take much longer to warm up at all.

Only thing I did was open and smooth the ports in the thermostat sandwich plate for better flow .

To answer your question, the best bang for your buck would be a homebrew system, or the stock FA20DIT retrofit.
As already mentioned, you want a system with a thermostatic switch.

Does it have a thermostat?

CX Racing. Need a ton of Teflon tape for the threaded fittings, but its a big radiator, nice hoses and excellent mounting point. Mine sits in front of the radiator (behind intercooler). Not too sure how vital a thermostat unit is if the coldest if ever gets is -6C. You must be in the south, maybe Adelaide?

The Australian dollar exchange, shipping and tax considered, it's a good deal. Being in Canada, we're in the same situation with a devaluated currency and that motivated me off the beaten path of popular brand names. Once I discovered the need for copious amounts of Teflon tape I found the product otherwise highly acceptable.

I dont think the Forester oil cooler will be anywhere near enough for a Sprintex kit that already runs hot. The DIT retrofit is barely enough on an NA car (and thats debateable depending on your driving habits even)

Homebrew is definitely cheapest but the Maximal isnt much more and it comes with mounts and precut lines. It is essentiallly a premade homebrew if that makes sense

Agreed. Aside from a homebrew, it's probably the best bang for your buck.
I just don't like how tiny the oil cooler is, but it should fit 95% of peoples needs. I prefer to err on the side of caution by running the largest cooler that will fit, while keeping temps in line with thermostats.

FA20DIT setup is good enough for most people.

For those looking for a plug and play unit, the Jackson Racing unit uses a nice large Setrab core with plenty of testing on the fittings and bracket/fasteners. The thermostat sandwich plate is a Mocal unit. The complete package comes with simple and easy to follow instructions to complete your install. :thumbup:

FWIW, my Maximal oil cooler kept my oil temps in check fine in ~60 degree F track days. I'll have to see what it does in the dead of summer at 95 degrees, but even if it goes up 20 degrees I'm still safely within the limits of synthetic oil. That said, a bigger core mounted further back would definitely be a good thing and pretty much a requirement for FI. I really like the placement of the AVO oil cooler and their nice ducting for it. Too bad they use stupid SS braided lines and the install is a gigantic PITA.
