High Pitch Whine?
 

Hey guys, recently I've been hearing this high pitch whine coming from the front end of my car. It reminds me of a straight cut gear, or even a supercharger whine. I've never heard before this, and it's very random. Only seems to pop up when it wants to.

I got a quick video of it, hopefully you can hear it.

Any ideas?

It's interesting. I'm going to guess it's one of the belt-driven accessories since I hear it clutch both engaged and disengaged. Did a twig or something maybe fall into the alternator?

It's pretty subtle but you can hear just like what OP says is noisy gears. Reminds me of gear driven camshaft conversion on an old v8 or a timing belt that's stretched too tight. Follows the engine when he blips the throttle.

It does whine while sitting still, but as the RPMs climb, the noise gets higher pitched, just like a straight cut gear.

I'll have a look around, but I don't think so..

I was kinda half joking but something in there is failing or rubbing.

To follow up on ol @Ultramaroon 's theory, I'd suggest you find a long screwdriver or a metal rod and place one end up near your ear and touch the other end around on things in the engine (like the belt driven things) to see if you can isolate the sound/noise.

All kidding aside, loose clothing and long hair are a no-no.

Oh, yes .... and DON'T stick the rod in your ear ...... stick the end of an old wooden handled screwdriver on the end of the rod and put that up to your ear ...... wooden handled screwdriver, you ask ...... yes, back in the day, screwdrivers had wooden handles, like monkey wrenches ...... :thumbsup:

OK, just improvise or buy a store bought scope.

Back in the day? I have some really nice wooden handled screwdrivers.

Speaking of whine, is it normal to be able to hear the transmission in this car? I can't figure out if I'm only just now noticing it, or if something is wrong, but you can definitely hear gear whine in the lower gears in thus thing.

I've had it forever, I think just when it's cold.

Someone brought up the suggestion of dying Alternator Diodes. It kind of would make sense, as my car has been sluggishly turning on the last two/three months, as if it doesn't have enough power to start.

Think that may be the culprit?
