List of dB levels for aftermarket exhausts.

I got an idea when I was measuring the effect of sound deadening on my car. Using your Android or iPhone you can measure the dB levels so can we have people with different exhaust and stock exhausts measure the loudness at different RPMs so people can have an idea of how loud each exhaust is? Of course parameters need to be controlled so..

- Top of phone under the shift knob at neutral
- Car must be warmed up
- Test must be done outdoors (driveway is fine)
- No sound deadening
- Radio off, Fan/AC off
- Measure dB level @ idle (650rpm), 5000rpm, and 7000rpm.
- Other mods?
- What phone?

It should look something this for example (for me):

Exhaust: Tsudo Headerback Exhaust
Other Mods: Unichip tune, Injen intake
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3
Idle: ##dB
@5000rpm: ##dB
@7000rpm: ##dB

I have sound deadening so my measurement wouldn't be accurate but I'll do it after work anyways.
Android app (free):https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...51bGwsMSwyLDNd

This is mostly for interior cabin noise as that is what most people would care about.

Reserved for list if this takes off.

My SRT headerback measure 89dB when I got it checked for autox rules. Will check cabin dB with app if people actually care

It's also going to matter if the measurement is done in a garage or wide open space... I will get these for my nameless catted front / over pipe and nameless 3" axleback.

Might also want to add the first 30 seconds from a cold start routine since that is BY FAR the loudest time other than wot. Also windows up or down?

I'll add that to the list, has to be outdoors. I'm sure the outside environment won't affect the interior cabin noise too much so any outdoor is fine.

:) I feel like I'm above 98 with a decatted front pipe

You likely are.
I'm curious what our cars would sound like with decatted front pipe, over pipe and EL header. I think deafening would be a good word.

This was with the windows up.
Exhaust: Nameless performance revised offset axleback and Nameless Performance overpipe/downpipe with sport car and helmholz resonator
Other Mods: Perrin cold air intake and silicon intake hose, all Whiteline bushings (trans, diff, suspension, etc), Perrin pully,
Phone: Motorola Razor HD
Idle: 65dB
@5000rpm: 83dB *under load in 1st gear not sitting in neutral
@7000rpm: 91dB *under load in 1st gear not sitting in neutral

you know the OEM exhaust decibels?

brichard0625 10-20-2014 10:58 AM

Windows up, Inside cabin front of phone under shift knob
Exhaust: j2 quad
Mods: Ebay injen knockoff/crawford powerblocks/amr catless frontpipe/ecutek flexfuel tune
phone/app: Galaxy s4/sound meter
idle/neutral(750-800rpm):71db
1st gear underload(5000rpm):84db
1st gear underload(7000rpm) 89db

Not sure how accurate this app is but its great way to benchmark exhausts if everyone uses the same app. Noise level sounds way louder than 89db to me.
