RIP Porsche Cayman (going electric in 2025)

Ugh. Kiss another lightweight (by today's standards) interactive sports car good-bye.

Cayman going all electric in 2025. Gaining at least 600 lb and higher trim models will be AWD.

The internal target weight is under 3650 pounds.

I wish Porsche would try making more minimalist lightweight sports cars rather than oversized and overweight lifestyle accessories that are fast.

It is for sure *possible* to build a small, light(ish)-weight electric sports car. I hope somebody does...

This is why I really haven't been much of a Porsche fan the last couple decades.

Well, the first Tesla roadster weighed in at under 2900 lbs with a 53 kWh battery and 240 miles of range. Granted, that was somewhat based on a car that weighed under 2000 pounds (the Lotus Elise).
With the new Lotus EV platform also leaning towards the porky side, I kinda doubt we'll ever see a lightweight EV sports car. After Lotus (and Alpine, their partner in crime), my hopes are now on Mazda with a gram-light EV Miata...

battery tech is improving and I expect it to be a good car.

So what you're saying is that if someone does want to get a GT4, they have 4 years until the prices completely explode. More so than they already have.

Will be interesting to see what Lotus comes up with : https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/09...c-sports-cars/

And to see if this is all just talk like their previous announcement of multiple cars. They at least have Geely money now.

Sad but long as the ND2 convertible and 86 coupe exist, I’m a happy camper. I’ll be much more sad when those two inevitably get electrified or axed.

This is something I notice with the current line up of EVs. They are either boring white goods shopping trolleys or expensive (relative statement I know) luxury items. There are no EV BRZ equivalents atm.

They are already crazy.

Sold my 16 gt4 for the price I paid almost with 30k miles on it. Once electrified, sports cars sub 3000 lbs will be a thing of the distant past. Current battery tech is just too heavy.

Previous generation Cayman was a comparison model for the first generation 86/BRZ. The performance gap was not that big, but when the 718 came out the difference went huge cause of the turbo. I expect a similar situation will happen with the new Cayman and the second generation 86/BRZ. Porsche is always one step ahead.
