Non overkill suspension?

Looking for suspension that will keep the stock characteristics of the car, but will be suited for a mild drop (~1”) with track appropriate wheels and tires. I’d like to do a max of 5 track days a season. Should I look into springs/shocks or a coilover system? I think the end goal is to run a 235 series tire on an 18x8.5 or 18x8 wheel. This will be for a 2022 BRZ bought for weekend warrior fun. Had racecomp yellows on my first gen, and I’m leaning towards the racecomp ss coils for the 2nd gen.

I’d look at RCE yellows again with your choice of shock (stock/Koni/Bilstein).

Coilovers get stiff fast. Stock springs are around 3.5kg/mm, RCE yellows are ~4.5kg/mm. I can’t think of any coilover that’s under 6kg/mm.

I run Bilstein B6 and H&R springs and am happy with it. I don’t like to adjust things so this works for me. In addition to -3 front and -2 rear camber and better sway bars the car is well balanced on the track

Will spring/shock combo limit me as far as wheels/tire choices? I need functional over form.

You just need to be aware of the wheel offsets

Ohlins R/T is 5kg/mm F/R I believe.

ST are also pretty soft, looks like less then 4k F/5k R, and twin tubes are pretty good for road comfort. Racecomp SS are slight stiffer then ST iirc, might be an acceptable tradeoff for road comfort and track performance.

Edit: Ohlins were like 4k/3k for awhile

Lowering springs will allow you to use 8” wide wheels just fine in +35-+45 offset (lower offset means more camber from bolts though, you can get -3 with +40 on stock diameter springs), 225 wide tires are more widely available then 235 which is a bit of an oddball size, most manufacturers skip over it for niche track oriented compounds and go to 245 which is happier on a 9” or wider.

ST Coilover V3

If it's good enough for drift King, It's good enough for you. :bonk:

Structurally the same as Racecomp Superstreets (SS-1). Do the V3's have both bump and rebound adjust?

ST XTA 3 are 3 way adjustable tho, without external canisters and different valving from the hybrid mono/twin tube design from Clubsport 3 way for example…they’re still amazing for that price, springs are 6k 5k like every ST coils

I was in a similar situation and went with the SS-1 and have been extremely happy with them. They work great for autocross/track on the stiffest settings and are still very easy to live with for daily driving on the softer settings. Camber adjustment on these was a big selling point vs springs and shocks.

If you're just daily driving and want to reduce wheel gap, 1 inch lowering springs are the way to go. If you're going to be tracking the car or want to run wider tire setups, start looking into coilovers with adjustable tophats. A good street coilover capable of mild track work is the RCE SS1 which I've seen mentioned in this thread and I personally use. If you want something geared to more serious track work, we'd need more detail about your setup, skill level, budget, etc.

Stock with TRD lowering springs and swaybars was slightly stiffer ride then stock. Big change was bilstein B6; MUCH stiffer ride than stock.

Check out the CSG Spec Flex A. Rides better than stock. Handles on track. Adjust clicks to go from street car to track car.

It's just been finished for the 2022, and should arrive in April/May ish.
