Antenna Delete no Weld Version with Carbon Plaque

3 Attachment(s)
So I hate the look of the antenna on the roof, just think it ruins the fine shape of this car... anyway I used a Carbon Fiber Console Plaque. It was meant for that purpose but I changed a design. So I bought the center plaque from http://www.innovateddynamics.com/pro...-holder-plaque

For $15 it is a steal. It's hand made to order. So I decided to give it a try using it to use as a cover for the hole well it worked. I plan to paint it when the weather outside allows as I do not have a garage. So it can be very easy or slightly difficult. Easy version, remove old antenna, clean area the size of the plaque use 3M DS tape and add silicone sealant around the rectangular hole for peace of mind and done!

For even more peace of mind I epoxied a 3/4" long 1/4-20 thread cut off a bolt. This takes more time and I secure it with a flat washer and wing nut. Overkill but I'd rather make sure it doesn't fly off. But tape should be fine.

I will upload more detailed pics later but here's the result before I paint it this spring. I have the simple install instructions in my build thread page 12

Haha. You think the antenna ruins the lines of the car so you stick a rectangular piece of metal on there that doesn't sit flush? Logic.

Sorry that looks terrible IMO.

If welding and painting was $15 I'd do that. Lol. This is not the best way but the best I could figure out that is cost effective.:iono:

If the objective was to remove the antennae and cover the hole, it looks like a success. But aesthetically speaking, the solution does not look good.

Actually I don't use the radio so this is a win win. I don't like the sharkfin antenna and I needed to cover the hole. I looked for some type of plug but couldn't find anything. I would wanted something smaller but there is nothing out there and welding and repaint is the best alternative which i don't have the $$ to spend on a hole. It accomplished my goal but to me it looks 100% better than the sharkfin.

Ok I will bite.

Or you could just vinyl wrap the whole roof?? Personally I dont like the whole wrap thing but at least it wont be such an eye sore. Wrap can be had cheap and you can install yourself.

I thought about wrap also but being a 1x1 1/2" hole it seems expensive to do that for a hole. This is much less of an eyesore than that hunk of plastic jutting out of th roof..lol Thanks man

You can buy enough to do the whole roof for $25 off ebay I bet haha. Yeah each to his own, to be totally honest I hate the stock antenna as well, and dislike my sharkfin but I live with it for now. Oneday I might have to hole filled and roof painted.

if you do only vinyl and wrap the roof, the hole area will still be visible as that part will "sink" in compared to the rest of the roof. plus the vinyl will be so thin that if anything scratches it or even if theres enough air pressure, it'll puncture and make a hole.

Very true, the only logical thing I could think of to prevent that would be cut a piece of metal or some material to fit snug in the hole with jb weld, 3m glue or some sort of adhesive then vinyl over it and just keep putting vinyl on when the old vinyl wears out. But personally I think a shark fin follows the body lines way way better. This "antenna delete" comes off as something that will leak and cause problems later on in the cars life.

I used waterproof outdoor silicone around the hole perimeter in case water seeps through the adhesive.

I'm talking 2-3 years out, with a constant barrage of water and wind like on a highway at 60+ mph or something it will eventually wear away, most outdoor silicone aren't meant for that....

Ah k...well the silicone isn't exposed to the outside elements just temp. If it fails I'll just try something else.

Get a circle of metallic blue vinyl cut just big enough to cover it. They make thicker vinyls that won't be an issue as far as durability. Will be much less noticible.
