Varis 2JZ Build
November 6, 2016:
Hello, I decided to slightly reorganize my thread since it was cluttered. I've been tracking my FRS regularly since I've owned it and modified it along the way. Unfortunately, my motor went on Oct 9, 2016 while tracking it at Buttonwillow Raceway. Though it seems a bit soon given the motor has only 35k miles, it wasn't that surprising since everyone seems to blow up these motors. I already had a 2JZ planned but I didn't expect to do it so soon. Luckily I had been collecting parts for this build but I'm still a good while from finishing it. I should have this ready by summer time and hopefully in time for 86Fest and Speed Ring. Jason http://i.imgur.com/mnBdVu7.jpg?1 Current Modifications (parts in red are off. After a week of daily driving it, I took it out to Buttonwillow to see what it felt like stock. I threw on a few supporting mods like Raceseng cam plate, Perrin oil cooler and Cusco catch can to help the car. Surprisingly, the car was pretty fun and I clocked a 2:16 6 laps in. More to come on future posts!

Latest Hyper Rev from https://www.more-japan.com/
http://i.imgur.com/89VS9pC.jpg My Nagisa rails came in from https://www.more-japan.com/ It's actually pretty cool that they used Japanese newspaper to wrap the goods. As for the rails, the quality is just as good as the Bride ones. It didn't come with resistor for the airbag but I have a few Works Bell ones laying around for that. The seat I'm using is Bride Zeta 3 off my old car and my seating position is a good 2 inches lower. I'm 5'8 and it's kind of hard to see over the steering wheel now. http://i.imgur.com/iPkb6Yo.jpg http://i.imgur.com/SYB1exh.jpg https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hp...49182773_n.jpg |
Manhattan Beach Toyota has a listing on eBay right now for the F&R badge along with key cover for $65 to help purge the ugly Scion Badge.

Good stuff. I'm excited to see what else you have planned

Quality parts in your build BTW. Keep it up and keep us updated.

Works Bell long hub installed along with the Nardi steering wheel. There's honestly no reason to run anything other than Works Bell.

I like where this is going.

Wow. HyperRev is up to #6 for these cars??? Gotta go to J-Town...
Also, what did you do with the cruise control? |

Since I loved how the bronze ZE40 looked on my old car, I decided to pick up a set for the FRS.

Cool, do you have a kit coming in to balance the wing?

Cut a little too much to the left. Oh well!

Every FRS I looked used was stick. The one I bought was flawless except a few scratches on silver sections of the door. Not a lot of ricer cars here anymore like there used to be. I see a few kids of mixed races riced out. I mostly see Hispanics with ricers. I think a lot of folks grow out of that stuff. Probably more apparent in Cali. Used to be huge here but it just faded out along with big subwoofers.

Of course. People love to modify cars in Southern California. Cheap cars attract cheap owners

Can't wait to see the wheels and big wing on the car.

With the Christmas gone, I got myself some more parts! EVS resonated front pipe, Motive front pipe, Tomei UEL and Tomei 60S!
https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hp...37248463_n.jpg My friend Ken from Godspeed Project also gave me a sticker for the car! https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hp...73118996_n.jpg On a side note, since the weathers been chilly and I just sold my last car, I decided to take apart the motor on the old car to see what's salvageable from the blown engine. Bonus point if you know what it is :) https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hp...96357223_n.jpg |
Looks like your build is coming together nicely as well!

excited to see where this goes

With all the free time over the weekend, I decided to go dyno my car to get a baseline before and after my OFT stage 1 tune. The car felt like it had a lot of midrange gain with the tune and I wanted to dyno to support it.
Overall Power Before: 155 HP 135 LBFT After: 159 HP 140 LBFT Under the curve gain: +14 HP +17 LBFT The peak gain is slight but the midrange gain is pretty substantial. However, after reading the forum, it seems I shouldn't have flashed it back to stock at the dyno and flash it to stage 1 between pulls. Either way, I'm pretty impressed with it and will be getting another dyno next week when I put on my header and full exhaust. http://i.imgur.com/PDpSZxI.jpg http://i.imgur.com/lG4dJHT.jpg |
I went ahead and installed everything today and everything is pretty straight forward on it. As for the Tomei 60S, this is a very loud setup. It's not the loudest I have but maybe I'm just a bitch now and will probably part with the Tomei 60S. As for the header, I really hate the boxer rumble so the UEL is going to be up for sale. On a performance standpoint, I flashed it to OFT Stage 2 and it doesn't seem like there's any gains but I will give it a few hundred miles. I'm starting to toy with the idea of force induction since my last car had 3x the power of the FRS.

I've scoured the forums looking for dyno plots using the same car as a control, with a baseline, stg 1, and stg 2 comparison, but haven't come across anything. Really curious to see the results. Nice build! Gets better every time I click on your thread... |
Of course, I'll post it once I do it.

hmm .. wating for the dessert... |
I was sick today but my room mate had to go borrow something at the shop so I asked him to take my car.
Here are the dyno #'s with OFT Stage 2, Tomei UEL, Motive overpipe, Invidia catted front pipe, and Tomei 60S. Before with OFT Stage 1 Only: 159 HP 140 LBFT After with the full exhaust and OFT Stage 2 UEL map: 159 HP 142 LBFT Under the curve gain: +18 HP +25 LBFT http://i.imgur.com/OC2sehu.jpg With the header, it was disappointing not to gain any peak but it was surprising to gain so much in the mid range. This pretty much aligns with the power gains that Tomei published. http://www.tomeiusa.com/_2003web-cat...FRS_gluf_l.gif After the first 3 pulls, my room mate changed out my filter to the Apexi drop in and we dyno again to see if there were any gains. I didn't expect much since it was a drop in but was pleasantly surprised to see the gain through the entire powerband. The car was able to pick up 7HP and 2FTLB. Before with full exhaust and OFT Stage 2 UEL map: 159 HP 140 LBFT After with the full exhaust, Apexi drop in filter and OFT Stage 2 UEL map: 166 HP 144 LBFT http://i.imgur.com/CGMREav.jpg http://i.imgur.com/2h801nI.jpg While there, I also had him pick up my new Greddy Evolution GT catback since I couldn't handle the loudness of the Tomei 60S. I'll probably buy a new Tomei EL header and install with the Greddy when I get back from Japan in Feb. |

Here is the photo of the Greddy Evolution GT.
http://i.imgur.com/epD50jR.jpg http://i.imgur.com/L2Q5wE0.jpg Honestly, Greddy exhaust has always been solid and this is no different. Comes with everything you need to bolt onto the front pipe. This systems ditches the donut and replaces the spring bolts for regular bolts. My Project Mu HC+ and Project Kics R26 just came in! Unfortunately, the r26 is a bit short to my liking on the ZE40 so I may have to sell them. http://i.imgur.com/IysKUFJ.jpg |
Oh Hi! We know a lot of the same people lol.
