No License Plate?

Is anybody in New Jersey planning on not putting a license plate on the front?
I don't have my permanent plates yet but I am planning on not putting one on. Anyone else thinking this?

cRazy604 06-24-2012 04:18 PM

I would if i could but here in BC its illegal

Bonburner 06-24-2012 04:19 PM

Apparently its legal to drive without one for 6 months in cali :P
works for me

WolfsFang 06-24-2012 04:57 PM

It is illegal to drive without a front LP in NJ, but the car looks so much better without it. Im thinking of taking it off and seeing how long I can go before they catch me?

tjdiz92 06-24-2012 05:08 PM

Yeah it's Illegal in New Jersey and its a $50 fine! But my cousin has had a G37 for the past 6 years and has gotten a ticket twice for no FP. I think the car looks so much better and i thought the top bolts actually went into the bumper but theres just brackets into the front grille. My only thing is should i sacrifice looks to follow the law or just say screw it.

mezdup 06-24-2012 05:56 PM

eh it's really not worth it as it's fairly easy to spot a car that doesn't have front plates.

GenkiElite 06-24-2012 07:55 PM

Technically it's not legal in a lot of states but most cops could care less unless you're doing something else and they feel like tacking on some extras. I'm in Ohio and have been driving since 93. I've never had a front plate on any of the 15 or so vehicles I've had over the years and have never been pulled over or fined for it.

Lee358 06-24-2012 09:05 PM

When i get mine i wont run a front plate.

WolfsFang 06-24-2012 09:45 PM

Dammit looks like im not running a front plate tomorrow.

tjdiz92 06-24-2012 09:47 PM

Yep haha a front plate is not going on for me. I'll post my ticket on here when i get one

I'd get one of those sweet motorized retracting plates if I didn't live in Canada; I have a feeling the snow would deal to that pretty damn quick, especially on such a low car.

Not exactly. It's hard to detect, but your license plate numbers can be pulled up with your VIN, if they've already been issued. I got a parking citation/warning at a community I lived in several years ago, since I got warned for not having moved my car, and they even wrote the plate numbers on it.

Interesting, how long have you had your car/license assigned to you though?

I don't have my plates yet but when I get them I think I'll do what I did with my Mini Cooper... I just used rubber bands to hold it to my visor and put the visor down when I wanted to. Our law in Maine states that the plate must be ahead of the driver. Doesn't say it has to be on the front bumper.

A couple years ago there was a temporary detour from the highway to a secondary road and the local yokels were just nailing people left and right to boost revenue.

I got pulled over, I knew I wasn't speeding and we all had our seat belts on so as the cop was coming around the side of the vehicle I put down the visor. He asked why I was running without a front plate. I then pointed to my visor. :-)

He was a little dumbfounded that he hadn't seen it... hahaha.

Around three months, since I bought it in February 2007 and got the parking warning the weekend of the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight (May 5th, 2007) since I had gone with some friends to San Diego that weekend but hadn't moved my car in several days.

But had I been driving, it's not likely to have been a thing I'd have been pulled over for, but again they can look it up and give you another fix-it ticket.

Mmm, that's pretty annoying.
May have been that specific officer, regardless, this car is completely new, new model - maybe I'll be able to skate by longer!

I was under the impression that the longest you could go was 90 days or something like that, but technically you're supposed to put them on as soon as you get your plates, which overrides the 90 day period.

I vaguely remember calling parking enforcement, and the lady with whom I spoke was very polite but said that regardless of that time period, I'm required to run plates as soon as they arrive, and they were able to verify that my plates had been issued by the time of the citation/warning, as I mentioned earlier. I think I had registered the car with my parents' address in Ventura County and mentioned that perhaps the plates were in their possession (even though the plates were in my trunk), and she said that didn't matter.

My personal recommendation is to just put the plates on. I'd rather not have to deal with law enforcement, and it doesn't look as bad as people make it out to be. It looks worse when people put the plate on and connect it somewhere else with zip ties. Really, who cares about drilling holes in your bumper when it's not as if you're going to continuously put on and take off the plates? It's not like people are going to be driving around with the holes exposed. Just my two cents.

NY has similar laws, but a few people I know say that as long as you don't have anywhere to mount it, such as a bracket, then technically you don't need a front plate. Must of saw at least 50 cops so far and no one has pulled me over. NJ could be different in that regard though. I'd say leave it off till you get ticketed for it.

Bonburner 06-25-2012 03:06 PM

I'm planning on leaving it off until I either put in the clips into the plastic grill or I get a hold of the european thin plates for the front (I just like them aesthetically) - I really hate drilling the bumper - abhor it.

was385 06-25-2012 03:14 PM

I'm just running without one in CT. I think it's around a 30 dollar fine if you actually get ticketed, but that cop has to be having a really bad day. Passed dozens of cops and no one has ever turned an eye. Just driving down the road, probably 90% of nice cars don't have them.
