Clutch making a "Shh" noise?
So this only happens sometimes, but when it happens, it's pretty audible.
It usually doesn't happen unless I've been driving for awhile through the day. When I'm letting off the clutch shifting from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, or 4th to 5th, there clutch makes this pretty like 'SHHH' sound. It's most audible from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th. Strangely enough, if I let off the clutch a bit later and gas later making the car jerk a bit, there's no sound. The sound is also coming from the bottom, where the clutch would be. The car is at 50,000 miles. Any idea? My girlfriend said "OH, I've heard turbo cars make that sound" LOL. |
It thinks it's a BOV. It needs to go to therapy for identity crisis.
Not sure what to do about your clutch. |
Does there clutch feel different? Have you bled/replaced your clutch fluid lately? Have you checked your clutch master cylinder fluid lately? I know my cylinder made a similar noise when I was bleeding it during a flush.
Edit: damn autocorrect... |

I think you and I have the same issue...took me a few months to figure out. It's belt chirp! It comes from the accessory drive belt effectively slipping very slightly during rapid speed fluctuation, such as a shift. This is why is only happens during clutch release, and should happen more frequently if you shift quickly with increased overlap between clutching and shifting. It should also happen more easily with the A/C on due to higher accessory load. I am yet to prove this, was planning on swapping the accessory drive belt out to prove that it's gone when changed. However, it's not really a durability issue, and may be attributed to driving style. You're the first case aside myself that I've seen who has this. I used to tend to shift quickly- slowing it down will give a few microseconds more to the accessory drive to slow down, as well releasing the clutch a little more slowly and giving less throttle on next gear. Or just get a new belt.. |
front gear issue or clutch springs
idle with 0 speed the sound go out then press the clutch it will clear the sound release the clutch it haired again try to push the gear to 3ed without clutch just do it slowly it cleared the sound and that means front shaft gear issue or clutch springs |
The clutch is tired and you are being loud. Please be considerate when others are trying to sleep
|
I got the same issue as well and managed to replicate the sound by jamming the throttle in 2nd gear from a slow roll as well as the methods the OP mentioned. Gonna see what the dealer says about it when I get my oil changed.
Car is at 18k miles now... |
Could be the throw out bearing.
|
that sounds probable cause it fits the noise... i wonder if the dealer would replace it or is it considered a wear item too.

Oh, wait, you wouldn't happen to have a Borla EL header, would you?
|
@humfrz @Ultramaroon
The "shhh" sound is a little difficult to hear. I noticed it when I had the windows down, a/c and stereo off, and driving slowly through the neighborhood. I have not tried it while pressing the clutch, but I have tried braking in neutral and I don't hear the sound. Yes, this also happens while shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. I have not noticed it at other times. I have Openflash UEL header. I installed it a couple weeks ago and I don't remember hearing it before. I also recently replaced the wheel studs on all four wheels. |
Your clutch is about to go out. Not even kidding. This same thing happened to me. Dirt and grime are on your pressure plate and whenever you engage the clutch those fibers are grinding together and in turn ruining your clutch. The sound you are hearing are those fibers. It's essentially metal rubbing together making that "shhh" noise. Take it to a dealership ASAP.
My car had around 45000 miles on it when it happened to me. |

Set the parking brake, put the car in 2nd gear, rev the engine to about 3,000 rpm, let the clutch out slowly. If the engine dies, the clutch still has some life ......if the engine keeps running, your clutch and or pressure plate is shot. humfrz |
No video evidence?

I drove a friend's frs who had one of the early Borla EL headers. Something about it made a "shhhh" sound, almost like an aerated faucet running full blast. It was particular to that specific header so I'm thinking red herring at this point. |

Headers won't make sounds when braking.

To me, while driving, it sounds like the sound is coming from the back of the car. But my hearing is not great, so that may not be accurate. I am able to repeat it every time. It happens while coasting and the RPMs and going down and it occurs around 3400 RPM every time. I can make it happen in 2nd or 3rd. I have not tried other gears. It makes a "shh" sound or it sounds like I drove through a small puddle. It only lasts a fraction of a second but I hear it every time. It may be happening at other times but I have not really noticed it, except for a similar, possibly unrelated sound, when accelerating and shifting gears. I tried to get a video but there was too much road noise with the Go Pro on the side of the car. I also set the camera on the side of the road and did a couple drive-bys but I could not hear anything over the sound of the car and road noise. |

You may consider turning back to the OEM tune and see if it still does it ..... :iono: (however, be advised, that ol humfrz "lost" his tuning abilities, when they took away the distributor and carburetor(s) .... :() humfrz |
So an update to my situation. Within the past few months my clutch started making a creaking sound whenever I depressed it. Took it to the dealer today and was able to reproduce the "Shh" sound and the mechanic told me they are ordering a new tranny. Almost 23k miles on the ODO. Bone stock. Hooray for warranty.

prob trying to tell you to shut up
|
It's telling you to be quiet duh... Are you driving I the library again!?

I live my life a quarter mile at a time. Dem bookshelves are my hairpin corners

Update. Tranny replacement didn't do anything and the noise persists. Clutch squeak has gone away though.
After bringing it back to the dealer they tested it against new and other customer base for the last two weeks. They said it was a normal noise for this car and not an issue. Let's hope that's true... |
I have this same issue. Started cropping up a few days ago, especially right after start up. Honestly the best way I can describe it is the same way it was stated earlier, like a BOV. Sounds great, except I don't have a turbo so its concerning...
Anyone have any other updates on this? |
My brand new 2016 is doing this right off the lot. Is there any definite idea what it is?
