Scan Gauge

1 Attachment(s)
I finished setting up my new "Scan Gauge" today. Now reading RPM, Engine oil temp, Engine water temp, and Automatic tranny fluid temp. Not bad for 170 bucks. It just plugs into the ECU port and will read all sorts of stuff, plus engine codes.

Tromatic 07-24-2015 01:13 AM

Torque and a dongle will do all that and more. Carista will let you clear codes as well as change a few of the car options. I can see the usefulness of a stand-alone doodad but they need far more options to be worth it.

ETA: Did you catch the dude who drove a screw into the faceplate of the head unit? I had to google that. Is that screw stock?

Looks like a CD slot mount for a smart phone or GPS ...... it was "shaking" so he screwed it to the faceplate of his radio screen ....... :D

Scan Gauge will let you clear codes as well. I have one and used it to clear codes on my previous car and friend's cars (of course after reading to see what the problem was). I also use it to maximize mpg.

What X code did you input to get your transmission temperature?

I used the ones I found on line on the scan gauge website but get nothing.

The oil temperature X gauge works great.

Thanks

I've been using one for a couple years now, primarily for oil and coolant temps. Waiting for a specific car to become available, then the stereo makes way for a proper guage cluster.

I don't remember. I was on the phone with Scan Gauge for an hour plugging in different codes until we got one that worked.

Torque will let you clear codes, and it costs less than $30 with a bluetooth adapter. I have added a few more gauges since this pic was taken.:

It also has a page for emissions readiness for people in nanny states:

http://i315.photobucket.com/albums/l...lTimeInfo2.jpg

It can also log your speed and GPS location. You can customize the gauge layout and style. It also uses the phone's accelerometer to tell you how many Gs you're pulling. It can also track 0-60 times. It has gauges for horsepower and torque, but I have no idea how accurate the engine computer's measurement of that is. Plus, when you read codes with it, you can tap them to search on the internet for information about them right on your device's screen.

Plus it looks a helluva lot better. Did I mention it's less than $30?

Thats all fine and dandy if your smart enough to get it all running. Stuff like that is way beyond me.

All good if you don't mind using your phone. I'm just not the type that does. Plus, I've had my SG before that or even the Ultra Gauge came out.

You can get hp from the SG, although I won't trust it since it said my Yaris had over 200 hp. http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/images/smilies/rotfl.gif I wouldn't trust anything other than a dyno to show me hp.

I like that mounting point. Aeroforce actually has a scan gauge (Interceptor CNE) for the FRS/BRZ that has interchangeable faceplates that will match just about any FRS/BRZ interior.

I don't use my phone. When I switched carriers a while back and ended up with a new phone, I still had my old Galaxy Note. I set it up as a dedicated engine computer. Since it was a sunk cost on an item that had outlived its original purpose, it was essentially "free" for this purpose. It lives in the car all the time.

Even if you don't have an extra old phone to use, a used Note can be picked up for less than $100. Many of the Android tablets cost even less. So it still doesn't rise to the cost of a scan gauge to have a dedicated screen, even though it provides more features and more customization.

Really? It isn't that difficult.

I'm thinking about doing this with a cheap backup android phone that's sitting in my drawer. What are some good mounting points that allow you to hide the charging cable?

Also, this may be a noob question but is there any advantage to having an in line oil temp sensor connected to a dedicated gauge vs. displaying the OBDII reading?

I mounted mine to the little triangular window on the driver's side. That's a good location where it's quite visible without obstructing your view of anything else important.

Crap. I really need to vacuum.

For power, I used an add-a-circuit plugged into the seat heater circuit so that it would power off when the car is powered off. There are some other empty circuits in there that might work better, but I was lazy and didn't want to track down which ones weren't hot when the power was off when I knew the seat heaters would work.

http://i315.photobucket.com/albums/l...ra-dog/add.jpg

I can't get a pic of this without pulling the lower panel off my dash, but I cut the cigarette lighter plug off a dual USB car adapter, wired the adapter to the add-a-circuit and mounted it to the dash support under the steering wheel. Now I have two 2.1 amp 5V USB jacks under the dash (one of them is currently empty).

Then I simply plugged in a regular USB charging cable and ran it inside the dash over to the tablet. Thanks to shoddy workmanship, the trim panel on the end of the dash leaves a little gap that is just big enough to slip the cord through without having to cut anything. I have the cable turned slightly so that it folds itself up neatly between the door and dash without getting crimped when the door is closed.

http://i315.photobucket.com/albums/l...a-dog/hole.jpg

There's another similar gap between the door trim panel and the door right under the little triangular window. Eventually I'll run my cable through the boot into the door and through that little hole to dress the cable even better.

Not really, unless you're heavily modified or planning to race. The OBDII reading should give you the correct temp, assuming your oil temp sender is working properly.

However, what this car does NOT have is a real oil pressure sensor. The pressure switch on the front of the block is only an on/off switch for the idiot light on the dash that only trips when the pressure is almost at zero, so the computer never gets an actual oil pressure. That's the one major thing you can't display in Torque (or any OBDII reader). For that, you have to install an aftermarket oil pressure gauge with a separate sender.

Please check your x code for transmission temperature and write them down.

It will be greatly appreciated.

Max

Vracer111 07-24-2015 09:26 PM

Is the transmission temperature only able to be had for automatic transmission or would a manual transmission also have a sensor?

I very much like mine:

I now have a working oil pressure gauge. Now that the Scan Gauge is reading oil temp, I replaced that gauge with a oil pressure gauge. Now I just need to hook up my boost gauge. But 1st I have to get a turbo!

I have used three of them. This was the first:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-Bluetooth-diagnostics-Android/dp/B005NLQAHS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437881649"]BAFX Products - Bluetooth OBD2 scan tool[/ame]

That one is $24 and worked fine with a Galaxy Note and a Galaxy S4, but it's a little long and may stick down far enough to interfere with your leg while you drive. There are some shorter ones in the same price range.

I have also used the ScanTool OBDLink LX ($60) and the MX ($100), both of which I got on sale for much less than those prices during Black Friday and Christmas sales. The only real advantages are that they're shorter than the BAFX, and they have an auto-off feature to keep from draining your battery. But like I said, there are other short adapters that are much cheaper. And you don't really need the auto-off feature unless you have a charging issue or leave your car sitting for long periods of time. I just saw them at a big discount and grabbed them.
