Does the FRS need 87, 89, 91, or 93 gas?

Every one is saying you need premium gas for the FRS but which one is premium? The gas station I went to says that 89 is premium.. So is 91 and 93. So which one do you exactly fill up with?

weedtank 07-22-2015 03:18 PM

91 is minimum. You can put 93 in if your heart desires

CBR600RR 07-22-2015 03:19 PM

I use diesel.

steeloyangster 07-22-2015 03:21 PM

Really depends on where you live. I know that in higher elevation states 89 is the typical 'Premium' gas so you have no option there. The car can handle 91 octane just fine but just expect to be short of some power because the car will change ignition timing to account for less compress-able fuel. Myself personally I run 93 octane from BP which is also E10. She's running fine and I've never had the crickets in this gas (Probably just a correlation and not causation but wouldn't want to mess with a good thing) so I've never changed which gas station I go to unless it's on a long road trip. Even then I strive to find a BP with 93 octane. I'll grind my teeth when I have to fill up with 91 and/or 92.

Sorry OP but this has been covered a million times. 91 is minimum, if they have 92,93 or 94 that will work too. Read the book ;)

wbradley 07-22-2015 03:34 PM

I use Wesson

Edit- wrong thread, I thought this was what type of oil to use. Don't use Wesson!

I use naturally produced methane, man made.

Hello lupindub ....... :slap: ....... yep, it's a good idea to re-read the owners manual .......:)

I would suggest that you buy your gas from a popular, name brand, top-tier gas station and punch the button on the pump that is most expensive.

PS - NOT diesel ...... :D

Tromatic 07-22-2015 03:49 PM

It will run just fine on 89 as well.

you can also use windex

Tectoniic 07-22-2015 05:08 PM

Easiest way to put your pump gas worries to rest is to buy an OFT and tune for E85 :D

I've been running E85 for a couple of months and love it. Every time I take a road trip and have to switch back to 93 it bums me out. The added power of the E85 tune and JDL headers is addictive.

fridayfrs 07-22-2015 05:46 PM

I put 93 in mine since my choices are 87, 89 or 93. The book says 91 minimum. There is a loooong thread in this if you search.

91 or 93. 93 is best but 91 is ok. Anything below is bad or may lead to future issues. I put in 89 once (3/4 tank of it) because nothing over that was around for 40miles and car ran sluggish. Seemed like it really needed to try in order to maintain hwy speed. I quickly burnt that off and once I got to Chevron, put in 91. It ran sluggish(ly) up until the second time I pumped in 91.

Manual states premium only as so does the sticker on the cap or near it. Will help prevent knocking (and sometimes crickets).

Teseo 07-22-2015 05:58 PM

IIRC in gas door have a label wich oct rate need to be fill

dnieves 07-22-2015 06:23 PM

When in doubt: purchase the gas with the highest octane (aka the most expensive one).

PS (useless info) if you make the mistake of trying to fill up with diesel the nozzle won't fit.

:)

I dunno about everyone else but I use race gas.

Is that why I am hearing crickets from my engine bay?

GhostRai 07-22-2015 09:17 PM

Half 89 and half 93 to make it 91

Well we have a lot of it here so you will learn fast or get into a pile of unwarranted arguments.

Vracer111 07-22-2015 10:14 PM

100LL Avgas should work well as Subaru engines are used for airplanes and there's no crappy ethanol blended into aviation gas. Try it and let us know how it goes. Just a little more lead than auto fuel though...but that 108 AKI equivalent octane man...should be making boat loads of power with a tune!

Then it got freakn' confusing when you had to figure out if you needed leaded or unleaded for each car.

….. and then, back on the farm, we had "tractor gas" (no tax for farm use only) that would turn your car's carburetor red ...... and you would get reported and arrested ....... so, my father told me ….. to keep me and my car away from the tractor gas tank……….:confused0068:

Are we done with this thread, or are we going to play with it some more ..... ??

Any bio-diesel conversion for a twin yet...it's got direct injection...

chezplatypus 07-23-2015 10:20 AM

I wish there were 93 within 60 miles of me. :S

lupindub 07-23-2015 10:53 AM

OK, since were still beating this thread, I think I have a question that has not been answered yet. Why do gas attendants ask what grade gas I want when I go pre-pay for the gas? They ask me inside but I still have to physically press 87, 91, or 93. Seems kind of redundant. They ask if I want "regular or premium". If I say premium, how do they know which premium (91, 93)

That is not always the case, I used to own a diesel and I did come across a station or two that had the gas sized nozzle on the diesel pump.

HMMMMM that is a very good question! It isn't like they turn the pump on before you push the button and both 91 and 93 could be called "premium". I am going to ask them next time I prepay.

I've never been asked that here in my neck of the woods.

I actually asked the attendant yesterday but got a lack luster answer so i'm asking again here. According to her answer, it is to pre-set the pumps. That doesn't make any sense because they don't pre-set the pumps for people paying with cards so why would they do that for people paying with cash?

Yeah it just depends on where you live. Also some places like New Jersey have attendants who pump the gas for you.

Funny story when I went to visit Oregon for the first time. Pulled into the gas station and a rather large fellow came running my way. Me being paranoid of strangers, I proceeded to roll the window up and was going to leave.

Turns out he was an attendant. Never had the luxury of someone filling up my tank before that. :)
