So many upgrades dont know where to start

So im in a dilemma i went to drift con yesterday and a vendor was offering a deal for a set of avid.1 av20s for 550 but im not on coils yet or have anything done yet. So im not sure if i should just save up to get coils and deal with stock wheels in the mean time. So do i go suspension or exhaust or wheels or lip kit... ughh the stress is killing me lol :(

Drive and enjoy is obviously too complicated, I couldn't pull it off myself...

Where do you want to go with the car? If that's not clear, keep saving.

If it's clear, there is often a sequence that's relevant. If you need coils for clearance on the wheels you eventually want, then... save for good coils, LCA's, etc.

For example, I decided I wanted to be the only reason I was losing at AutoX, so I got everything all at once (except that in truth, I didn't.) That reminds me, I think I have to pay the mortgage...

Haha exactly I cant just drive the car way too many things to do. Well I want bc br coils i wanted to do that first but i came up on a deal so through me off and even if i get the rims they will just sit in the house for the time being because i wont be home for a few months ill be out at sea. :( so i was going to wait but in the mean time get a carbon fiber lip and do a tranny oil change because the shifting is clunky.

I'm in the same boat as you. there's so many things I want to do to my car yet I need to budget myself lol. I overspent a bit due to my excitement of getting the car, but only noticed it after I looked at my CC statements :(

just drive your car at a few events and every day to see what you think is most important to change out. the stock BRZ is pretty well sorted IMO.

At my last race weekend, there was a stock 2013 BRZ in the performance group.
I talked with him for a while.

He said that he is the fastest twin that he has seen at the numerous tracks he races recently.
In fact he said that at the last race TWO of the other twin drivers came up to him to get some tips and said "What in the hell have you done to this car to be so fast?!?".
Both of these other drivers had extensive mods to the engine and suspension, but could not keep up with this guy.

He told them "remove all of that crap from the car and learn to drive it FIRST!".

He was 100% stock (except for tires) and he was driving circles around the other guys.
The #1 most beneficial $$ you can spend on this car to go faster is seat time.
Quit trying to outhink the engineers and just drive the car.

#2 would be tires.
OP mentioning carbon fiber lip and lip kit means aesthetics is a priority.
Get wheels and good tires. Performance and aesthetics.

I'd visit the suspension forum before pulling any triggers.

I thought we were talking upgrades? :brokenheart: I guess I always think about performance, comfort, handling... those should do well enough for looks I would guess.

Shigeru Uehara would definitely agree with the above.

A nice exhaust setup, because racecar

What are you trying to accomplish with your upgrades?

If you're going to be a parking lot poseur, then I guess it makes no difference what order you go in. But if you have a specific objective in mind, then that will probably lead you logically to a particular path in building your car.

Now, that all having been said, if it were up to me, I'd go drive the damned thing the way it is. Have some fun. Take a week and drive some curvy two-lane roads. Pack a weekend bag, grab your significant other, and go somewhere but skip the interstates. Maybe even hit up a track, if you're so inclined. But spend your money on experiences, not stuff. You've got a great little car just as it is.

Well i came from a gti to this and i miss the boost and me personally it needs more power from low to mid range. So i will be saving up for that. But in the mean time i would like a more comfortable daily so coils would be nice but im toloerable. So far thats my goal. I will be taking drift classes in a few months but im still getting comfortable with the car.

I had a similar experience when I was younger and a better driver than what I have deteriorated into. My GTS-T was pretty much stock with simple upgrades that only accentuated the stock car; they didn't change the character as much as they optimized the original car and people always thought there was all sorts of crazy stuff under the skin. Nope, just a clean and tight stock Skyline running absolutely perfect with a guy behind the wheel who put in the seat time to optimize himself to the same level. I could put that car exactly where I wanted it, I made a pass through a hole shorter than the length of the car once by swinging the tail at some silly speed. After the fact I went "WTF did I just do?" but it was already done instinctively.

Years later, I drive a car that would carve circles around that old Skyline, but have maybe 10% of the skill that younger me had so the car is really bored with me. Modify your car as you wish and stay true to your vision for it, but for me, until something on this car demonstrates itself to stand in the way of getting something accomplished I'm not changing a damned thing. So far, it goes fast enough, handles and stops better than anything I've ever experienced and looks sexier than Eva Mendes covered in warm honey. We cool.

Don't fall into modding your car, its a very very slippery slope (spoken from experience here).

donoman 06-16-2015 09:07 AM

One mod alone will look strange... Once you lower you've got to get wheels. Once you get a lip you'd better be lowered. Once you ... Get the point

Best mods for me have been ride quality mods. Get the TRD strut brace and door stabilizers.

There are topics on this, and your proposed changes are likely not in this direction.

Research can occupy time and hold off purchase for a surprising amount of time. Plenty of info. Dig in.

Gunman 06-16-2015 11:52 AM

My advice would be to think about what you want in the end, come up with some sort of goal. Then research those things, and as you decide what you want, see how it fits with the rest of the plan. Buy as you can afford.

I see so many guys selling stuff, because their plan changed. Take advantage of this, and look for used parts, but keep your plan in mind, so you aren't the one losing money on parts.

And finally, build what YOU want. Listen to opinions, but don't do something to YOUR car, that someone else thinks you should do. If you want to cover it in pink fur with a unicorn horn on the hood, do it. Build it for you.

scottxnizzle 06-16-2015 12:15 PM

The order I did was :

Exhaust, Intake, Coils, Wheel Spacers, Wheels

lol hope that helps
