TO WINDEX OR NOT TO WINDEX?

ANy thoughts on what type of glass cleaner or techniques to use?

eriktherod 06-17-2012 07:48 PM

Stoner's Invisible Glass. It's tint-safe, has no blue dyes or streaking agents, and has a rain repellent. You can pick it up at Walmart for like $6-7.

andy19804 06-17-2012 08:48 PM

Thanks for the input. Went to autogeek and learned about non-ammonia cleaners. looks like the way to go.

jurjurson 06-20-2012 01:33 AM

Whats wrong with Windex bro? U hater?

86_ZN6 06-20-2012 02:00 AM

any glass cleaner and newspaper!

LivingLegend 06-20-2012 02:11 AM

I agree Newspaper works like a charm!

CU2MIKE 06-20-2012 02:13 AM

Stoner's, have two towels ready. One for the initial wipe down and the other for follow up to rid of any potential streaking.

911fanatic 08-16-2012 11:28 PM

The type of cleaner is less important than the technique. For non smokers, even clean water by itself will usually do the trick. As Mike noted above, two towels is the key to streakless windows. As soon as the first towel is even damp, switch to the second towel for buffing. A dry buffing towel is the key to streakless windows. Ammonia based cleaners can affect window tint, so alcohol based cleaners are a safer bet. Personally, i use two waffle weave towels as the weave pattern helps "scrub" the glass while the MF picks up a ton of cleaner easily.

I absolutely love Stoner's Invisible Glass.

Is ammonia free windex okay?

Is it clear? If it has dyes, I wouldn't, but that's just me. I've been very happy with Stoner's Invisible Glass (without rain repellent).

its what i have around the house,
time to invest in some stoners glass cleaner! if i already use rain-x, should i bother getting the rain repellent version?

gosaints420 08-17-2012 10:42 AM

A little soap and water in a spray bottle works great.

jarviz 08-17-2012 10:54 AM

I think I'll pick up a bottle of stoners later and give it a try.

I assume for the inside I can clean it any time, and it won't hurt the tint right?

As for the outside, when do you use it during a car wash... or do you just use car wash soap for the windows at that time?

Stu baru 08-17-2012 12:09 PM

Homebrew...1 cup distilled water, 1 cup rubbing alcohol, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.

I only like repellent on the windshield. Other glass surfaces aren't always as well wind-swept and the repellent can make things worse. So to be on the sae side, I use Rain-X on the windshield and regular Invisible Glass.

jadewbj 08-17-2012 01:29 PM

As long as it is ammonia free you are cool. I use 20/20 glass cleaner.

RRnold 08-17-2012 01:30 PM

As long as it's not tinted you should be ok but I use Toyota foam.

Wouldn't the use of newspaper just leave black ink residue all over the place?

You follow it with a clean cloth or paper towel. The point of the newspaper is that the paper and ink act like a very fine abrasive that gets the glass exceptionally clean.

Yup!! Been using newspaper for years

SEC 08-18-2012 03:01 PM

An alternative is to buy a pad of newsprint paper from an art materials store. its the same stock, but you don't get the ink on your hands.

Just use your car wash microfibre towel... Oh, and I do use Windex. What's so bad about the ammonia anyways? Spray it on, wipe it off... Looks brand new!

Nothing inherently wrong with an ammonia based window cleaner on the outside of the windows or on the inside if the windows aren't tinted. Bad for tinted window film though.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the "ghosting" left by the dealer writing on the windshield. Its hard to describe, but whenever my windshield gets wet, in the corner there's an outline of a 4 digit number (likely shippers/dealers code of some flavor) but the water displaces from there first, leaving a "dry" spot in the shape of the numbers.

Ideas?

What have you tried? Denatured alc, clay bar, or even dish soap would all be good places to start.

CircuitJerk 09-12-2012 07:16 PM

I think the window markers are wax based?

The owners manual states not to use glass cleaner at all on the back window to avoid potential damage to the defroster grid.
I've always used the Stoners and haven't had a problem but it makes me wonder if that's just a blanket suggestion for the masses to avoid any potential warranty issues. Or are they using something new that is less resistant?
I've used standard glass cleaners with ammonia before Stoners or non ammoniated cleaners were around on rear glass that had the defrosting element.

I don't really see it as a huge problem unless you scrub it unnecessarily hard and wipe it everyday or so...:iono:

Take any brand polish by hand with a towel and polish it off. If you wanna get all crazy with it find a cerium based glass polish, like carpro ceriglass.

Get a window cleaner and spray a shit ton on it and then take a NEW razrblade to it. Make sure the razer blade is about a 45 degree angel and move from top to bottom, not side to side. Thats a way for us AZ people to get our windows back to normal from the acidity of the rain when we do get rain.

Guff 09-18-2012 02:54 AM

I always just use an Ammonia free cleaner, spray it onto a MF towel, wipe and clean glass, then finish it off with a dry towel.

I use... THE WORLD'S BEST GLASS CLEANER!!!!111... but seriously, no streaks using a single MF towel. There's just something about the way it dries. You just have to make sure not to apply too much foam.

David-Fermani.com 09-20-2012 01:13 PM

Looks like everyone is focused more on glass cleaning products rather then process? You could use the "best", most popular product, but totally screw up your windows if you don't know what you're doing and what to look for. Anyone know how to clean your windows properly?

AMMONIA ? SCHAMMONIA !

There is NO ammonia in windex ! :mad0259:

It is ammonia D - Not chemically related to ammonia.

Ammonia D is only a dessicant for streak free cleaning and quick evaporation .

Love this can because the car pictured is a MK1 MR2 :happyanim:

Buuuut I still use Stoner's glass cleaner.

Invisible Glass is the best. Use newspaper. My windows are to tinted, I've never had a problem with any car. Don't use the one with the rain repellant on the inside windows though.

Definitely agree. I always use Invisible Glass and my windows always come out spot free!
