Joying Android 4.4.4 Kitkat Toyota Head Unit
http://www.carjoying.com/media/catal...reo_toyota.png
I'm not sure if anyone has already covered this model on the forum but I ordered one of these units to give it a go. I was going to do a tablet install but decided to try this instead. The main things that it appealed were the fact it was running Kitkat, it has a cd/dvd slot, fits the bay without gaps for the OEM look & physical buttons (with selectable illumination colour). It arrived today so I'm gonna install it in the next day or two and feed back my impressions to anyone that might be interested. If you've any questions or want me to test anything out let me know! http://www.carjoying.com/quad-core-a...vr-steeri.html [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4OJP45aOu0"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4OJP45aOu0[/ame] |
The one I bought is close to that, but not identical: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80493
It's probably in the same family as the ones covered here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2660662 |
Very nice looking unit, I bookmarked it for a future upgrade
|
When you get it installed try something like bluetooth tethering with your phone see if thats possible on this. I was considering an android powered head unit but I use Google Play Music (the subscribed streaming part) and would love to have control over that on the head unit (Verizon Unlimited Data ;D )
Its either something like this if it works or I find a Head Unit with Android Auto. Would much rather have this and run Torque or Dash Command on it. |
Hm, I may need to check this out for the price. I was excited to have the fancy head unit in my 10 series when I got it but it is absolutely horrible.
|
The android unit I bought from Eonon.com (GA5167, pictured above) is 90% plug n play and fits perfectly in the dash. It supports Bluetooth connection to phone/obd2, WiFi support, and torque works. Root and custom Roms/tweaks are available. I spent about $350 on the unit and would buy it again. There's a ton more info on these units in that XDA thread I linked above.
|
That is pretty cool... So what happens if you want to use the in car speaker for hands free and not the one that comes with the head unit? will it interface with the OEM mic?
|
No, you need to rig that yourself. That's the one thing I am missing after going aftermarket. Usb plug and aux jack in dash are still functional, however.
|
Really interested in this unit also, can the beep sound when you press a button be disabled in the settings menu? How is the build quality?
Thanks! |

I have this same model (sold under Joyous)
::edit Apparently Joyous is the manufacturer, Joying is a reseller but they are identical http://www.dxsoul.com/product/joyous...0#.VZs1G_lVhBc I've used dealextreme in the past so I was happy to find it for only 300 with free shipping. Order took about a week to process, and it was shipped DHL express once it hit the states. Total time in transit was only 2 business days. You can also plug your android/apple phone in and do screen mirroring. There is a dedicated USB plug for that, worked with my Note Edge perfect. Plugs right into factory harness, requires re-pinning a connector to have the factory amp power on (without this step, the door woofers will not be active and sound will be poor and tinny). Instructions for re-pin: Pins 8 and 9 are for the antenna amp and factory amp, respectively. Pin 9 is needed (and present in the OEM harness) while pin 8 is not required (no wire on factory harness). The harness adapter has pin 8 populated with the antenna amp wire, but pin 9 is blank. Your goal is to steal pin 8 and crimp/solder it up to the amp power wire (Fused, orange w/blk stripe) and put it in pin position 9. You can cut/tape the antenna wire from pin 8, it is not needed. All work is done on the supplied adapter harness, so you are not modifying the factory harness at all. Antenna requires an adapter which is available from Metra, I did not find the exact adapter yet as I do not use the radio at all |

Did you have to modify the mount plate on the OEM bracket to fit the Joying/joyous unit/ I got my unit a few days ago . There were 2 position dimple on the plate that i had to drill out, because no position hole was on the aftermarket HU. Also i had do shave off the mounting hole on the bracket by around 2 to 3 mm. In order for the Bezel to close flush when the HU was installed. The head unit was sitting too forward, pushing front bezel out, and the lock on the back of the bezel not lock on. The HU Bezel has a gap higher than the passanger side. So by shaving the hole a bit toward the back, the bezel now sit flush. I will post picture later |

Thx for the guide for the repin for the front door speaker. I have the OEM Kicker sub, was worrying if the sub harness change some configuration. But after re pin it work out pretty well. no problem at all. BTY did you get the OBD2 BT reader with your headunit? Thx |
Pics installed? Considering this as an upgrade

Just did the basic install for to test out FM, GPS, to check if they work or not. Haven't go the time to install the reverse camera yet. Going to route the Mic to the OEM mike location. Purchased this to Retain OEM USB harness to USB connection on the aftermarket HU. Not going to bother with the OEM 3.5mm Jack, will never use it anyways. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/USB-c...1_5_4,201409_2 DJcarbine. I got the OBD2 form Joying, It pair and connects to the headunit and Torque app. But it doesn't show any real time data after. And it throws a lot of U0073 code when it is communicating with the cars ECU and sifting through AUTO detect mode to find a Protocol that would work. Not sure if adaptor problem, so i got a couple more to try it out. Jason |
I wonder if this will work with OEMAudio+ setup.
|
Sorry i got a little held up, havnet got the time to take the pictures yet.

If the harness config for OEM Audio is the the same as OEM , i dont see why now. Right now my connection is like this. OEM harness - kicker sub harness (plug & play) - Joying harness (Plug & play) Just need to repin the connect on #9. - Android head unit. |
Looks pretty good!
|
Anyone noticing the resolution on this thing is.. strange? I find a lot of the apps don't seem to fit correctly.
It's almost as if the sight impaired mode is on. |

The harness is a standard toyota harness, basically just get a radio harness made for the FRS, and wire it into the android HU harness like any other install. Plug and play |
3 Attachment(s)
I installed one of these last weekend and so far I like it a lot. Shipping was fast and install was pretty simple. I had to grind the nipples off the original brackets and move the amp wire from pin 8 to 9. If you have a BRZ, you need to connect both pins. The unit comes with the Toyota harness for power, speakers, .... But you will need the antenna adapter cable (Metra 40-LX11) and USB adapter cable(Metra AX-TOYUSB).
|
How does everyone like the unit? I've found it on amazon. Is it really worth it?
|
Would like to know as well, I'm debating between this and ca-fi but i heard new cafi doesn't support obd2

I replaced my Kenwood DNN770HD with this joying and I would not go back. I don't think you will be disappointed.
|
I would definitely recommend not getting a CaFi and buy one of the units in this family (Joyous, Eonon, HuiFei, etc). Plenty of support out there on xda along with custom ROMs. I've had my Eonon for 2 years now and still 100% happy with it.
The Eonon GA5167, which is a plug-n-play unit, fits perfectly into my BRZ Limited dash. Currently on sale for $299. http://www.eonon.com/Car-DVD-Players...ta/GA5167.html |

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Pure-Android-...IAAOSw9mFWIwmR I'm pushing for a quad core unit and under $300. |
Quote:
http://m.eonon.com/productShow.aspx?pno=GA2114 It's the same company that sells the unit I have, Eonon. They are all basically the same on the inside as far as functionality. Just find one that has an interface/layout that you like. That looks like a double din so you will need a kit to install it.. It will not fit exactly like the OEM unit does like my Eonon unit ga5167. The unit is definitely rootable and there are modded roms available. Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2660662 Make sure anything you do is specifically for the RK3188 quad core chip. |

Could you go into a little more detail about needing both pins for the BRZ? Does that mean you're swapping pin position 8 and 9 with their corresponding wires or soldering both 8 and 9 wires to pin position 9? Thanks |
You basically need to repin one wire iirc because the pin isn't in the correct location for your antenna preamp which would result in no radio reception.
Repinning ia very easy to do with a pin or tiny flat head screwdriver |
From what I read, the BRZ uses both (pin 8 for FM amplifier and pin 9 for AMP in trunk). The FRS only uses pin 9. The harness does not come with anything in pin 9 so you would have to make some kind of jumper.
|
The pinouts of the unit and FRS/BRZ are documented. Before installing mine I made sure that everything lined up as it should and I did have to move a wire to power on the antenna.. I believe I connected the antenna amp wire to the speaker amplifier trigger wire coming out of the radio.
|
Thanks for your helps guys. The antenna for the BRZ is already powered through PIN 8, all I needed to do was follow DJCarbine's instructions for connecting the amp wire to PIN 9 and I was done.
I also had to elongate the holes of the metal brackets since the plastic bezel wasn't fitting on after the install. Kind of what everyone else was saying, the unit protrudes a bit much if you don't do that. This might be a dumb question, but is there a way for this head unit to have HD Radio? |
Can someone take a picture of what's hidden behind the SD card flap? Why does that flap say GPS on it? I neeeeeed to know.
|
Is the boot up time still ~30 seconds? It'd be nice if there was true sleep mode that would boot up in a few seconds.
|
Quote:
There is a partial sleep mode. When I get gas it usually turns back on immediately after I turn my car back on and doesn't need to boot. I think with the custom roms you flash this can be configured. I'm thinking the default is 3-5 minutes before it truly powers down. |
