Just came back from the Toyota Dealership LOL

so I went to Subaru with my fiancee then went to Toyota. we went to check out the interiors.

Salesmen named Carlos comes up to us while we are sitting in the car and he asks if I'm Peter Lau. I said no, he said oh I'm just waiting for a Peter Lau. I'm like .....
anyway we get out of the car and I ask if I can take one out for a test drive. he said normally we don't let people test drive these but if you're nice and know something about the car I might.

I'm like ok..... well this has the TRD exhaust which is expensive compared to what you can get, it has the trd wheels as well. then he pops the hood and I point things out to him like oh this is the sound tube and here's the intake, but there's after market ones that are good like mishimoto or grimmspeed etc.

then he asks me what the difference is between the brz and frs (I told him I am deciding between the 2) and I said the front end, and the suspension was different but the 2015 is the same. then he tells me the FRS is an inch lower. I say yes it is if you put the trd springs on. he says nope and we argue back and forth then I'm just like whatever.

then he tells me that in the states, the frs is badged as a Toyota and not scion. LOLOL. I say no it's not, it's a scion in North America and a GT86 in like Europe and Australia, etc. he says no, it's a Toyota in the states. then I tell him I'll bet any money that it's a scion. then my fiancée tells him I know people in the states with frs' and he shuts up.

finally I ask him, do I know enough now that I can take one out for a test drive. he responds with a "no" then laughs. LOL.

then he told me to come back on Saturday so he can take me on a ride.....

edit: OH YEAH. he told me that forced induction, if installed by a professional, is covered under warranty! LOL

Tcoat 04-27-2015 08:44 PM

The TRD exhaust can be very cheap if it is already on the car. They can't deal on price but the add ons can really make a difference in what you can bargain on if you actually want what is already installed. I paid $180 (dealer cost for the parts) for the TRD exhaust that was on mine and am very happy with it.
I a, actually pretty surprised there are still sales guys that don't have the proper info on these cars since they have been around for a while.

yeah. I was more surprised that he was arguing with me. where do they get this stuff?!
I was pissed that he said no after I gave him a lesson on the car

swarb 04-27-2015 08:51 PM

^car salesman are used to playing games. I would complain to the sales manager or look for another salesman. If he wasn't busy waiting for Peter Lau, you would have been given a test drive. Don't wait until Saturday.

Tcoat 04-27-2015 08:59 PM

The sales person that sold me mine told me right up front that she nothing about the car. Her short skirt and tight sweater may have not gone over so well with your girl friend there though.
She couldn't get me into one for a test drive fast enough and almost dragged me across the lot to a recently traded in one. Had no gas in it so our first stop was the gas station where she immediately started to put regular into it. We then hit the country roads for about 45 minutes and I knew I was losing bargaining power by the second as she watched the smile on my face grow while I drove.

he assumed I was Peter cause I'm asian lol. then he was telling me how Peter Lau is like the leader of some frs facebook group, etc. and basically treating him like he's some big shot frs guy. it's just a Facebook group lol.

my fiancee points out hot girls to me all the time lol. but like really? I can't test drive a car under $30 000? that truck next to it is like twice the price

soulreapersteve 04-27-2015 09:28 PM

This story made my day XD

Perhaps I should look around for dealerships that has salespeople who own or at least know more than just the brochure about the Twins. Strike up a relationship and maybe get some discounts when it's time to buy.

Side note: Holy crap, this car is already breaking me out of my hermit status, and I don't even have it yet! I normally avoid people unless it's a necessity.

Kelbyat07 04-27-2015 09:35 PM

Lol that sucks I feel bad for you for experiencing such bad service. The car salesman that I talked to let me test drive the car at 17. Usually they won't let anyone drive unless they are 21 or have their parents with.

it was fun arguing with him and putting him in his place to make him stupid.

If that was me I wouldn't want him as my salesman. I had a sales dude who was rude to me so I bought my FRS through another sales rep. When I walked into the showroom to pick up my car I just gave the dude a big fat smirk cause he lost a sale from me. You wanna go to a salesperson who knows their stuff and then some. just my 2 cents! ;)

underpay mechanics pouring fluids who hell know

humfrz 04-27-2015 11:29 PM

When I bought my FR-S, the salesman admitted that he knew nothing about the car. I said that was OK, we got along fine.

I said all he needed to know was where the keys were .....:D

Since I was over 70, before a test drive, the dealership did make me show a copy of my recent electrocardiogram ........

There are car salesmen, and then there are car guys... never the twain shall meet.

And anyone interested in buying a car (spending thousands of dollars), should have done their research enough to outsmart the poor car salesman. I learned enough, just from this forum, to teach my dealer a thing or two about the FRS he sold us.

Tromatic 04-28-2015 12:50 AM

"edit: OH YEAH. he told me that forced induction, if installed by a professional, is covered under warranty! LOL"

How odd, my dealer said the exact same thing. "Professional" being the dealer where I bought the car. Does that need a "LOL"?

The salesman sounds like he was not liking the fact that he was being one-upped. It was pretentious of him to tell you that he'd let you test drive only if you "educate" him on the car.

Unfortunately, it's the other way around for me sometimes. I have customers that come in, displaying arrogance and lack of respect. Recently, I asked one of them a simple, "Do you know the Scion process?" and they gave a, "Like I care" body language with their "no." They weren't even my direct customers. I just was providing help to one of my newer fellow sales consultants because I'm the designated Scion Ambassador. So, I tried to give a very brief explanation of Pure Pricing (which he gave me with a "we'll see about that" look) and how most of our FR-S is at a port, ready to be shipped up, because of the fact that we personalize them to the customer's preference before fully bringing them up here. Because all our FR-S that WAS on the ground sold out January-February faster than what the manufacturer could produce, we had none left on the lot, which I also tried to explain to him, but he kept cutting me off, practically blowing off everything I said as if I'm lying. His "tough guy" attitude started to crumble the moment he learned I owned a RS1.0. (I was so tempted to tell him I would let him try mine out, but with his current personality, I wouldn't trust him with any of our vehicles.) So, in those few minutes of him being an arrogant, difficult, customer, when all I was trying to tell him is he could either just wait and hope for the next unreserved FR-S to show up or he could place a refundable deposit, I just practically told him to go to scion.com to learn the Scion process and that my fellow sales consultant will just take his name and number so she could inform him when one was on the lot. Apparently, after I had walked away, when she asked nicely for the information, he tried to be a chauvinistic prick by responding, "Whoa, whoa. Don't you think you're going too fast?" After all that foray, I told her that if the FR-S does arrive and he wants a test drive, either let me go with him or if she does, kick him out if he tries to drive it like he stole it. (Yes, I know some of you feel that you should be entitled to test drive the car to its maximum potential, but look at it this way; If you're trying to sell your car, would you let the potential buy it drive it hard with the potential that they'd just walk away after their moment of joyriding? Wouldn't you think it's fair that until the vehicle is liable under their name, they shouldn't drive it hard?)

The sales person could be the biggest expert on the cars there ever was and many would still come on here and say they were dumb as a stump just because they don't agree. A lot of what get's presented as "fact" here is in reality opinion and since it is very subjective is open for debate.
Hell, I am shocked when we get 4 people on this forum that agree on some of the more contentious subjects.
If I walked into a dealership and the salesman started telling me how the car is slower than minivans, has this crippling torque dip and is just too noisy to drive for any long period I would be pulling up a chair and the guy better have a free calendar because we are going to be there a while. On the other hand there are many people here that would now think he was the best informed and correct sales guy in the history of sales guys.
Like Phantom said, not all costumers are wonderful either and if the attitudes that come across on this forum are present when they are buying then the sales person is doomed from the start no matter how much he/she knows. Same old song and dance that we only hear one side of the story on here (not talking about you there Att) and it is easy to take the side of the guy telling it since we only have their version to run with.
I doubt that I would last 5 minutes in the job if I had to deal with some of the people in here when they were looking at a car.

extrashaky 04-28-2015 09:14 AM

Personally, I wouldn't have played 20 questions to get a test drive. My response would have been, "I hope you're kidding." It's up to the salesman to convince me I should be in that car, not for me to convince him. If a salesman had pulled that on me, I would have told him to fuck right off and and asked for the sales manager just to speak with him just long enough to tell him why I was headed to another dealership.

Shedd22 04-28-2015 09:43 AM

My salesman knew nothing about the car either. I bought mine in May 2014. Do dealers find their sales crew from a list of high school dropouts? Pretty sure my salesman couldn't point out the sound tube if I gave him 3 tries.

If I were a car salesman, I'd do everything I could to learn about the cars I could potentially be selling...or ya know atleast be interested in cars.

tennisfreak 04-28-2015 09:50 AM

If the salesman is clearly and idiot I have no problems going to the next one on duty.

Done it before, really pissed the guy off. He was not exactly and idiot just a ahole and I told him he had a bad attitude.

Yes, readily admitting you have no idea about the car you are selling and being a jerk about it are two totally different scenarios.
On another thread a while back somebody made the very enlightened statement that a good salesman will ask you about the product and then let your excitement sell yourself. The whole "bullshit baffles brains" scenario does not work when the customer knows more about the product than the salesperson does.

You have a lot more patience than I.. When I was deciding on if I was gonna buy an FRS or not I went down to an Autonation Toyota dealership that was a few blocks away from me and asked them if I could take one for a test drive. Without hesitation they said sure! Mind you I am only 23 and usually look like i'm 18.. But regardless they were really nice about the whole thing. I was actually teaching the sales lady about the car on the test drive lol I kind of felt bad because I didnt end up buying a car from them because all they had were brand new ones. I ended up going with a used one across the state but sometimes I wish I would have bought that brand new ultra marine.. Anyways moral of the story is that whatever dealership you went to are a bunch of twats. Even if you look young they shouldnt judge a person by there age..

Sorry for the guys that have heard this story several times before:

I had the reverse age discrimination thing happen. I went in planning on looking at the Tc and spotted my FRS on the showroom floor. I spent over 1/2 an hour crawling in, under (the little bit I could fit), and around the car. I even opened the hood and touched every exposed part I could. A couple of salesmen stood a few yards away and watched me but never once even paused in their chat nor approached me. Eventually I got tired of waiting for what I thought would be the inevitable "can I help you sir" and went over and asked "does nobody here want to sell me a car?". They looked shock and responded "Oh we have so many people look at it but never buy we figured you were just curious". They did not say it outright but what was implied and what I heard in my head was "we have so many old guys...". I just nodded and walked over to the lady that had just wrapped up with another customer and said "would you like to sell a car". Her response was "I certainly would" and off we went.
So moral of the story is that when it comes to these cars us older guys get judged just as bad as the young ones.

Only thing i guess you could really say is that i would be taking it out for a joy ride. But i can't even say that since i am actually going to buy a car. Geuss i'm going with Subaru lol

Nah it really wasn't as yours story is pretty straight forward. You can also try a different sales person. Just because at the same dealer doesn't make them all bad.

I had a good sales person. Went to Scion and he was like "man you should take it for a spin, you'll love this car" and even in the test drive he took me on some curvy roads in Mississauga and let me just floor it.

You know what, because of him, I was sold on the car. I praised him for not being a boring old sales person...
