Firestorm/Lightning red spray can
had to find a spray can that matched our red to paint my TRD spoiler. Couldn't find C7P and I found the best one was Chrysler Flash Red that worked the best.
15$ for paint and sand paper. I feel pretty good saving 300 bucks  Now i need to decide if i want to use double sided tape or drill it and screw it in. http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/...590a9f5fd1.jpg[/URL]http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/...07083D095A.jpghttp://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/...2AA6568F5E.jpghttp://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/...9867E04BAB.jpg |
Well, it looks like a $15 job if that's what you were going for.
|
Looks pretty good considering. A little flat but hey for 15 bucks not bad.
If you have one of the sherwin williams auto paint places they can paint match spray cans for around that 15/can if I remember correctly. they've done a pretty good job for me in the past, paint looks half decent and can look metallic too haha I did this car quickly with their paint! (crappy clear and large surfaces though). Hood, front bumper, skirts, spats. Naturally the hood looks flat and the skirts aren't perfect but considering how cheap everything was I was happy (car was 3k lol) http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...S/IMGP5878.jpg |

He said its a TRD spoiler!

So you can afford a $30k car, but can't afford proper paint for a major exterior piece?
It's obviously a different shade in pictures, I can only imagine how off it looks in real life. :sigh: |
Its not that bad TBH.
I personally would have put a clear coat on it though. |

But yea if you wanted to do it right should have gone with the paint much stuff and some clear! a little sanding and that can look pretty close to real paint for awhile until you can get some moneys for the real deal. All about that prep! This guy sprayed this bike with rattle can and clear, finished off with wetsanding and the like, has lasted him several years and what looks to be very well done work. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/...27f4f9_b_d.jpg |
I used this place before. It's a single stage but they do have a clear coat also. For $20 it's worth it and it's exact color match.

if you ever decide to have that painted for real, that all has to be stripped off. figure adding 2 more hours of labor to get it back to a usable surface.
|
I've painted pieces for my car before and because it's the dark blue with flake, I had to get it custom mixed. Luckily I live near an auto paint store and they can not only mix the paint but put it in spray cans for me.
I used a 2 stage paint, 1 can for the base color and 1 can for the clear coat. The result is perfect to say the least and I'm happy I went that way. There is the cheaper 1 stage option with the base and clear but it doesn't last as long and doesn't "pop" as much. Look up automotive paint in your area, there's sure to be a store like that, particularly in an industrial area with a lot of shops nearby. This is where I go for reference: Space Age Paint -RyanG |
you didnt even try http://www.automotivetouchup.com/tou...ion/2013/fr-s/ ?
|
hit it with a coat of clear, wetsand, repeat a few times and you'll be much happier with the result.

To be fair, I'm sure it's a knockoff spoiler. No one in their right mind would ruin an oem piece like that. |
yup, its a knock off. I'll put up photo's once the clear coat has been put on. Thanks for the constructive criticism, I kinda lied to myself thinking that it was all right. Once its more than 20C I can do another try.
I guess i might have to break that 15$ budget |
Finally finished. Re sanded everything with 5 coats each.

Edit: nvm http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...poiler&_sop=15 |
No one has mentioned how they were trying to charge him $300 to paint a fucking spoiler. My place wanted $150 and I felt that was too much so I just bought a carbon fiber one. And I feel like you could find it cheaper than $150 even. Buy I'm in Texas.

Who says I can't afford a paint job? When you have time and skill? |

looking much better the 2nd time!
|
Honestly i didn't think it looked all that bad to begin with. It looked a little flat but considering price and circumstances that's not too bad. Second time looks way better!
|
Not bad for the second attempt! Buying authentic parts and getting it installed/painted professionally is not cheap so with me being a cheap bastard and hands-on, I dig the creative/DIY/outside-the-box thinking!
I was thinking about taking the same path as you when I was brainstorming ideas on how to get a cheap trd rear lip frm eBay. My other idea was to learn how to vinyl wrap it gloss black or fake cf. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk |
Vinyl wrap is probably the easiest and most economical route of you just want to make it black. For paint, sanding and prepping and re doing it a few times might have taken over 12 hours in total. Not to mention my garage is totally dusted in red and it hasn't totally dried yet.
Only if I could have found a matching firestorm red vinyl. It would have only taken 30 minutes. |
