How often can I reach red line ?

How often do you reach red line ?

humfrz 04-20-2015 10:55 AM

When I go into racecar mode.

AKA stoplight racing mini van :)

Andrew025 04-20-2015 11:08 AM

Every day I drive it...

WhiteFRS69 04-20-2015 11:09 AM

until it goes BOOM!
and you start to slow down, and there is smoke and oil everywhere.....

WNDSRFR 04-20-2015 11:16 AM

Red line?
Hell, I've reached the rev limiter many times. I don't think it's possible to over rev the engine.

awhatzable 04-20-2015 11:36 AM

So it safe to red line from 1st,2nd,3rd or 4th gear once everyday ?

df.dima 04-20-2015 11:41 AM

I don't always reach the red line, but when I do, crickets come out of the tail pipe!

Its up to you, its your car after all. High loads are not easy on the engine, but it can take some abuse. How many times a day no one knows and no one can tell you exactly, as some engines go pop, some engines keep going.

With how slow this car is, sometimes its a required thing to make that needle hit over 7000 to pass that Honda Odyssey!

Sideways&Smiling 04-20-2015 11:42 AM

6.66 times a day.

G-awesome 04-20-2015 11:45 AM

when I feel like it!

Lorico 04-20-2015 11:47 AM

I tend to baby all my cars. The only time I come close to red line is when I take an on ramp and I need to reach high way speeds. Other than that there's really no need. But I do take corners pretty hard.

Synack 04-20-2015 11:48 AM

Redline it as much as you want. Just don't do it like 50 times a day. I probably do it 20 times.

tato.valverde 04-20-2015 11:48 AM

The rev limiter is there for a reason. It's a safety measure. If it wasn't completely safe to go to 7400rpm, they would have set the rev limiter lower ;) So redline that shit!

Thenk again, check your car is running at normal temperatures and check you have oil

wbradley 04-20-2015 11:58 AM

You can hit red line any time you open the throttle enough to do so.

The correct answer.

billwot 04-20-2015 12:22 PM

You should redline it at least once each day, to verify that your limiter is working properly!

ls1ac 04-20-2015 01:02 PM

I thought the rev limiter was used as an audible shift indicator. It works for me. Just kidding, the red line is the safe limit, use it.

Teseo 04-20-2015 01:19 PM

We tuned the car to preserve the engine and increase longevity. Use the redline when you feel
its necessary for win. Good luck

Ultramaroon 04-20-2015 01:32 PM

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet: Only after the engine has reached full operating temperature.

Not the water temp, the OIL. Give it a good 15-20 minutes before dropping the hammer.

I think the red line counter is limited to 99. After that the computer will put the car into limp mode until you take it in for inspection and service. The inspection costs $400 at Subaru. I don't know what the Toyota dealers charge.

There's an easy way to check your RL counter to see how many you have left. There are three buttons on the dash for odometer and such. Put the car into accessory mode and punch the following sequence as fast as you can: top-middle-middle-top-bottom-top-middle-top-top-top, then pump the hand brake three times. The check engine light will begin flashing yellow, and the RL count will display on the dash in place of the odometer.

You have to get the timing just right to make it happen. It may take you several attempts.

continuecrushing 04-20-2015 02:00 PM

I set my idle to be at redline

If anything comes up, I'll be able to say "The engine blew up at idle, I dont know what happened?!"

If that were true no car would survive more than a few track days where you spend nearly 20 minutes straight above 5k rpm and you're >7k rpm around 10 instances per lap (at my local) or ~100 times in that 20 minute session.

And it's typical to do that 5x in a track day... I've been above 7k rpm >500x in a single day. My car is at 37k miles with the only issue being a coil pack that needed replacing.

If this engine can't handle that long term expect this car to get dropped by thousands of people.

Tromatic 04-20-2015 06:35 PM

I was told that my typical fourth-gear highway driving (uphill most of the way, full of dumbasses) would blow my engine up.

In my car it averages less than 10 minutes for the oil to warm up when driving slowly (less than 1/3 throttle application).

The limit is 14 times per day. After that your warranty is voided.

Tromatic 04-20-2015 08:25 PM

I took the faceplate off, used a black sharpie and covered the red stuff. Instant nine grand redline!

I just broke the faceplate with a hammer. The car does suck after all, why take care of it.

If your temps are up to operating temps. Not just coolant gauge on dash but oil. And such.

Somewhere I read @CSG Mike say the oil temp lagged several minutes behind the water temp as the engine warmed up. Is that your experience?

Allow myself to quote.... myself.

Adding to above points...

I have the Pivot Dual Gauge (review link), and having driven it for a few days in Southern California weather I can safely say the following:

- Ambient starting temps are around 25-30C for both fluids. Car is garaged and ambient air temps are around 55-60F.
- 30 second warmup + ~90 seconds of < 3000 RPM driving gets the needle to the first mark on dash temp gauge. At this point the Pivot gauge reads 60C water temp and around 50C oil temp.
- A total of around 4 minutes is needed for easy driving to get the thermostat to open up around ~70C. The oil temp stays around 60-65C
- Largest delta between coolant and oil temps was around 20 degrees, when the coolant hits 80 but oil temp still is barely 60-ish

Results may vary, but it's safe to say that with easy driving + 30 second warmup, you're looking at roughly 5 seconds for each degree centigrade increase in oil temp from a completely cold engine. Coolant may take longer to warm up if you have the AC on.

Carista shows about five minutes to "normal" operating temps as well.
