Bought a 2015 after only 4000 miles had the cam gear codes. They fixed it test drove it threw more codes replaced ECU told me it was ready, warmed it up threw more codes before even leaving parking lot. They have had my car for three weeks now. Sounds to me these cars can be very problematic. Bought it for reliability and gas milage since I thought a Toyoto with a Subaru motor would be both. Now I have a chance to lemon law it. Should I ??? How about some feed back. Really like the car would rather wait on next gen motor and maybe by then they will have worked out some of the problems.:brokenheart:

Out of the 100,000 units sold. Yours has a problem so now these cars are problematic.

These cars are not all that problematic. Sorry for your luck on yours, but its not the norm. If you look on internet forums it's going to seem like every car in the world is problematic because you are looking in a place where people post when there is an issue. Extra anxious people even post thinking things are broken when they are not. Nobody posts and says "My car started today and got me to work just fine." If you wait for the next gen if it ever happens, it will have it's own new car problems.

There has been only one complete attempt to fix the car, now it is on its second. The problem is the dealership just threw an ECU at it because they didn't actually diagnose it properly. It could be as simple as a bad sensor. Just because they didn't fix the issue the first time doesn't mean you have a lemon, or that the car is problematic. The dealership will get 3 more times(including this one) to fix this specific issue before the OP can actually claim it is a lemon.

fyi, i've been monitoring vwvortex and golf mk7 sites for issues with new golf. Considering subaru and toyota have reputation for reliability and vw has just the opposite reputation it's interesting that I don't see any patterns (in fact almost no problems people complain about) besides failed turbos and most of those folks are running tunes with a lot more boost. now vw fixes those under warranty and does address the issue with new revisions of the turbos (even if unsuccessful thus far it seems). of course the car is still under a year out but i would assume the take rate for golf is higher than for brz/frs. now, there are a lot of patterns in brz/frs decent amount of various problems even if only 10-20 cars were reported out of 100000.

so i personally don't think it's ok that almost 4 years later people buy a new car and have major issues.

come down dude. i suggest you re-read the op. the car's been 3 weeks at dealership and counting.

now maybe for you a new car throwing cells is nothing to worry about and you personally can disable all codes in ecu in 5mins and be happy.

A handful of issues does not represent major problems for all.
Ya if I was him I would be pissed, if it happens to me I will be pissed, but to make the sweeping judgement that there are these massive problems is just not correct. I still think he has a crappy service department more then a serious issue since even a whole engine replacement doesn't take 3 weeks!

I see the ones with the red highlight explain what's going on with them. What about the rest? "Engine failure" is pretty vague. Is there any specifics on the cause for each one? If the cause is the same for many of them, then it's definitely time for Toyota to look into it and do some kind of recall.

From what I recall these are issues related to the Cams going out of whack (for lack of a better word). There have been attempted fixes with new ECU updates, but I am noticing new FRs/BRZs on this forum still posting about Cam related codes. But it is not all a software issue...it seems the Cam itself can malfunction from a mechanical standpoint, throw a Cam code, then starve the engine of oil , and result in engine failure.

The list does not help much though as many of those issues could be minor, some may not be engine issues at all, some may have been modded (and don't say that isn't a factor) and some may have been appeasement repairs for crickets only.

Thanks to all for your opinions.Now for an update. First week cam gears and sensors on one side replaced, second week cam gears and sensors on other side replaced, third week ECU replaced. This was handled by three different technitions. When I was told car was ready to pick it up I started it and was aware immediately it was not right but was willing to drive it home. Just let it warm up as it was a cold day and before I could put it in gear check engine!!! Service manager said he would give it to his best technicians. They have not as yet told me new code assessments. So yes, I am letting them have another go at it. Will keep y'all updated. For the gentleman who gave me the grammer lesson yes I 'm from West Texas as general rule were friendly in Texas but give me a reason, and I do have an oil field redneck side. Not writing a novel dude.

You have way more tolerance for that service department than I would! Sounds like they should have had their "best" on it from the start. The sad part is that now they have mucked it up so bad that whatever the real issue was is lost in their screwing around with everything.
I know it may not mean much right now but there really are not that many serious issues so once they finaly fix yours you should be good to go!


Nobody was talking about your grammar (in fact no body was talking about grammar at all) and yours is great! The references were to the vgi dude that feels since you have a problem all the cars have major issues but instead of responding to a question decided to go on the attack.

Let us know how it goes. I find it odd they changed the ECU and the Cams in a 2015. The car should have come from the factory with all the latest updates.

That list of engine failures should include what specific problem there was. These could be for major issues like DI seals leaks to the minor issues like cricket fuel pump replacements.

On the low end roughly 1,500 86 per month. 2800 on the high end. Over 4 years thats between 70,000-130,000 cars. And 280 repprted failures on this forum. (While not ever owner is a member, theres still alot of members) thats a pretty good record before taking into accountability of Tcoat's "why it went in" theory.

OK here again!!! Told me it is still throwing codes after replacing ECU. They are very unspecific about codes at this time. But they said they were going to send for another ECU, and it would be two weeks. Also told me when the new unit is installed they would do some data logging and send it in, as well as call in a special service tech. Guess it will be six weeks before I get an answer.

I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal.

I didn't read the whole thread, so I apologize if this has been covered, but please open a case with Scion Customer service and let them know that at a minimum you want compensation (car payments) for all the time that the car was in the shop, or a new motor, or if it comes to it, a buyback and swap for another FRS.

Keep all documents and look up your state's lemon laws to fully explore your options at this point.

At this point I would pull it from that dealership and take it to another even if I had to eat the tow costs! From every thing you have said it sounds like they have major service department issues. This constant "we will get the next level to look at it" crap is just a time buyer.
