Your most amazing vs most humiliating moments in your brz

Got my BRZ just over a week ago and have already had some incredible moments, topped off with horrible failure, so I thought I'd see if anyone else has any stories to share.

Amazing as in you did something abnormally cool/skillful, preferably with onlookers, or just anything that stands out in your memory in a positive way.

Humiliating as in you made some kind of error, had mechanical failure, wrecked, or just plain clumsiness.

Give an example of either one, or both, whichever you prefer.

I'll obviously start.

Amazing- Having just gotten the car and accidentally drift a turn, realize how easy it is, and begin to do it at will at a couple select turns near my house. I remember one in particular where I slid around the turn sideways, swiveled a little while burning out, and straitening out and continued down the road with a couple cars far enough to be safe but close enough to see.

Humiliating- Doing it in the rain and accidentally giving it what I would when it's dry, doing a complete 180, deer in headlights and let it stall as it screeches to a stop, car won't start, cars start coming. Luckily I put on my flashers, got it started, and got out of the way, but it was mortifying none the less.

I haven't drifted since...

This thread has the potential to devolve into a massive argument about street drifting/public endangerment/etc...

In my case, it was only a few weeks after I got the car that I put my winter tires on. These are new winter tires, so they still have that mold release agent on them, making them extra slick... not to mention that the day after I put them on it got up into the 50s. Couple that with wet pavement because it was drizzling and I was basically driving on drift tires. I decided to see just how slick they were, so I turned the aids off, and at the next intersection, decided to do a little right turn drift. I completely underestimated how little grip the rear tires had, and proceeded to completely spin out (the answer is, they basically had NO grip whatsoever.) I ended up basically facing the curb, about a foot away from it (very lucky I didn't hit it and tear off the front lip or screw up the bumper), pointing in the opposite direction I was going before I made the right turn. Basically, instead of a 90 degree turn, I had made a 180 degree turn.

There were no cars on the right, or I would not have even attempted it, but there were two cars that had been facing me at the intersection before I had made the turn. I was COMPLETELY embarrassed, and hung my head in shame as I slowly accepted the fact that I looked, and was acting, exactly like an idiot boy racer. Those two cars were not impressed either. One honked at me, and both of them went around me without letting me back up.

Needless to say I ate some humble pie that evening.

amazing moments are far too many... first time I "raced" a car on the highway, the endless let's race bro encounters, fellow subie fan recognitions, constant compliments on the ride.

most embarrassing moment? stalling the car on a hill 3 times the first week I had it...

New to the forum so I apologize if I'm bringing up a taboo subject.

That sounds exactly like what happened to me though, the only difference being there weren't cars right in front of me, but one on its way down the road with me pointed straight at it. This just caused an increasing sense of dread like a shark approaching as you struggle to get on the boat. I was frantically jamming the starter button begging it to let me get out of there. I got to the center of the medians just in time. Humble pie indeed.

I was already embarrassed doing this as it is, I'm far too old for it, but after I got a taste the thrill was too intense to resist. I chalk it up to still being in the new toy phase before settling into daily driving. It will pass.

Most amazing - Catching a patch of ice at the beginning of a sweeping on ramp, thats when i learned how much control this car really has!

Most embarrassing - (after a corrolla stopped on an on-ramp yield sign) stalled trying to smoothly pull out in front of traffic, luckily i didnt get far. I still panicked and gunned it, determined not to stall. I did the opposite and peeled out side ways into the next available gap and spun for nearly 50 ft after on the ice -__- again happy this car is so controllable.

Wilsonk227 01-17-2015 03:33 AM

Got my car a month and a half ago so I havent had that much either xD

But yesterday night driving home from work, a Blue series BRZ flashed me from behind, drove up next to me and we all just waved with smiles xD His friend was actually taking a picture or recording a video, I'm not sure. Wonder if they're on here lol

Thorpedo 01-17-2015 10:00 AM

Amazing: Winning consecutive regional autocross championships in my first two years of competition.

Humiliating: At an autocross school (where I was an instructor for drivers of the twins) I lost control in my own car, spun, and hit a giant rock. It looked really bad but I only did minimal damage. My "students" were a little nervous after that! Lol

BlackMonarch 01-17-2015 11:48 AM

Amazing: Pulling off a flawless downhill "canyon" run (on a closed and controlled course under supervision of a race official, of course) against a 370Z. He took me in the straights and we battled it out in the corners and it was beautiful. Stopped and had a chat when we wrapped up about 20m later.

Awkward: Having a kid come up to me asking about my Ferrari, and having to disappoint him and advise it's just a Subaru.

dbrandt01 01-17-2015 12:53 PM

Amazing: Just for being on of the very very few that has this type of car where I live. Most people just want to talk and always makes me feel good.

Humiliating. Pretty much the whole first week I had the car since I was learning how to drive a manual and I stalled a lot haha.

kberkel 01-17-2015 03:49 PM

Amazing - The smiles on passengers faces when whipping the tail out on a turn. It's almost fool proof.

Humiliating - Flew into a long left turn, thinking "This will be fun!" Tail came out, overcorrected and almost launched into the curb.

I guess all I do is slide the tail.

dan_k 01-17-2015 04:01 PM

Amazing: Recovering from potential bad situations at the track because the car is so predictable.

Humbling: Getting out accelerated by a Sienna in order to get onto the highway.

BRZZZZZZZZZZ 01-17-2015 11:07 PM

My favorite triumph was probably when some kid in a FRS pulled up beside me and started revving his engine (I think he had a Tomei exhaust too because it was REALLY loud), it became pretty clear when the light turned green who was boosted and who was not.

(All on the streets of Mexico of course)

I had to google to find out what a Sienna was.. it's a mini van.. that is embarrassing lol. At first I had 0 complaints with the car, but after some time with the car you can include me in the "wish it had more power" crowd. Hoping the OFT makes as dramatic a difference as people claim.

Did the exact same thing, 1 day apart, myself LOL. Gave the same flick in the rain and it swapped ends super fast. Got on the clutch and brakes and once stopped kicked it in 1st and took off right away without missing a beat :).

Another few awesomes. Autocrossed only once in my life. Only regional so no one really good, but i beat a bunch of veterans with cars I would imagine are much better then mine with great tires, while i was on the stock Primacy. Didn't miss a gate or any thrown out runs. Also on my last and fastest run, hit a cone, knew I hit it because I heard the big clunk, kept on with the run. Get back to the board and see no penalties. From my bud who was there, I hit it, it shot straight up and landed back in the square. Better lucky then good :).

malave7567 01-19-2015 09:34 AM

Amazing moments? I can't really define that, I just like driving the car every day.

Humiliating moments? Putting a dent in my passenger side rear quarter panel at an autocross. Span out on the last turn of the course on my 2nd or 3rd run and hit a large cone that was laid on its side to indicate the finish line. Luckily didn't hit the timing lasers.

atledreier 01-19-2015 10:41 AM

Best moment: Nûrburgring Nordschleife

Most awkward: Entering a car park at a car meet, was going to do a few donuts before parking, forgot to switch off the TC and made a few lame circuits of the car park before I crawled under a rock.

Model Citizen 01-19-2015 10:44 AM

Best moment:

sitting in a secluded park a nice man in his mid to late 40s pulled up in his reasonably priced small sedan and asked if i wanted to go for a walk in the woods with him

worst moment: saying no

Kuri 01-19-2015 11:37 AM

Best Moment:
Friend behind me (Stock) at HPDE with her instructor. Said my brz was a "loud" one as I shot off on the straight.

Worst Moment:
Attempted to gas in a double left turn and went sideways next to an acura mdx.
White BRZ (Friend) Behind me also did the same thing except he was trying to kill a mosquito in the middle of a turn and hit the gas.

Tandem XD

Hydaral 01-19-2015 11:48 AM

Mine are pretty tame I guess.

In the wet, VSC sport on, gave it a bit of accelerator around a 90 degree bend, tail loose for a couple of seconds or so before it snapped back.

Crossing a railway crossing towards a red light, in second gear, about 20 km/h, still red so I clutch in and brake a little, light turns green so I get back on the accelerator and let out the clutch, and then do the clutch-bounce thing through the intersection, with everyone stopped at the other red light watching. Still not too sure why this happens, I guess not enough accelerator?

I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine best and worst.

brandonblt2 01-19-2015 12:53 PM

Worst:
Ive had a few first time I brought the car and drove the car off the dealer lot I got stuck on a hill for an 1 hour with cars backed up behind me. It was a one-way street so the people behind me had no where to go. I got lucky and a guy walking down the street knew how to drive stick and offered to get me up the hill. It was pretty embarrassing buying a new car and getting stuck around the corner.

Best:
Hitting a handbrake turn in front of a crowd of teenage girls. Cause we all know teenage girls love a well executed handbrake turn.

MikeM7 01-19-2015 01:45 PM

I absolutely hate when I forget to turn off TC.. try to throw the back end out a little on a turn and the car just makes a loud chirp/fart and doesn't do anything, right after you just revved the engine and got everyone's attention...

mjh712 01-19-2015 02:24 PM

Amazing- Accidental Drifts are always fun. But I was driving home from work one day, and as I passed a group of little kids, one of them screamed "Racecar" as I drove past.

Humiliating- Assumed the half inch of snow was nbd, tried to go to work, saw how bad the main roads were, turned around, and 3 turns away from my house, the front tires hit a patch of ice under the snow as made a turn and I hit a curb doing <10mph. It truly was a slow motion car accident. Scraped the front bumper a bit, popped a few of the plastic screws out of the front wheel liner, and got some curb rash on the rims. Bought snow tires the next day. But since no one noticed that, I guess I have to go with stalling the car when people are behind/with you.

ashtray 01-19-2015 02:44 PM

Amazing: bought mine June 2012 when they had just come out (and there was a 6+ month wait). People gawked as I drove by. Had a motorcyclist pass through an intersection just staring at my car the whole time. (Thought he would crash!) People were always taking pictures of my car. I'd park way out in a parking lot and there would be a couple people just walking out there to check out my car. I'd get approached all the time about it.

Embarrassing: I stalled it once while backing out of a spot while people were oogling my car. "Look at me, I'm a big hot shot in my fancy sport ca... Doh!" :D

x1UP 01-19-2015 03:17 PM

Amazing moment - Not too many amazing moments yet as i've barely had it during the Summer months when many more people would notice it. But....i've had people stopping at your car and taking pictures with it. Drivers wanting to know what it was.

Humiliating moment - stalling the car, when it was brand new, because I didn't know how to drive manual yet...

MikeM7 01-19-2015 03:26 PM

Since everyone's sharing stalling stories.. I had one just yesterday. I was pulling up to a busy intersection where there's usually someone walking up and down the line of cars begging for money or selling news papers (they are interchangeable if you ask me, both look sad and homeless and make me uncomfortable). Anyway.. these people are often a little weird and hobo-ish obviously, so I'm thinking to myself how awkward this is going to be from now on and wondering if he's going to harass me for money, comment, ask questions, touch my car etc.

Was so busy worried about how to avoid the hobo I forgot I'm not driving my wife's car. Rolled to a stop still in second gear, car immediately died, and the newspaper slingin hobo walks by at that exact moment and didn't even acknowledge me for any reason.. money, car, fact that I just stalled out right next to him... acted like I was invisible which somehow made it even worse.

Another slice of humble pie for me... newspaper hobo don't care about me or my ride.. apparently I'm not even worth pointing and laughing at.

Akari 01-19-2015 04:19 PM

Amazing: Getting to really start learning how to drive my car on canyon roads(entirely way too fast) on my way back from purchasing it in Colorado. By the end of the trip I truly felt I could safely push this car near the limits and was comfortable kicking out the back end in a controlled slide.

Embarrassing: Being in front of another BRZ on a nice twity road and having to drive like a grandma as to not break any of the $800 worth of liquor bottles in my trunk. Pretty sure he thought I was just the worst type of person.

RobertPaulson 01-19-2015 04:27 PM

amazing, taking my car to a car control clinic and finally pushing the super sports to their full extent, just an amazing tire and improves the handling so much. I was getting compliments all day on how well the car knifed into corners.

most embarrassing, second day of ownership, have marla in the passenger seat and I'm doing a u-turn at a light (legal). It's wet and about 40 outside on the stock tires and had not noticed that marla was messing with my traction control buttons and i hit a bump in the road which caused my foot to stab the gas and did a 270, barely saved it and this was in front of several vehicles and a cop, who found me in the parking lot to have a chat about my stunt.

Special_K 01-19-2015 05:11 PM

Amazing: Perfectly executed drift run with my buddy riding shotgun, and him getting jealous of my twin even though he has a built '05 STI.

Humiliating: Keying my own car while trying to unlock it with groceries in my hand. Then brushing up against the touch up paint while it was still wet and smearing/globbing it.

IDFWU 420 01-19-2015 05:59 PM

Amazing: nothing yet since I just got the car

Humiliating: tried going over a bump slowly and stalled when people were looking lol

qoncept 01-19-2015 06:07 PM

Oh, this is an easy one.

Best: Showing up at a local Corvette Club autox and beating the fastest Vette by a ridiculous 8 seconds.

Worst: Showing up to my first SCCA autox in years and DNFing my first run so bad that I got a talkin' to from the safety steward.

That is no excuse.

I drifted mine on the way home from picking it up on accident :)

I'm new to manual so I'm still learning :P

PollosHermanos 01-19-2015 06:53 PM

Amazing: Having people ride in my car during an open autocross event just after I got the car. I had person after person asking me if the car was stock and not believing how much fun it was and how well it handled. It was so awesome to see people get so excited about it.

Embarrassing: To be fair this is less embarrassing and more just a constant annoyance. I was out with my non-car friends one morning (also in their 30s) and had to leave to get my tint applied on the BRZ. When I said that I had to leave one of them asked if I had time to pick up Vin Diesel on the way or if he was going to meet me there. These jokes, while subtle/clever, continue. Love my friends but car people they aren't.

LOL

It's not your friends fault if you choose to live your life a 1/4 mile at a time :-)

Cope52 01-21-2015 01:03 PM

Where do I start? Getting dusted by gramps in his LeSabre, explaining the crickets at gas stations and parking spots, having to open my door to receive my coffee at Dunkin drive-thru because the power windows broke. Amazing? Any back road I can let loose on forgives all..

BRZBlack 01-25-2015 03:51 AM

Worst: Stalled it at a stoplight in front of a bunch of people downtown on a saturday night. They pointed and laughed.
Best: Let my older brother take her to the store during a family BBQ to grab some stuff. (Talks V8's/American muscle all the way) He came back with a huge smile on his face. "That's the most fun I've had in a car in a long time. Like it's on rails."

jwSubMOA 01-25-2015 07:30 AM

Best: taking a friends friend for a ride and making him cry and beg to get out.

Worst: 11pm, no traffic, .5 mile from home. Legit 90 sec burn out followed by a loooonggg, beautiful pair of tire marks. Immediately rounding the curve in the road and running into a police road block. "Did you really just stop in the road and do a burnout?". "No", while tire smoke rolls out of the interior like a Jamaican nightclub.

Talus1 01-25-2015 08:10 AM

Best: Driving my BRZ away from the Porsche dealer after test driving a used Cayman and realizing that the BRZ is still compelling in comparison.

Worst: Being parked between two pick up trucks in a busy Beer Store parking lot and not being able to back out into traffic because I can't see over/around/under them. I ended up waiting for one of them to leave...

MikeM7 01-25-2015 02:12 PM

These are great stories everyone, thanks for participating. I was worried nobody would chime in, but this turned out to be a pretty entertaining thread :)
