Tuning?

Hey guys,

Just purchased a 2014 FRS, what a surprise?! Lol ok, all jokes aside...I've just moved from owning three Mazdaspeeds/Mazdas where their main tuning apparatus is a Cobb accestuner, where we could data log, fine tune the vehicle and make new parts compatible.

I've made multiple attempts to figure out what device is widely used for the FRS/BRZ platform for modifications and for when I move forward in the forced induction scene.

Now I would like to apologize but, I am fairly new to tapatalk and can't seem to navigate through the forum...so please, a simple nudge or advice to which tuning device is used rather than flaming, but though it IS expected...thanks in advance

Imo you have 2 options

Ecutek and open flash tablet. If you plan to go force induction get ecutek. Most tuners use this platform. If you plan to stay na nothing beats shivs open flash tablet. Free tunes updates both 91 93 and e85 with header support and without.

Thanks man...I saw ecutek at a Dynosty website but they said if I want to order, I'd have to send my ecu to them? My Accessport was a direct plug Lin through the obdii and I can load new maps or do logs and so on so forth...

Device similar to cobb access port is Open flash tablet

It flashes tunes, does logging ,displays real time data ect

www.openflashtablet.com

talks to @Shiv@Openflash

and see links below.

They do tunes for NA cars with various bolt on mods and E85, tunes included in price , they do do some FI tunes price included but only for their specific kits an SDB turbo and vortek supercharger and an OFT 350 turbo kit due for release jan 2015.

Ecutek tuning platform is more sophisticated and has some extra features such as map switching and flex fuel sensor support and more support for FI

It laptop based software and a connection cable rarther than a tablet device

but does cost more tunes not included in price.

www.ecutek.com

talk to @DeliciousTuning or @moto-mike

need to work out what you want and what you want to spend and what features you want or need.

Ecutek and openflash tablet are probably the most widely used unless your a do it yourself guy then look at Tactrix Ecuflash for DIY tuning.

It depends on how you buy it. Ecutek needs tune, license and a cable. You can just buy a tune but as you mentioned you need to send your ecu in. But not data logging and i would advise against this. Next you can buy a license and tune. This give you the right till data log and flash your own ecu. But you will need a cable. If you can find and barrow one locally you can save money. Open flash gives you every thing much like the other platform you used to. I use open flash tablet and really like it.

Edit. Forgot to mention ecutek requires a laptop for operations like logging and flashing

Cannot see why you would have to send ecu to them, unless they are flashing it for you saving you the cost of buying an ecutek cable. you would still have to buy licience though.

Usually you buy cable and licience and they can email tune to you

spend some time in the tuning section of this forum. Lots of advice and perspectives there

Yea, I can't seem to figure this app out, I normally go on my desktop but since I am always on the road and just recently getting out of the military, I can't seem to find an opportunity to get on an actual computer and just go on my phone or tablet

Yep looks like the $399 covers licience and tune only.
you send them ecu, they flash it and return it.

save cost of cable which is about $250 or so your money, but got to factor in postage and insurance (ecu's not cheap to replace).

Note Ecutek tunes are generally locked and the ecu is also locked by ecutek licience.

Meaning if you want to move to another flashing system you have to get ecu unlocked by your original tuner.

openflash don't lock tunes or your ecu.

Not true. You can just buy a tune if your shop is a master tuner. Most dont do this as its a pita and you cant do logging.

just be aware openflash tablet does not support flex fuel sensor or on the fly map switching and only support a very limited number of FI kits.

They have E85 tunes but it either full E85 or petrol and you cannot run a mixture and you need to run tank down to empty and reflash to change fuels without flex fuel sensor support.

Yes correct if you go into the tune shop, but you still need to buy a licience or already have a ecutek licience ?

some tune shops were renting out cables i think

think moto east and delicious do the flash and go tunes for about 300 plus ecutek licience if needed

Lol wow tuning options for the FRS sure is a PITA!!!...the Accessport was fully customizable with no add on issues, device/cable/licensing combination/issues...$600 and you're good to go
