BorgWarner EFR / JDL turbo install!!!

It was a project that took longer than expected. But, many projects involving custom fabrication work can take a bit longer than expected. In all the car was down for 16 total days (including weekends). Special thanks to the great folks at JDL and Delicious Tuning for all their assistance in making this project possible. Today we started up the first BorgWarner EFR /JDL turbo system. BorgWarner EFR turbo, JDL headers/FMIC/down pipe, Koyo radiator, Spal fans, Mocal oil cooler, DW65c pump, DW700cc injectors, Delicious Tuning MAP sensor. The car was flashed with the Delicious Tuning "Flash n go" map for initial test and "break in". The car will be returning shortly for a full flex fuel kit install and dyno tune (on our Mustang dyno). We will follow up with more data and results as time permits. Was actually thinking about relocating the washer fluid reservoir or getting a longer tube and extending it past the ABS

Looks nice. Don't forget to add some kind of heat shield to MAF harness, or it will melt.

That would probably be a big benefit for the temp of air it's taking in as well. I modified a bunch of stuff to retain my washer fluid bottle in spring. I ended up removing the bottle in fall to install a meth pump and the tank was still like 95% full. I should of just removed it in the first place haha |
Thanks for all the pics. The different lengths of the bolts for the 4 bolt flange are bothering me though. :D

Intake is where it is because thats where it fit. Its actually oval at the turbo side and round at the other end, so its not "rubbing" as bad as you might think. There just is not much room behind the head lamp to stick a filter and we were not removing the washer bottle. Its the first one and JDL might decide to make a few changes. The expectation is that this will now be an offering from them.
There are 3 bolts and 1 stud on the 4 bolt flange. Due to the design of the hotside you can not get a bolt under the turbo in 1 location. We had to use a stud (like an OEM Subaru turbo) for the obstructed hole (the longer threads in the pic). Even then, I had to machine the stud down (in length) and the set the nut on the turbo flange while lowering the turbo over the stud, then start threading. Its a tight fit. |
The IC and piping is the same on all our kits. We are unsure as to whats different with this one. Everything was built off our car here. We did our best to resolve the initial issues based on the photos sent to us.

Shoot ma an email and I can go over everything we had to "tweak" in the end. The brackets and extra parts you were so kind as to send out were greatly appreciated. Bill is scheduling to get the car back, Flex Fuel kit installed and the car on the dyno. I will have concrete results and data on output then. But from the test drive (at 10psi) the turbo spools fast and feels strong. |

Mike, the boost is strong with this one lol. Trying not to get pulled over because I'm straight piped all the way back with no cats whatsoever. Can't wait to see what numbers I'll be at with e85!

There were some brackets he had to fab up.

We made those brackets. Its something we will offer in the near future as well

JDL was nice enough to fab up the radiator brackets based on some pix I sent them. We had different ideas about how to relocate the radiator and condenser. We used the JDL supplied brackets, but had to modify the upper brackets. The lowers worked just fine as they were supplied.

Isn't the turbo really close to the pulleys and the BOV is like near the fan or was I confused looking at the image?

I'm driving to Phoenix Saturday so JDL can install their 3" exhaust and see if they can't make a shield for the belt and one for the air filter.

Wastegate is "in" the fan. We had to remove a couple of the fan guard bars to make clearance. Turbo is very close to the belt.
There is only so much room, it is a tight fit, but it fits. |
The room was there the issue was the beam not being trimmed enough. I trimmed it a bit more to allow the IC to go forward. Doing that allowed for the rad brackets to go back into the original spot we made them for. It pulled the actuator off the fan and the AC fitting off the end tank. I'll get some pics up tomorrow.

In the pics, it looks to me like you actually moved the bottom of the radiator Back, in the wrong direction.
I moved my radiator forward at the lower mounts by drilling new holes forward of the oem ones and gained an inch or so of clearance. The lower brackets you have look to me like they move the radiator back quite a bit. |
Correct in turn it also moved the top. The brackets were to rotate the rad. They rotate it to allow for clearance for the actuator and AC fitting.

I just stretched the AC hoses (had to slightly bend the hard lines) but it was easy to move the bottom forward, and this is where I gained most of my clearance. I also used upper tabs that mounted it forward as well.
There's tons of room in front of the radiator to move it forward. My FB turbo kit had less clearance than yours did. My downtube was touching the fans. |
@ Mike the snake, having installed both the FBM kit and the JDL kit are very different in their fit.
@ JDL, glad that worked. We had already trimmed the bumper more than any pix provided and moved the core as far forward as it would go without trimming the scalloped edge off the beam. There was limited space to move it forward without contacting the oil cooler (or relocating it) as well. But trimming the beam more and moving the core more was an option we just had not gone down that path. Always more than 1 way to skin a cat. |
