Trip to japan, suggest any good JDM FR-S items to bring back?

Family member is going to japan. Whats a good JDM item to ask her to bring back? Something not to expensive and can be transported back easily?

Die$eL 09-19-2014 09:45 AM

A MK4 Supra please...

Bring your scion badges and trade a local for toyota ones?

Or bring your FRS and trade for a GT86.

MokSpeed 09-19-2014 09:50 AM

Full FT86 Nur Spec lip kit. Get the giant wing too. If you don't want it I'll buy it from you. :D

Honestly I wouldn't bother with car parts there. Do you really want to make your family member go through customs with car parts? If he decides to check his bags, then that's a heavy bag they'll charge for weight. Just tell him to keep an eye out for cool handheld gadgets and electronics.

If you really wanted to get something car related I guess you could get the FT86 airbag cover for your steering wheel?

One of these (or a couple and sell me one)...

That is a model kit by the way.

CAMBAM_6 09-19-2014 10:54 AM

Probably items that come in small packages...obviously shes not coming back with any really large significant parts....Maybe JDM turn signals or Fog lights...Toyota Badges you can buy here for cheap. Maybe a Steering wheel or something like that...Realistically your not getting much I would probably ask her to find JDM shirts or Toys of GT86's lol

AznBRZer 09-19-2014 11:35 AM

Door brace?

Shark_Bait88 09-19-2014 11:43 AM

Maybe a JDM spec gas pedal? About the only functional thing that seems like it could reasonably fit in a luggage bag to come back.

Or JDM exhaust tips, if you haven't put a catback on and are planning on keeping the stock exhaust.

Kimsey47 09-19-2014 12:09 PM

From the sounds of things you could probably trade a lot of FR-S related items for GT86 items if you could locate a willing local.

The JDM sec twins have a different gas pedal? What's the difference?

It's extended (taller) to make it better for heel-toe shifting. The reason that the US one is shorter is likely due to people being worried about the gas pedal getting stuck on the carpet after all of the "unintended acceleration" stuff.

My coworker brought the Tamiya 86 model kit back for me a few years ago. Still haven't built it.

When I go in the spring, I'm going to try to bring the TRD duckbill spoiler back with me. It should fit in my bag.

Honestly unless she finds it in a junkyard it wont be very cheap. I lived there for 2 years and know first hand. With the yen rate and just items there in general, the US market it alot cheaper then the Japanese market. Maybe something like a GT86 Toyota brochure from the dealership?

Captain Caveman 09-20-2014 11:37 AM

I'll take a TRD duracon shift knob, thank you.

If they're going to be in Tokyo, have them stop at SuperAutoBacs in Daiba. When I lived there, that was my go-to place for aftermarket car parts. It's a little tricky to get to, since you have to take a monorail to a station that's meant to take people to Haneda airport.

It's probably only worth it if your family member is into cars, otherwise this'll be a pretty aggravating task.

But they do carry a wide array of aftermarket parts for "current gen" cars.

There are plenty of other autobacs that are easier to get to...

I've been a few times for work and honestly, I didn't see much incentive (price wise). There are area 86's all round the country, and if you make it to Toyota city you can always visit the museum (which has a ton of cool stuff), but none of it is cheap.

Honestly I would just look for little toys or something; any actual car parts will probably not save you much money.

J.C. 09-24-2014 07:19 PM

You might find some JDM goodies at Up Garage. Definitely worth checking out regardless!

Quentin 01-05-2015 07:00 PM

Looks like I'm going for work at the end of the month. They are paying for my bags, so I might get something biggish.

Visit the appropriate museums.

Bring back a car.

The only place I get to go to next month is Portland!

Vincenttam 01-05-2015 09:23 PM

I'll take some toyota badges!!

funwheeldrive 01-05-2015 11:37 PM

Can you grab me a red shift knob? I want one so badly.

Tomcat07 01-06-2015 10:06 AM

Jdm headlights. The Toyota 86 headlights are the same ones as on the 2015 release series with the auto leveling projectors. After market headlights lose your high beams.

JDM Headlights are useless in the states because of the beam pattern being catered toward RHD users instead of us LHD users. If you're looking for the HID lights you will want to source some European LHD headlights.

On topic. Bring back some GT86 airbag covers :happyanim:

I think that since he never responded to or thanked a single reply that he probably isn't too big on updating!

JDM airbag and steering wheel, not sure how legal that'll be to bring in a suitcase as it might be considered explosive.

Yep, but there is no "might" about it!
You can not even begin to understand how hard it is to ship those things even when they are inert (no charge in them). The paperwork is an atrocity.

They just aim forward right? Someone here already got jdm headlights from Japan and put them in his frs... I'm pretty sure they work fine for him.

wmdrift 01-06-2015 11:13 PM

Check out superautobacs. Easiest one to get to is near daiba.

1GiantTurtle 01-06-2015 11:30 PM

wouldn't it be easier to get the headlights from the dealer?

Right beam has higher coverage on LHD, left beam has higher coverage on RHD.

So, did the Area 86 places ever materialize? I'm having a hell of a time finding any trace of their actual location. I'll be in Nagoya, Osaka, and near Kitakushu for 2 weeks.

I got one for Christmas and will be doing a build thread in the off topic once I start it.
I have done hundreds over the years and although mostly military the techniques are the same. I will try to remember to tag you when I start the thread.
