Best driving shoes??

Leave me some information!

Anything with a thin sole that lets you feel the pedals is fine. I've seen people swear by Kenneth Cole slip-ons. I personally wear Merrell trail gloves or Vibram fivefingers because I have them already and they're comfortable.

I like puma they are reasonably priced and really comfortable. Simpson makes a great shoe as well but you will be paying a lot for the name.

My favorite shoes to drive in are Vans. Slip on or laces, both are great and super comfortable. I also have a pair of Sparco Time 77 Canvas Casual shoes. These are awesome, but they run a bit small, so you have to get a size larger to properly be able to drive with them. I got them a size too small and I have a hard time doing heel-toe with them. Otherwise, they provide the best pedal feel for me and they're pretty sweet looking.

A lot of people seem to prefer Pumas.

I've found Converse Chuck Taylors are great. I use low top, but high top isn't too bad, just less movement from the ankle.

Either those or any Asics tigers. I've had my Macbeths for well over a year now and they're barely show any signs of wear and tear so great build quality. Really good pedal feel, not as good as tigers because they have thinner outsoles, but still really good. I think they're a lot more comfortable than my tigers though. Plus they work with more styles of clothing.

Any Piloti or Puma Speed Cats.

I have a few pairs of Pumas that are great for driving:

I have to try those, I'm on my second pair of Tigers but by the end of the first year they look pretty rough, definitely not a long lasting shoe.

The Asics/Onitsuka Tigers are the lightest shoes I've ever owned, my Converse feel like combat boots in comparison.

Go for it, man. I used to wear the 81 Ultimate Tigers, and they were great. Amazing pedal feel but I always had the issue of the heel area grabbing on the carpet because of that little lip it has; made it a little annoying everytime I would lift off of the clutch or transition from brakes to the accelerator. Plus, I just found them super uncomfortable for any extended periods of walking (terrible flat feet). By contrast, for a mild trade-off in pedal feel, the MacBeths are super comfortable, have a smooth heel area so no grabbing, and they're a lot more reserved styling wise.

Teseo 07-21-2014 07:25 PM

Try barefoot.

Pumas are good, as are Chuck Taylor Converse hi-tops (get an athletic insole for them, though... you'll need it). The low top chucks just don't work for my feet for long distances... the back edge biting into the heel and such is no bueno.

I've also heard good things about Piloti (sp?) shoes... once they re-release this summer.

I actually prefer my Puma Baskets over my Speed Cats. Just as good for driving and more comfortable for walking.

I asked this question a while back considering I'm into kicks. Considering what I've heard, Pumas and Onitsuka Tigers are heavily favored. I really like the Onitsuka Tigers Ultimate 81 and I've also got into wearing New Balance. I like New Balance because I can wear for driving and casual use. New Balance=Because Takumi.

511 Tactical are awesome shoes. Feels like bare feet but ...not.

Same here. Not a driving shoe per se but afford me excellent feel and control...and they always look great with jeans. I'm low top only though.

I like skateboarding shoes. The Puma driving shoes are too narrow for heel / toe shifting as the pedals are too far apart.

I've gone from these shoes, to cowboy boots, to even barefoot. I like these shoes though. I guess they're technically called "boat shoes" but I like them

My 5.11 tactical trainers are nothing like that. Then again, they're thick treaded soles for rough terrain, but the shoes weigh like they're new balance running shoes. Great for daily wear especially if you're doing something like Gunsite's Pistol 250 course (where you spend ALL DAY for 5 days on your feet doing range work), where you have to have terrain durable but structurally (that is, your skeleton structure) supporting footwear.

Best $100 I spent on footwear for shooting/hiking/climbing. Not so great for driving (doable, but you do have to get used to the numb feeling and judge throttle input by engine sound and tach movment alone, not by pedal feel as well).

Honestly, my low top converse were NOT good driving shoes. I do best with a mid to high top shoe. Chucks with their unsupported sole DO hurt after a short while, but put in some athletic insoles and they become fantastic driving shoes.

I've been daily wearing/driving my cream hi-top chucks for about a month now with those insoles and have had NO problems with comfort and pedal control is nice and direct for driving.

wheelhaus 07-23-2014 02:17 PM

I also vote Pumas (or similar motorsport influenced shapes). I've also used some skate shoes that have a flat bottom and square edge that worked pretty well, but i still prefer the Pumas by a large margin.

Whatever shoe you end up with, it should have a thin sole (for feels) and a predictable shape that usually either A- follows the contours of your foot, or B- has a flat bottom with square edges.

I've found shoes/boots with stiff/thick soles are the hardest to drive with, as well as running shoes with the bulged heel and big bulky knobs everywhere.

I don't find the Beacon Trainers thick at all. I've had Pumas etc being discussed as well.

Then we're probably talking about different 5.11 shoes. I'm guessing they've got different kinds of trainers now.

ThierryIsAble 07-24-2014 07:34 PM

I use the Onitsuka Tiger Serrano model. It's really good for heel toe downshifting while playing GT6 and the pedal feel is awesome!:burnrubber:

Thanks for all the input. I went with a pair of Onitsuka Tigers Mexico 66.

I have to say these are nice and thin, light, and well put together. They also are reasonable priced, $60, and have some nice style to them.

gf approved :)

Is it strange that I don't drive with shoes? I always go barefoot or with socks, even at the track

topazsparrow 08-03-2014 01:37 AM

It's hard to find retailers but these shoes are unbelievable both in comfort and durability.

I've got a pair that I've had for 3 years and I wear them almost every day. Considering the price point I cannot say enough good things about them.

**Best** driving shoes IMO:

Geox Xense Mox - very good pedal feel, maybe too good but sole not all that durable as the bottom peels rather quick, apparently same outsole design as their Red Bull Formula 1 boots. Made in Italy.

Porsche Design P'1700 Cannes - my current favorite, similar pedal feel as Geox Xense Mox but much more durable outsole and suede upper. Made in Italy by Muller & Meirer Lederwarenfabrik.

Porsche Design P'5000 Drive Pilot - daily beaters for work, good pedal feel and extremely durable construction overall. Made in Germany by Adidas.

Honorable mentions:

Geox Monet (still using this for winter no problems)
Puma Future Cat (upper and sole split at toe)
Adidas Monaco GP (just got real filthy no problems)
Porsche Design P'1700 Tokyo (right heel split)
Porsche Design P'5000 Supercup (lacing guides split)
Porsche Design P'5600 Driving Close (just too heavy no problems)

Caspeed 10-12-2014 08:17 AM

shoes

Any of the Adidas driving shoes, Adi Racer, Monaco, Jerez. Goodyear soles, nothing to snag, good pedal feel, good to walk around in. Alternate, any of the wrestling shoes, very light, flexible, nothing to snag, Not as good to walk around in.

Pumas a great but suck if you have wide feet. I can't stand around in them too long. I like MacBeths or my high top PF flyers. A little more rugged than Chucks but still good feel.

+1. I use vans. Great friction on the pedal and best shoes i've used thus far for heel toe in this car. I have a pair of sparco casual shoes and although they look and feel great, I can't heel toe in them very well because of the pedal setup in these cars. With custom pedals, maybe I'd use them more, but come track day, I use my vans.

Out of curiosity, which vans are you using? I bought a sparco esse shoes and I found it was uncomfortable to heel toe as you mentioned. I am not sure if I juz did not get used to the shoes or its design allows difficulty heel toe downshifting in our car. (I am able to heel toe with all my other shoes.. weird)
