DIY - Vertical Door Install 2013 FRS
8 Attachment(s)
**** edit on Oct 2016 **** I added a "Part 9" video below to show how far the modified door opens outward.
Yes, I know that many of you are major bigots when it comes to vertical doors so please DON'T LOOK AT THIS POST. Move on and save yourself all of the aggravation because obviously this post is for those of us who like them and we really don't want to hear your opinion. This is a DIY, not a blog where I'm asking for your slanderous remarks or photos meant to ridicule. Enough said and thank you for not ruining this for others who don't have your opinion. I have made a 7 part video series which will take over an hour to watch and it details every step necessary to install the Vertical Door, Inc. door hinges. There are many kinds of hinges out there but these do not require any welding or drilling and only minor cutting of the fender and body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwQqzwYrk-k&t=5s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp7wi_H9x-0&t=13s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMnf4375f_M&t=45s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6TIt9nEB9M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhGyEkvO660 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZI3g1dQ6SY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5r4fgkXw9m8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cktjTA3bsAc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyI7OfCReeI |
I'd like to see some classy pics of the finished product.
I know people hate this idea, but I personally like it. Adds flare. |
I'll post some when I get home from work tonight. I'm glad you like it. I was very torn weather to post or not with all of the negative feelings out there about them. I just decided "why let the many ruin it for us few" and threw it out there. I've always tried to be informative and helpful in my posts. I hope this post can be useful to someone else who wants to install them.

Nicely done dude! Looks like quite a bit of work cant wait to see the finished product think youll be the first FR-S Ive seen with vertical doors

All that being said, I would like to see some, as stated, "Classy pics" of the finished product. This would be one of the first I've seen. |
I'm not a fan of the vertical doors, but I do appreciate the work that goes into the modification. Even if someone wasn't looking to do the same install, they could use your video to see how the door cards are removed for a speaker or door deadening installation or how to pop the rubber gaskets off to run speaker wire to the doors.
You do need to add pics or video of the final product though. . that's the only thing missing. |
In for the finished pictures. Can't view videos at work.
And also in for the comments. |
will be lot of work cant wait to see when it done.
|
They are definitely a very unique upgrade. Personally a mod I would consider, but they are always cool to see at shows
I'm glad you posted this DIY! Nick C. |

I want to see final pics too.
For the naysayers - There IS a practical aspect to this. When it hails and I need to wedge the BRZ into the garage , I can only open the door enough to barely squeeze my fat ass out.... |
Good job on the DYI. Don't worry about the haters. Insecurity runs deep.
It's the lemming / witch trial syndrome. As soon as the number of people going negative reaches critical mass, all of a sudden everybody goes negative. I've seen many an idea go into the shitter because of this. |
I agree. I did say it's not my thing, but think it's great he's going for it. His car, his vision. :)
Being there Really so many vids of the install and being they show him taking his time to do it right, I bet it came out great and I hope he enjoys the finished product Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk |

I just feel that lambo door are meant for lambo. Call me dumb or insecure, but I see so many other ways that such a sum could be invested

Feeling personally attacked on a forum..no. I did wipe away the invisible tears though. :D

How come no one refers to suicide doors as, "1932 Ford doors"?

From the video, you still have to open the door the same way you normally would before flipping it vertical?
I think the whole functionality and luxury of the Lamborghini vertical doors is that they don't need to swing open at all. Never have to worry about swinging the door open and hitting something. My 2 cents. But I do understand that would need considerable changes to the vehicle side architecture to allow for that. |
Yes, there is a post on the hinge which forces the door to be opened partially but you do not have to go fully open to raise the door. I believe that it can be ground down on the 86 because of the structure of the door to allow the door to open in a more vertical manner. It is my next project but I probably won't get around to doing it for a couple more weeks.
|
That's awesome. It's like the vertical doors are a hidden feature. Normal passengers wouldn't even know :)
|
This fixes "getting out of the scion FRS/brz without kicking the door"

This would have been a cool modification if I was 13 years old and had just watched the first Fast and Furious movie. You should do some cool neon underglow lights to finish the look.
|
...do the windows still roll up/down when you close/open the doors? O__O
|
Thanks for posting the final pics. Car looks amazing! :)

I don't think it is the shock as much as the instability involved with having only one pivot point. When it is open there is considerable movement which I don't believe can be removed. Unfortunately, this is a structural issue which must be accepted if you want to do this modification. The only time it really bothers me is when I let the door open without keeping hold of it. It will open up with enough force to shake the whole car and bounce around.

You automatically assume that if someone expresses an opinion that isn't like yours or is like the majority's that they're a lemming? |
OP... Nicely done! Sharp looking machine!
|
So its not that vertical doors are flat out bad in my eyes except...
A. Having to open the door normally first makes this entire mod pretty stupid since it accomplishes almost nothing except adding more steps to getting in and out of the car. B. there is so much play in the movement that it looks like a bad hack. C. Its really not your vertical doors I hate, its those inner city ghetto bling blang wheels. (I do apologize for being an azz here but man those things just don't jive with the car) If the doors actually opened vertically like you would imagine they would (like a lambo) I could for sure see the benefits of this. |
I see your points. I'm working on modifying them to open in a more vertical motion but the play will probably not be able to be reduced. As for my wheels - it may be my age but I love the chrome - different strokes. :thanks:

Having only one pivot point, no matter how thick the steel is it will never be firm like the 2 hinge set up of a normal door. It's one of the attributes of this mod which can't be corrected. Like I mentioned earlier, it really only bothers me if I allow the door to raise without holding on to it.
|
Looks great!
This might be a stupid question, but how do you have a FT86 in Fl.? I understand the rebadging concept, but the OP actually says "FT86" in the 'drives' field in his avatar. If it IS just a rebadge job, then that is a little misleading. I completely expected to see the location be Australia |
