I had a shot at an fr-s today
I went by a dealer in miami and found a white fr-s up for sale. It was manual just like I wanted and was fully loaded with the bespoke radio etc. So the price was around 27k, basically 28k. That's okay, however under the price there was a section labeled market price and added 6k+ to the price. That left the car at 35k almost. I left because I really didn't think that could possibly be the price, that's 10k over msrp on a "pure price" car. I asked the salesman and of course he said they will all have that and always will, he showed me the corollas have like a 2k market price added on to them in the sticker as well. I've never bought a new car, just used ones and have always had relatively good deals. Is this a normal thing? Sorry at the expense of sounding like a new guy but new car buying is new to me....so I figured I'd ask the only people in the country that have bought the car.
And yes, I'm new but have been following this website for about a year now, not to mention the car since the original toyota / subaru fiasco. BTW that was all without adding tax, title and tag etc... |
Yeah a lot of shady dealers out there. I hope they won't be the reason for this cars downfall.
|
I called the same dealer and they told me it was a first 86 car and the guy that won it walked away from it. Now I understand why.
I have a deposit down at kendall toyota hopefully they won't pull the same bs. |
just to clarify..."pure price" is that you pay the advertised sticker price NOT the MSRP for the car. So dealers can mark up the car and sell it at that advertised price. However, they would be stupid to do this because of the competition and the availability of scion dealerships. There are plenty of FR-S' to go around for everyone, even if you have to wait a month it is absurd to pay a mark up. Just walk away and go to another dealership where they are not marking it up. There are plenty out there.
|
Which is why "pure pricing" is kind of a joke.
In theory it should make the purchasing process easier, but in reality it just gives more power to the dealership. |

All pure price means is you can't negotiate.

As much as I HATE dealers like this... if they can get someone dumb enough to pay a 10k markup over msrp on a Scion then more power to em.
I heard of a dealership in Miami that has a $1,200 DOC fee and people pay it like it's normal. Makes me wonder, does money grow on these palm trees they have down there? |

i just came back from the dealership in jax as all the jax fl dealers are getting theirs in already and they all added 5000 to the price for "market adjustment" saying that they are rare and everyone wants one. i threw a fit and some dumb kid bought it for 31000, for that i might as well get a 2013 genesis rspec 2.0t i was offered that for 27500 out the door.
only one dealer had it for 27,900 but he added some many dealer add on crap like toyotaguard 699, emergency tow assitance 299, etc., to jack up the price. to be honest it turned me off, i think i am just gonna go get the genesis coupe tommorrow. |
Yes sir. I've spoken to or visited every scion dealer in miami-dade. The only 2 that knew anything about the frs was headquarter scion and kendall scion. So if you're interested in putting down a deposit I'd get in contact with one of those dealers.

See, they negotiated a whopping $200 off for you with zero effort. Of course we all know even a moron with a 2 digit IQ could negotiate way more than $200 off. Fuck you Scion, fuck you very much. . . . And, for all those who assured us that Pure Pricing DID in fact mean MSRP...HA-ha! We told you it didn't. :) Yes I'm still going to check them out and consider buying one. My only other option is to wait for the BRZ to be sold at or near invoice, which most likely won't happen anytime soon. |
There's always room to negotiate and if you keep looking you will find what you want.
You will never been in the situation where if you don't buy the car then you've lost your chance at owning one. There a plenty around and plenty coming later on. There is going to be alot of extra models out there. |
i waived a check from the bank for 28000 in their face and they said they wouldnt take less than 31000....ive been buying 5000 worth of parts every year from this dealership, was a big turn off.

If you read that recent MT compare article, then you probably wouldn't want to get a Genny... |

Some dealers are just so STOOPID! |
|
Buy it out of state, plenty of scion dealers who will sell at msrp or a bit below.
The FR-S is not going to be rare..... |
it was actually one of those big conglomerate dealerships that own 10 of them in jax and other cities.
i dont take other peoples word on what is better than what when i'm spending 25k, i'll go drive it myself and decide for myself but considering i cant even test drive it i have nothing to compare against the subaru brz isnt here yet and our subbie dealers are small and i doubt they will get one anytime soon, i have been looking to buy a car for the past 3 weeks and am ready to buy now. |
I passed on a white, manual, bespoke stereo, tints, etc. car that was 27k. That car was at Lehman. I think headquarter is the most helpful from what I see. I still need to figure out the lease program since no one knows about that and I really wanted to lease the car.

I called around all Subaru dealers from MIA to West Palm Beach, There are some dealers who are not taking pre-orders, (waiting for a bidding war when cars get here). I pre-ordered at Pompano Beach Subaru. (Ask for Andre, and you can tell him David sent you, one of his pre-orders). Pretty nice guy. They are taking pre-orders. Lehman is taking pre-orders too. That's about it for dealers "close" to us taking pre-orders. |
I had the same thing happen to me about 3 weeks ago. The dealer wanted 4k over MSRP and wouldnt budge on their price. They said "do to limited quantity, blah blah bla, we want you monies!" From what i heard, that car was sold the next day and they said they now want 5k over msrp for the next one.
Dealers may have an effect on this car, so shop smart. |

If I want to buy a candy bar, the price is posted. If I want to buy a camera, the price is posted. If I want to buy a car.... the window sticker has MSRP but that's not really the price -- the price is only reached after private negotiations. Pure Price adds transparency. I can call around and find out who sells candy bars for a competitive price. Ultimately they still make a profit (just like in the negotiating scenario) but this saves me time, hassle, confusion, and at the end of the day -- they get a fair profit, so everybody wins. Frankly I'd rather they made money off of providing product knowledge and guidance rather than salesmanship and sleazy negotiation tactics. I welcome your input. :) |

I don't get it myself. Why not just wait until the initial feeding frenzy is over? Besides, at least for me personally I would never buy the first production year of a new car model. There are always too many growing pains involved in new car models their first year.
Patience is what wins when buying a new car. Unless you just have a ton of $$$'s to throw at the dealer. Right now I am saving $100.00 per week toward my FR-S and plan on buying next March. By then I will have a sizable down payment, the initial hype and feeding frenzy will be over and I will already have purchased my choice of after market performance/cosmetic parts and be ready to install instantly upon taking delivery of my car. I know it's nice to be one of the first to have something, but to pay a premium just to say you got it first is kinda crazy. |
I dont think the "market adjustments" will end during this 1st year. For every one of you who doesnt want to play ball there are 2-3 who are dumb enough. Like earlier in this thread someone said they sold the first one for $4k over MSRP and now the next one will go for $5k MSRP. IMO, the more you call around for availability the more the dealers think "it'll sell"
I think the best bet is to wait for a used one 1-2 years from now, but if this keeps up these cars might hold their value more than we think.. |

I agree with this. I have not seen the FR-S marketed as a "Limited Edition". It is a normal production model for Scion. It's just limited right now because it's new and a limited number have been manufactured and are available so far. Wait till next year when they are more common and the markup will go away. |
Remember, even the PT cruiser had 3-10K markups when they first came out. They couldn't GIVE those things away (I'm not kidding) as little as two years later.
