Kidney stones
Fuck those things. Anyone else here have them? I've spent the last two days with that was about the size of an m&m. Just had a lithotripsy to break the thing up, but damn am I still in some pain. It's amazing something that size can cause so much pain. Though that is pretty big for a kidney stone. And lucky for me they run in the family. I'm only 24 and this my fourth or fifth one. Guess I have even more fun times to look forward too

They can be genetic? Thought all you had to do was drink enough water
|
They can be more likely to happen. And not drinking enough water isn't the only thing can help cause them. It depends on what kind you have. For instance a lot of chocolate or spicy food can help them form for me. And of course I like both
|
They are most definitely genetic.
I've had one. And I'm determined to never have one again. I work for a large health related company (www.webmd.com) and have read ridiculous amounts on them. It's not just from dehydration/lack of water. All kinds of healthy (and some not so healthy) foods can also contribute to them. dark chocolate, tea, sugary drinks, spinach, instant coffee....all sorts of things! When I had mine, the nurse in the ER said it was close to coming out and would only be a few hours...well, apparently mine was as stubborn as I am as it took over a MONTH for it to come out. And when it did, it was the most anti-climactic thing ever  :( but I was glad that it came out. One of my former coworkers (female) has had both stones and children. She said the pain you get with a kidney stone is on par with that of childbirth. It's most definitely the closest men can get to having a baby... |
Wow never knew that
|
I've had 3. The first one was scary as hell because I didn't know what was going on. Went to the ER, MRI, shot of morphine, short 5m visit from a doc and $4500 later I was out the door.
Second one, went to small city hospital in OK (was on the road for work), exact same procedure, $800 (Yay totally crazy health care system). Third one I read about taking hot bath to loosen up the ureter to help with passing (from a Navy Seal's blog which I can no longer find). Basically you fill the tub with as hot of water as you can stand and keep it hot. Soak for 30m, then go for a short walk around the house and get back in. If the pain keeps increasing then head to the ER. I passed my 3rd stone in the tub. $0. |

I had a friend that drank massive amounts of milk and he ended up getting one. Went to the ER and ended up passing out from the pain. I hope to god it never happens to me, infact im getting a glass of water now.
|
I've never had one as of yet and I hope that I never do. I know people that have had kidney stones and it makes tough men cringe over in pain. No thanks!

I've heard that drinking a lot of Gatorade and similar beverages can increase your chances of getting kidney stones. Never had one, but I can only imagine how bad they suck.

Before I had mine, I would drink maybe 20 ounces of water a day...now I drink upwards of 100 ounces. |

That determines what changes you should make to your diet to make them less likely to occur. |

Just don't get gallstones.
Lol |
I've also heard cranberry juice helps keep them from forming.
Thankfully I haven't heard of any of my close relations having had them. Still, living in the desert and all, I should up my water intake ANYWAY. Btw, does consumption of quality beer actually help, or is that just an urban myth to justify more pub crawls? :D |

having never had a lithotripsy before i was hoping it would all be cake after. NOPE :mad0260: Woke up this morning in ridiculous pain. Seriously after this one I like i'm going to water only. well except for some alcohol:cheers:
and as far as beer helping protect against them... not really. Wine does though. |

These things SUCK. Mine started last October the day I took possession of my first home, I spent 12 hours in the hospital, almost passed out driving myself there. That one was only 4mm in diameter and I passed it myself. Over the next 3 weeks I passed about 6 more stones of unknown size on my own with no pain medication which caused me a lot of days in bed. I was all good for two months then woke up at 4am one day and had to catch a ride to the hospital. Motherfucking 7mm in diameter stone that I had to have surgically removed from my urethra, worst week of my life! 3 and a half months later and I have been OK since.

My wife used to get them at least once a year. She would rather do childbirth than kidney stones and she was in labor for 17 hours. She also drinks stupid amounts of water. What made her finally stop getting them was reading about bad water contributing to them (the water here sucks) and that not getting enough calcium apparently can trigger the body to horde the stuff (this obviously only works when you have calcium stones). So now she only drinks bottled water or water run through a high quality filter and takes a calcium supplement. She hasn't had one in 4 or 5 years. The last one was so impressive the doctor asked if he could keep it. Looked like the freaking asteroid from Armagedon. I got pulled over doing 95 in a 65 rushing her to the hospital. The cop took one look at her face, told me to slow down and sent us on our way. Not even a written warning.

I got my first 1 at 18 years old. I am currently 20 and have been hospitalized twice for kidney stones. I know, I get "you've had kidney stones? You're so young!" It's by far the worst pain I've been through. It's very similar to having your appendix bursting. (I've had that too..)
Let me help dispell some of the myths about kidney stones. Disclaimer: I am not a Doctor, nor have I had any medical practice. The following information is from what I have gathered through experiences and advise from Doctors. There are substances these stones can be made up of, Calcium (most common) or Sodium. Very salty or foods containing a lot of calcium can form these stones over time. But you do not want to cut calcium completely out of your diet due to the fact that your body will hold on to this calcium and can make your stones worse. Stuff like Tums with is a calcium based acid that you use to treat an upset stomach is an example of what can cause kidney stones. Drinking a lot of bottled or filtered water is a way of preventing kidney stones. |

Her sister started having them at 17 and has actually had them surgically removed 5 or 6 times above and beyond uncountable hospital visits. My daughter has had them since 15 and actually has kidney damage from them since they have been so severe. My son started having them at 15 as well and probably suffers through one every 3 months or so since then (he is 31 now). Diet changes including drinking special waters helped none of them. I have never had one in my life and do not ever wish to share their experiences. |
I've had two kidney stones (2012 & 2013). The pain had me in tears and you think by getting into a certain position it would relieve the pain but it doesn't. I googled to see if giving birth is more painful...guess what? Kidney stones are worse than giving birth!! (Anecdotal data). I haven't had one since 2013 but I've also made adjustments to my diet and exercising regularly.
Lets see if another happens down the road... |
