A pipe is a pipe right? The 100 dollar DC Sports overpipe review.
14 Attachment(s)
So just got this in after finding it on eBay for 100 bucks shipping included.
Attachment 72891 Pretty light box. Attachment 72892Attachment 72893Attachment 72894 I've installed the DC Sports uncatted, unresonated test pipe and it fit perfect with good welds and thick flanges. Upon taking the bubble wrap off this over-pipe I came face to face with what I can best describe as a "Frankenstein" pipe lol. Three sections with a different diameter pipes welded together to form the over-pipe. Attachment 72895Attachment 72896Attachment 72897 Its definitely the ugliest over-pipe currently available however, the welds are crappy! ;) Attachment 72900Attachment 72901Attachment 72902 Comes with decent looking hardware and a gasket as well. Attachment 72903Attachment 72904 Flanges look to be .5 inch thick. Same flanges used on their test pipe. I think they're pretty stout and way better than your typical no name eBay exhaust flanges. Attachment 72907Attachment 72909 Interior of the pipe looks like it flows well and the inside edges where the pipe meet the flanges (inlet and outlet) have been ground smooth. Not bad for 100 bucks IMO. I'll update after install tomorrow to see what the sound, power and fitment is like. Oh sorry, only have access to a butt dyno.. Thanks for letting us know. Looking forward to install impressions.

That pipe sure doesn't have much bend to it. Interested to see if you get any rubbing\fitment issues.
|
Those welds look to be a line of tacks more then a consistent bead. Its not the best picture but when a weld looks like a bunch of fish eyes that someone going along, zap, zap, zap. It works but often thins out the metal creating a weak point. This is a cheap and easy version of fusion welding.
This weld has one "fish eye" where the weld ended after going around. Also notice how this weld bead does not have that under cut concave face to it, thats because filler was added rather then just letting the two parts melt together. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps02dfa4e8.png I personally hate the "pipe is a pipe" argument its just a lack of information and people trying to justify buying junk. |
|
You may have been mislead by the title but I DO NOT JUSTIFY the lack of quality of this over pipe by saying a pipe is a pipe right? It's meant in a sarcastic way. As I'm almost done installing this piece, I DO NOT RECOMMEND this over pipe to any one. Fitment could be a lot better but it did in fact fit but has pushed the exhaust back a half inch resulting in a very tightly pushed back exhaust. Here's a pic of the length difference vs stock

wow. that's not even close.
|
Pretty bad that they can't get the length right. Fab guy must have had a few too many when he built the jig.
Or they're eyeballing them....lulz |
Final verdict. Do not buy. More headache than it's worth and you'll end up hammering a dent in it to clear the transmission. Header to overpipe took 2 gaskets to seal.... And it's still slightly leaking. Once again, DO NOT BUY!!!!!

That can't be good pushing the exhaust back that far and forcing it together. Putting stress on everything, especially with those welds.
Did you actually go through and install it? Hammering clearance on a new car, I really hope you sold it for scrap or returned it. As long as there have been alternative cheap parts companies around we all know there is rarely success stories. Why bother on a deal when you get that much of a headache from your purchase. |
Thanks for taking the risk and reviewing, though I'd already dropped several bills on the Perrin one (flawless fitment though).

Uhmmm I hammered the 100 dollar piece of crap. Not sure why you said that, being as I didn't actually hammer the "new car" itself. Any who, yeah it's installed and I loosened up my q300 and re tightened it to relieve some stress. I don't plan on having it on my car for more than a week because I just ordered a Motive down pipe just a while ago. "Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose." |

No problem. It was just a hundred bucks and I didn't plan on keeping it, as I want to mate my catted ft86sf header with a quality overpipe. So, now we know that this DC Sports overpipe is junk and there is a install/review thread available to those that are curious. "Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose." |

But now there's an easy to follow, easy to understand thread that will hopefully deter inquisitive forum members from buying a cheap crappy over pipe! "Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose." |
Can lead a horse to water.... or something like that! haha
Same people that will buy it will be the same ones that don't know what a search button is. :P |
Thank you for your sacrifice!

I'd have to say this stuff goes both ways. Pipe is pipe, up to a point. Yes buying more expensive pieces does generally result in higher quality, but not always. Some companies take conspicuous consumption to the extreme and use their brand name to mark things up beyond what is justified by the quality over something less expensive.
For instance, I bought a J2 front pipe for like $110 shipped back when they were the only >2.5" option available. It fit like a glove and is holding up just as good as any other piece I have (Motiv and Perrin). You can't always judge based on price alone. That's why we have guys review things on the forums :). |

This kind of crap makes me wish I had a mandrel bender and CNC mill to make my own exhaust parts. |

I go a tad overboard on projects and would probably want to mass produce once I got something jigged and tested on AP's dyno. I'd LOVE to make full exhaust with cats and resonators to get a deep bassy zero rasp exhaust note like my STI. We've got a full pneumatic lift, plasma cutter, new Multimatic 200, and just about every other tool under the sun. When I priced out the pipe, cats, resonators, and tips on Summit, I might as well just pay for a full Nameless 3". I'd have to buy in serious bulk to make a reasonable profit on exhaust parts. A mandrel bender would make it a cakewalk. The CNC would let me do perfect flanges I wouldn't be embarrassed to sell. |
This is disappointing. i just got my dc overpipe in the mail today. it looks just like yours. im sure i will have the same issues as you. i might dent it with a hammer to clear. how much do u need to dent the pipe?
Im thinking i might have an exhaust shop cut out a half inch from the downpipe side so it wont push everything back. i dont have the money for a good 200 dollar op right now so im stuck with this for a few months. hopefully cutting out a bit and denting it will make it work.. whats funny is i bought this cause i had an exhaust leak with stock op and now i might still have the problem. its already a Frankenstein pipe so cutting it dont bother me. i just hope i can make it work. definately not worth the problems for saving 100 bucks. |

This is a better deal. Over pipe and front pipe for 170$ shipped. It fits right too. I've had it on for 2k miles and 2 track days so far with no issues. I got it because it's cheap and local but most likely upgrading to 3" soon since I have turbo. |
2 late to return. id have to pay restocking fee and shipping

I mean, it's still installed in my car, the leak seems to be sealed but it's a pain in the ass to install it. I put a good sized dent on the top "hump" portion. I drove all day but I'm smelling exhaust fumes in the cabin. I can't wait to uninstall that crap. "Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose." |
Plus it made the tips of my Q300 crooked a bit.. Lol

Yeah it's about 2.5 inches too long and I meant I couldn't hear the leak anymore lol. I can't believe they can sell something like this.

Anyway, if a company won't stand behind their product then no point giving them any more of your money so yeah, you are right in not bothering after that. |
