Re-fueling Timing and Amount

Maybe this is being over cautious, but when do people normally refill at

1. half tank
2. quarter tank

Also, does it do any harm to pump extra when the pump kicks off telling you the tank is fullÉ

:search: :sigh:

eSOLOR 03-15-2014 04:02 AM

I usually fill my tank when I'm below a quarter.

Here's a thread about "topping off".

Check that thread out for topping off, it has some good info.

I refuel everytime I get to half a tank. Except for my first tank, I waited till that one got to "E"

After the little light comes on.

Sarlacc 03-15-2014 09:11 AM

Why, oh why would anyone fill up a half full tank? Unless you're going into barren wilderness with no gas stations, and in that case you may be in the wrong car.

In urban areas with plenty of gas stations I refuel when I'm almost empty, usually 30-60 km after the light comes on.

CruiseZen 03-15-2014 10:32 AM

A quarter tank (as shown on the gage) will allow me to make a round trip to all of my farther common destinations. So I usually fill up when I get a bit under a quarter tank to insure that I won't have to stop for a refill if I'm pressed for time.

Got it, to clear out the crappy fuel from the dealer. I'm going with Chevron 94, what are you fueling with?

This is bad for the fuel pump...

BobRickel 03-15-2014 11:14 AM

I fill it till it shuts off and it always reads full. There is a warning sticker on my FRS gas door that says to never try to put additional gas in after it kicks off the first time.

Captain Insano 03-15-2014 11:25 AM

Whenever I get to half a tank or below I fill up on 93 octane when I have a chance. Not all gas stations around here have 93. So I'm paranoid I will be trapped somewhere when I'm low and only be able to run 91 octane.

Not saying it's right, that's just how I do it.

EAGLE5 03-15-2014 11:27 AM

I have never seen or even heard of a fuel pump failing because of running the tank low. The only downside I know of is that you can pick up sediment into the fuel filter, but again, I have never heard of an actual issue with this.

I'm actually using shitty shell v-power 93. Maybe I should start using chevron 94 lol. I'll have to find it though. I see shell gas stations pretty frequently, more so than chevron. Unless I'm just not noticing the chevrons.

Opinions do vary, but here is what I know from experience.

My standard practice is to not fill up until very near empty. No particular reason, other than I hate stopping for gas.

My last three daily drivers all have had over 250,000 miles on them before I moved to the next DD.

I've never had a fuel pump fail.

i'm told that fuel pumps are now cooled via the fuel moving through them, and are no longer required to be completely submerged in the tank to prevent overheating..

i believe the whole submerged-pump thing is from the early 60-70's era.. if you've got more current info on newer cars about it that contradicts that, i'd love to hear it, because it's something i'd need to correct for immediately..

wulfstan 03-15-2014 01:14 PM

Below a 1/4 is my usual... I don't like any of the cars below 1/4...

When it makes sense.

Burrcold 03-15-2014 01:20 PM

Usually just wait until the light comes on, or just before. Depends how lazy I'm feeling on any given day.

Tromatic 03-15-2014 02:01 PM

Having lived for a while in SoCal, at half-tank I get twitchy. I want to be able to go a ways if SHTF before I need to think about gas.

From my understanding the fuel pump is submerged and if you run your tank below 1/4 you risk burning out your fuel pump, or at least shortening it's life.

Is there anything stated in the manual? Does anyone have a PDF version of the 2014 owners manual. I found the quick guide on scion.com

Only the BRZ that I've found.

I agree and have had a similar experience. I've owned more than a dozen cars since the late 80s and 3 different cars where I accumulated >150,000 miles and I usually don't fill up until the tank is near empty. I have NEVER, in all that time, ever had an issue with the fuel system, fuel pump, fuel filter, etc in any of my cars.

I won't argue that there are reasons for filling up before the tank is empty. But from practical experience, it makes very little difference.

Show me one person who has burned out their FR-S or BRZ pump by running the tank low. The only failure I know of happened to Robispec, who at the time blamed the failure on e85.
